South America » Colombia » Santa Marta » Taganga November 5th 2009

So after a long and gruelling journey over the border from Venezuela which included paying numurous officials off and queing for long periods in the raging heat we finally arrived in Taganga. Taganga is a little fishing village around 5 Km outside the town of Santa Marta. It is very popular for diving and just chilling out on the Carribean. We were particularly excited as it was our first trip to the carribean on our travels. On arrival at Taganga we sought out somewhere to stay. We went with a palce called Casa Blanca which is literally on the waters edge. It was beatuiful with a hammock outside our room overlooking the bay but the price matched the beauty. With the price so high the following day we set out for somewhere else to stay and ... read more

South America » Venezuela » Andean » Mérida October 28th 2009

So I have finally summited my first mountain of some sort of altitude. he Mountain is called Pan De Azucar and the altitude at the summit is 4680 meters. It is 27 miles north of Merida in the Andes. We set off from the agency in Merida at 8am on Monday morning all set with our tent, sleeping bags, lots of food, gloves, a lots of warm clothes. The climb on the first was not too difficult, the only issue was our bags on our back, although it was slighty lighter than it usually is was still giving us a challenge. Poor Anne had never had to trek with such a large bag before so was quite a test for her. We arrived at our base camp at arond 3pm in the afternoon tired but feeling ... read more

South America » Venezuela » Llanos » Apure October 25th 2009

SO we have just finished a four day trek in Los Llanos. Los Llanos is a flatland area that is buzzing with wildlife. We were a bit hesitant at first to book the tour as a result of our last tour in the Amazon which we didn't see very much even though we were promised we´d see crocs etc. The first day of our tour was very relaxed. We got picked up at the bus station in Barinos and met the rest of our group for the four days. Unfortunately our group was not as good as at Angel Falls. There was 2 couples from Germany who didn´t seem to know how to smile!! We had a Spanish guy and also a Russian frmo Moscow who English was not great so he stayed quiet most of ... read more

South America » Venezuela » Guayana » Canaima National Park October 19th 2009

We left Ciudad Bolivar three days ago for our 1 and a half hour flight to Canaima National Park. Our plane turned out to be a six seater airplane which was awesome. It reminded me of the little mini that my dad used to drive us to school in. The inside felt like it was around 20 years old with huge circular dials for the speed and altitude. It took off after around 50 meters on the runway, was like we were only going around 50 miles an hour. On arrival we were greeted by our tour guide "fready" who is also indiginous to the area. Our first day was spent going to the local waterfalls and swimming every 10 minutes in the ice cold river. We got to walk underneath two of the waterfalls which ... read more

South America » Venezuela » Guayana » Santa Elena de Uairen October 14th 2009

I am highly starting to doubt I will ever find an internet quick enough to load my photo´s up however I shall keep attempting, one of these days I might get one or two photo´s up ;) So we got our bus yesterday from Manaus overnight to Bo Vista in north Brasil. When we were on the bus I realised that I no longer had the form I was given at the airport on arrival. This form is to state how long you can stay in the country and was stamped by immigration. I read in my Lonely Plant book that if you reachthe border without it they deny exit and you have to travel back to a Banco do Brasil and pay a fine of US$75. I was so annoyed when I realised but all ... read more

South America » Brazil » Amazonas » Manaus October 13th 2009

So our boat to Manaus was a completely different experience to the first time around but again we had to sleep three nights on the boat. Although the first night we were docked and had the boat to ourselves. The captain agreed that we could sleep overnight which saved us finding accomodation for the night. When we woke up after our first night we thought the boat would be crammed with hammocks like previously but to our astonishment only 40 or 50 hammocks went up which left us with plenty of room to swing our hammocks to our hearts content ;) We were due to leave at 1pm but didn´t end up leaving until 4pm which meant we would have a late arrival in Manaus. Our neighbours seemed very nice through our sign language we spoke, ... read more

South America » Brazil » Pará » Santarém October 8th 2009

When I said before that we had found a good position on the boat to Santerem I was actually incorrect. We arrived to the ship around 2 hours before it was due to leave port. We were greeted by the sight of around 250 hammocks with ours smack bang in the middle. I had read in the book that they get very busy but I didn´t realise they would have a hammock in every concievable spot so that there is no room to walk around. Anne had a women who didn´t look well and was about 90 years old. Basically you are sleeping on top of each other. Once the boat had left port we decided to walk around and found two English speaking people. They were both from Lithuania and live in Dublin, Valiukas and ... read more

South America » Brazil » Pará » Belém September 30th 2009

The last couple of days have been busy between buying hammocks and looking at boats for our trip as well as trying to fit in the cultural stuff in Belem. On the first night we went around the markets to find some dinner, we found a lovely little stand kind of thing where we had steak, rice noodles all four around 3euro, not bad eh?!! We tried to find a bar afterwards to have a few drinks but everything seemed to be closed after dark so we had to have a quite night in the hostel. The next morning Phillipe was´s mother runs our hotel made anne and myself go to his apartment to help him with his paintings, he does a lot of canvass paintings and seems to sell most of them. He needed help ... read more

South America » Brazil » Pará » Belém September 28th 2009

After spending another night in Sau Luis we made our way back to the bus station for an over night bus and moved further north. OUrlast day in Sau Luis was nice if rather a little boring, I think we were the only Gringo´s in the city but that wasn´t a problem. The weather was so hot and humid that we could barely walk for longer than an hour before having to head back for the room in our Pousada. The pousada itself wasn´t in the best nick!! The floors felt like they were about to cave in and in the kitchen there was ant coloneys on the wall....a nice sight when you have your first meal of the day. We also had a lizzard living somewhere in our bed but he seemed harmless! For our ... read more
