Hi! Rich and I are back in Leon where I recovered from my cold two weeks ago. I like that I know the basic layout of the city and can show him around. We went to the french bakery, the air conditioned internet and to the grocery store that has really nice stuff. Now we are staying at a hostel where our friends from Jiquilillo Beach are (the kids from Boston) because the only girl in the group forgot her Iphone and we said we would meet her at the hotel and deliver it. The hotel is really cute and has a nice kitchen which guests can use so we decided to stay. They also provide pancake breakfast for free and I am writing my blog while I wait for these pancakes to be made. Yesterday ... read more

In the later morning and early afternoon yesterday we were so worried that we had lost the Rancho dog and Rico telling Nate and Stephanie, the owners, that he was sorry that we had lost their boy. Nate (or Nato as he is called in the village) went out in his truck to the area where we last saw him and asked everyone there and no one had seen him. Later Rico and I boarded the 1:30 pm bus to the end of the village, sitting on opposite sides of the bus in case we could see him on his way. We thought that maybe he decided to come back along the road instead of the beach the way we had walked earlier. Once the bus got to the end of the beach everyone got off. ... read more

Wednesday we got up really early and walked from the Rancho to the end of the beach where the Padre Ramos Reserve starts. Rich took his fishing pole but didn't get much interest from the fish. The Rancho dog "Curly" followed us there for the hour walk but then disappeared at the fishing community at the entrance to the preserve. We walked back without him and had some coffee and breakfast. The owner is not too concerned about the dog and if he isn't back by 2 pm we will drive to the point to see if we can find him. He is a big dog and he challenges all other dogs and we hope that nothing bad happened to him. The owners claim he has ADD and forgets what he is doing if he sees ... read more

Rich and I were enjoying our time at the Mariposa. There the weather was the coolest I experienced in most of Nicaragua. The Ecolodge is in the hills to the northeast of the Masaya Volcano surrounded by trees planted by the owner. We had very little rain while we were there and only several hours of Spanish Lessons. Our instructor was having some serious high blood pressure problems and most of my time was spent trying to discuss this in Spanish. He got some work out of his time with Rich while they went over the uses of SER and ESTAR. My conversation instructor was much harder on me and made me work through flashcards for various verbs and difference tenses and different forms that verbs can be changed into (gerunds and past participles). At ... read more

Hi everyone! We have been busy getting situated in La Mariposa Ecolodge and have been taking Spanish lessons. Rich has been studying hard, but I have doing my best to just shoot the breeze with my teachers and so am not really utilizing my time well. We arrived late Wednesday and took classes Thursday and Friday. Today we had a field trip to Laguna de Apoya which is quite warm because of the underground warm springs that come up into the lake. The lake was really clean, but Rich noticed that there was a real absence of waterfowl and birds on the lake. It was a very large group of people who came from La Mariposa and this was a little hard for loners like Rich and I. We did swim for quite a while and ... read more

Hi everyone, Just a short note to let everyone know that Rich arrived as scheduled last night and I met him at the airport. Our driver was a bit late, but we arrived at the EcoLodge at around 9:30 pm and got a nice private room with a bath. Since my last visit in December, then have built an outdoor shower and latrine and Rich has been using the latrine because it is more private and he can watch the monkeys that live out there in cages. We started our Spanish lessons this morning and there is a plan to go to park this afternoon but it is raining now and I am not sure if the plan will change. We have been busy with our activities and have not had time to take any pictures. ... read more

Hi everyone, Today was my last full day in Leon and I am nearly over my cold. I still have a little sore throat on the right side only, but am otherwise feeling good. And that is a great thing because Rich arrives tomorrow night! I will pack up my things and hang out here at the hotel until the last minute then take the bus to Managua and then a cab to the airport. The father of the family I stayed with in December will be picking us up there and taking us to La Mariposa, a language school and Ecolodge. I am looking forward to seeing Gonzolo and hopefully his family again. We had a joke going that he was my Papa in Nicaragua, but his birthday is May 15, 1965 which is only ... read more

Hi again! Leon is a city of old churches. I walk past and take a few pictures but touring these really isn´t my thing. And it seems most people are shopping and not in the churches anyway. Of course it is a Spanish Colonial City and Catholic Churches seem to be the only kind. For history or archeological buffs it would be quite interesting. Few churches are in good repair, but there are a few which are quite beautiful. I do enjoy the parks near the churches where the old men play chess and dominos and there is ice cream and snacks to buy. Within 12 blocks in any direction there are as many churches as well as museums. Of course there are bars and hostels and these are the happening places with loud music, pool ... read more

HI again! Here is where I have been for the last 2 nights and will stay another, I think. It is really cozy (acogedora - a new spanish word for me) and beautiful. It is furnished with wonderful antiques including bureaus and high beds. One needs a stepstool to get up into the bed. The gardens are lovely and since it has been raining so much it is a great place to sit it out and for me to get over my cold. Rosaria is the owner and she is really sweet and accomodating. The others who work here, Roberto and Salvadora, are also lovely. They have about 15 turtles that live in the garden and every day Roberto goes out and buys them chicken which they clean right off the bone. I´m really enjoying my ... read more
