We wake up late and hungry after the stress of yesterday's travel. We assume that there’ll be a supermarket nearby, but the Google machine seems to suggest otherwise. It tells us that there are some "Italian grocers" on the island, but we suspect that these probably aren't going to sell Corn Flakes. The nearest supermarket seems to be a couple of kilometres away, and it‘s off the island. I set off. It’s been raining, and it soon starts again, so I take shelter under a balcony. I‘m quickly approached by an African street vendor who wants to sell me an umbrella, and a few minutes later by another, and then another, all trying to sell me rain protection. They seem to be very good at knowing what you need, and having a large supply of it ... read more

I head down for my last breakfast here in Lipari. The staff have stuck the handle back on the hotel's front door so it looks much better now. I notice a copy of "The Godfather" on the bookshelf in reception and wonder what the significance of this might be. The hotel dog doesn't seem to remember me from yesterday and tries to bite my arm off yet again. That aside we've really enjoyed our time here and we're very sad to be leaving. We catch the ferry across to Milazzo on Sicily's north-east tip where we've arranged to hire a car. We're told that it's our lucky day, and that we've been upgraded. In our experience this usually means a bigger vehicle, but as we wander up and down the street outside we can't seem to ... read more

We sleep in and spend the morning lazing around the pool. It's a bit hazier today and more humid. We've read on TripAdvisor that the number one thing to do in Lipari is visit the Chiesa Vecchia church in Quattropani on the other side of the island. We trudge down to the port again. I head to the ferry office to buy our tickets for the ferry to Milazzo in Sicily for when we leave tomorrow, while Issy goes to look for bus tickets to Quattropani. I don't know too much about the ferry service, and as I wait nervously in the queue I begin to think that maybe I should have looked into it a bit more carefully before we left home. I hope there is a ferry tomorrow. TripAdvisor said that the bus services ... read more

We sleep in and miss breakfast, which might be a good thing. At least now I don't need to worry about trying to sneak things out of the breakfast room for Issy. I'm hungry, and then I remember that I only had a packet of biscuits for lunch in Panarea yesterday because the queue for the sandwiches was too long. I then only ate two of the four energy bars that I bought to have for dinner on the rim of the crater at Stromboli, because I was too mesmerised looking at the view. Issy says that because we didn't do anything yesterday, today we need to go for a long walk. I'm not entirely sure I agree that I didn't do anything yesterday, or that I need to do more walking, but I'm hungry so ... read more

Issy's arm's still very sore, so she decides to pass on today's tour to climb Stromboli. I wait anxiously for her to give me this morning's breakfast order. I've been having nightmares about trying to smuggle a bowl of cereal, a plate of bacon and eggs and four pieces of toast out of the breakfast room without anyone noticing, and these usually end with me being carted off by the police. Thankfully this morning's order is only for a couple of croissants. Despite its apparent simplicity I hear someone walking behind me as I leave, and panic. Fortunately it's just another guest. First stop is the neighbouring island of Panarea, where we stop offshore for a quick swim before heading into the port. We pass a giant cabin cruiser with a yellow water slide running from ... read more

There‘s no water coming out of the taps in our room, so I trek down to reception to have breakfast and to tell the receptionist about the water. I hope she doesn't try to bite my arm off. Fortunately it’s a different receptionist and this one even seems moderately friendly. She‘s very apologetic and tells me that the water will be back on again shortly. Issy’s asked me to bring her back a whole fruit. She doesn't specifically say that she wants a watermelon but I don't ask for clarification just in case. This morning we‘ve decided to head over to the neighbouring island of Vulcano to scale its 500 metre high mountain peak. It seems that this is also an active volcano, which I suspect we probably should have been able to work out from ... read more

I head down to breakfast alone. Issy's asked me to bring her back a croissant. There's a large sign on the buffet saying that all food is to be eaten in the restaurant, and there's to be no takeaway. I wonder if I've got the courage to smuggle a croissant back to the room, and what they might do to me if I get caught. I casually walk over to the croissant table, and sneak one into a serviette. I'm pretty sure that no one saw me. I hope that Issy's grateful for the enormous risk that I've just taken. The booking site for the hotel said that it had a shuttle transfer service to take guests to and from the town, so I ask the receptionist when this leaves. She isn't very friendly, and she ... read more

Today we travel to Lipari, which is one of the Aeolian Islands off the north coast of Sicily. As we pack I again notice that there's a tin on the desk in our room; when we arrived here Issy told me that it was full of tobacco. I ask her if she wants to take it with her. I'm not sure why; she doesn't smoke. I open it, and find two lollies in the bottom. It seems that she told me it was full of tobacco so that I wouldn't open it and find her secret stash, which she's now nearly finished eating. I'm clearly blindly trusting of her. She says that she can't believe that she made me believe that the hotel had given us a tin of tobacco, which now that I think about ... read more

I had a big day yesterday climbing volcanoes, well one volcano anyway, so we sleep in and decide on a relaxing day. We head into a shopping area near the hotel and Issy spies a Japanese restaurant. I think this might be the first one she's seen since we left home. The drool starts to appear at the corners of her mouth. It seems that it's closed now. I manage to stop her from breaking down the door, but I'm fairly sure we'll be back here later, and there might be violence if it's not open then. It seems someone before us may have had similar thoughts. A large area outside the restaurant is wrapped in police tape, and multiple members of the constabulary are in attendance. We briefly consider asking one of them what's happened ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Mount Vesuvius August 13th 2017

Today is an important day - we've booked a tour to climb Mount Vesuvius, which is the first of the three volcanoes we plan to scale on this trip. I've been keeping a close eye on the mountain from our balcony since we arrived. I haven't seen any smoke or noticed any earthquakes, so hopefully it should be safe to climb today. Issy's still feeling the after effects of her seasickness tablets so she tells me that she won't be joining me, and will instead spend the day by the pool. I hope that she hasn't heard something about an impending eruption that she's not telling me about. Our guide introduces herself as Rafaela. She tells us that people from the south of Italy have a reputation for being lazy, and that this applies to every ... read more
