We rode up to Red Lodge, Montana over the mountains into Yellowstone and back over the mountains to Cody. Great ride. Got in late and didn’t have time to write, will write when I get a chance. I did upload the pictures, though: https://plus.google.com/photos/101506993269424417039/albums/5788601807911563905?authkey=CPetuJS0y6TACA... read more

We left Hot Springs just before 8 am and rode to Custer, South Dakota where we stopped for breakfast. Went through Wind Cave National Park again and this time the bison got up close and personnel, they were in the road – we drove about 4 feet away from them, it was amazing A note about tense; I am taking a page out of Jenine’s book and trying to update this journal whenever I get a chance, instead of waiting until the evening. Some entries will probably be in the present tense and others in the past tense, I will attempt to be consistent, but when I am not, I apologize. Speaking of keeping a journal – this netbook I borrowed from Cassidy has been a lifesaver, I use it constantly to book rooms, plan our ... read more

We left the motel a little before 10. The weather was beautiful; the temperature was perfect and there were no clouds or wind. We rode through Sturgis, although there was not really much to look at; its claim to fame is the motorcycle rally held each year the first week of August. Over one million bikers descend on the town for a week long party. It must be an amazing sight, all those people packed into such a small town. Of course we just had to visit the Sturgis Harley dealer, I mean really, how can you go to Sturgis and not visit the Harley dealer? We left Sturgis and rode the 20 or so miles to Deadwood, a beautiful ride over a wide, gently curving road through the Black Hills. We visited the historic center ... read more

Got an early start, 6:45 – 30 minutes before sunrise. The weather was excellent, not too cool, and no wind. It looked like we were going to have a great day. The scenery was gorgeous, and watching the sunrise over the plains was awesome. We took rt.183 to rt. 90 which was a great ride. About 15 minutes after we got onto rt. 90, we ran into wind – lots of it. Unfortunately, the wind was coming across the road which made it very difficult to ride in. We drove about 35 – 40 mph (speed limit 75) most of the time. We decided to bypass the Badlands National Park loop because it was so windy. We Stopped in Wall, South Dakota, which is the western terminus of the Badlands loop, to get a stamp at ... read more

We got a pretty early start; we were on the road by 8:30. We got gas in town and started up the road and got about 1/2 mile when we realized that it was entirely too windy to ride a motorcycle. So we turned around and went to Josies cafe for coffee where we spent about an hour commiserating with the locals. Turns out the big news here is the new ShopKo (like a mini Wal-Mart) just opened and is having their grand opening this coming Thursday. Before this store opened, people in Winner had to travel about 150 miles to get to a Kmart or Wal-Mart. We came back to the motel and will spend the day doing laundry and reading, relaxing, etc.... read more

This blog is going to have to be brief, we want to get an early start so that we will have more time in the evening to relax and unwind We left Omaha later than we usually do, around 10 am. It was a little cool with sunny skies – perfect motorcycle weather. There was virtually no traffic and nary a truck in sight. We rode up Interstate 29 to Sioux City to visit the Lewis & Clark National Historic site to get another stamp. Only 48 more stamps and 24 more States to go. We made our way over to Nebraska again and rode on Route 12 along the Missouri river for most of the afternoon. Truly, this was a ride that most people can only dream about. The temperature was in the high 70’s ... read more

We got an early start from Joliet and were optimistic that we were going to have a good day riding, it was a little cool, but not cold, and not a cloud in the sky. The weather report said that the temperature along out route would be in the mid to high 70’s – perfect riding weather. After we got on the highway we discovered what the weather report didn’t tell us – it was really, really windy – horrible conditions for riding. There weren’t as many trucks as there were near Chicago, but there were enough to be a real nuisance. We tucked in our elbows, ducked our heads and continued on, stopping more frequently than we had on the previous days. As we moved across Iowa, the scenery became more beautiful, which made the ... read more

Today was much like yesterday, 427 miles, not much traffic to start, but lots of trucks in the afternoon as we got closer to Chicago, and when we got really close – brutal traffic. It rained all around us all day long, but we were lucky and didn’t get any rain until we were at dinner in Joliet Illinois, which is where we are spending the night. We are really looking forward to getting to Sturgis, which is where we stop riding on interstates with lots of trucks, and start riding on back roads and stopping to take lots of pictures. If you are following our progress on spotwilla: http://spotwalla.com/tripViewer.php?id=52d150297cb4735c3 you will notice that it looks like we drove a straight line that isn’t on any road. It is because the battery in the device died ... read more

Our trip finally began!!! We left Rick’s house at 7 and drove 15 minutes to Morrisville where we stopped for breakfast. We figured that by leaving Morrisville at 8 we would miss all of the commuter traffic near Fort Washington. We figured wrong. Traffic was stop and go for about three quarters of an hour. It did get a lot better after we got to the Northeast Extension, though. Trucks were a nuisance; they cause a lot of problems because of the turbulence they create. Other than the trucks, the ride was pretty smooth. We traveled 422 miles to Austintown Ohio where we decided to call it a day. We all think that the day went very well, we went much further than we thought we would be able to on the first day. We did ... read more
