South America » Argentina » Misiones » Puerto Iguazú February 1st 2010

The day after we visited Iguazu Falls we decided to take a lazy day in which I also wrote my last blog. We lazed by the pool all day and soaked up the sun. Unfortunately I did not prepare myself well enough for this and proceeded to get badly sunburnt. That day as usual it did not feel too bad but the following day unfortunately it popped up nice and red!!! The following morning we packed up the tent and got a lift to the bus station. We then made our way safely and quickly across the border to Argentina (Puerto Iguazu). We knew we were gong to the Argentine side of the falls this day so were in quite a rush!! When we jumped off the bus we were in two minds on whether or ... read more

Beofer I write this blog I should let everyone know I have put up photos for everywhere I have been since northern Peru so happy reading :) Instead of staying in the seedy Cuidad del Este in Paraguay we pushed on for an extra day in Brazil which is currently being spent lazing by the pool in between thunder storms!! We arrived over the border and had met a Brazilian guy Guilherme from Rio who is also backpacking. The three of us ventured over the border where Anne and I received more stamps on the pass port. Guilherme had done some research and found a nice hostel to stay in which is only three month old and we could set up camp in the garden. I felt like was starting to get the dreaded ´Man Flu'which ... read more

South America » Paraguay » Asunciòn January 17th 2010

Our journey to Acunsion, the capital of Paraguay was not quite as easy as we had planned. Origonally we had thought that we had a night bus to a town called resistancia followed by a short 6 hour bus to the border where we could calmly cross over to Paraguay. This was all true until we stepped off the bus at the border and as we waited for our bags our bus just drove off with both our mouths open!! At first we just thought the bus was parking until we realised it was heading back down the highway. Once we got to grips at what had happened we had to rush to get a taxi to follow the bus back to a bus terminal. We agreed a fixed rate with the taxi driver so he ... read more

South America » Argentina » Salta » Salta January 17th 2010

Arrival in Argentina was not without a long 24 hours of travelling from SUcre in Bolivia but it seemed worth it when we saw beautiful blue skies and and locals wearing shorts and vests again. The Altimeter on my watch went under 1000 meters for the first time in over 2 and a half months which was interesting, I was starting to get used to the climate at high altitude. When our bus finally stopped the clouds opened up and began to pour rain to our surprise. We were camping unfortunately so we jumpde in a taxi and made our way to the camping site. It was creeping up to 7.30pm and the daylight was beginning to seep away so we knew we had to be quick. We arrived in a huge downpour but luckily when ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Chuquisaca Department » Sucre January 9th 2010

Sucre has been slightly more lo key as we have been quite tired and thought we´d have a relaxing few day s in a city. Sucre is officially the capital in Bolivia apart from the fact that it comes second in every way to La Paz. We arrived quite late in the day and decided on a quick hostel. We found one close to the centre and went out for dinner in city. One of the things we had planned to do here was horse riding as we heard it was good around the city. Instead the next day we ended up booking a day of Rock CLimb in the mountains overlooking the city. I thought if I want to keep climbing mountains etc I should really have a basic grip of rock climbing. It really ... read more

Once in Uyuni the four of us settled into a nice little hostel, The name of which I cannot remember, and firstly set out for some food. We found a nice pizzeria and and a beer or two and settled in for the night. The following day would be spent finding an agency for the day after. We had heard that an agency can make or break a trip to Salar de Uyuni (Salt Flats of Uyuni) so we made sure we would find a decent one. I think we must have gone through nearly every agency before we made our decision. We found a nice lady called Andrea in her agency who offered a great trip, lots of food, there would be no more than 6 people on the trip and we would definately be ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Oruro Department » Oruro January 7th 2010

So after our trip up Huanya Potosi it was time for a New Year celebration. We jumped on a bus early new years eve and were bound for Uyuni but decided to break the trip up and stay in Oruro for New years as we heard we could get a train to Uyuni. We arrived at lunch time in Oruro and found a nice little hostel opposite the train station to stay for 2 euro a night. Once settled in we headed over to the train station to buy our tickets for new years day but unfortunately the station was closed till 11 the next day. Insterad we wandered around the town which turned out to be quite a ghost town. The four of us decided to buy some wine and head out for dinner which ... read more

SO it was time to begin my next climb. UNfortunately we knew that weather conditions were against us but we were still determined to get to the top of Huayna Potosi. For ROb this would be his first high mountain and for me my second. Although this time I felt a lot stronger than when I climbed Cotopaxi. Potosi is only 200meters higher than Cotopaxi and is undertaken over 3 days which is a lot more time. We were picked up from our hostel at8am and had the luxery of of a 2hour taxi t othe base camp at 4700 meters at the base of Potosi. Once we arrived we met our guide Miguel who is 43years old and really looking forward to the climb. We also met a group of climbers who were on their ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz January 1st 2010

SO we finally arrived in Bolivia after a few fun weeks in Peru. We are still travelling with the two other couples Rob,Jennie, Sam and Fiona. We arrived in La Paz just in time for Christmas. on first impression La Paz seems very crazy but fun at the same time, the city just seems to be riddled with markets on every corner. We had booked into The Adventure Brew Hostel for 3nights to enjoy the xmas break. This was our time to enjoy ouselves and have a few drinks which we surely did. Every night we made a party for ourselves on the roof top terrace overlooking La Paz. The day itself was nice as everyone got to call home and then we enjoyed the rest of the night with another party on the roof. Once ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Colca Canyon December 21st 2009

So after a well deserved rest myself and Anne aalong with the two other couples all decided to head to Arequipa to make our way to Canyone de Colca which is in fact the second deepest canyon in the world and not the deepest which happens to be only down the road but doesnt seem to be accesible. We had a night bus to Arequipa and arrived at 4.30am where we waited for a connecting bus to a small town called Chivay a couple of hours away which is located 3600meters p in the mountains. We arrived around9am and found anice little hostel on the outskirts of the town. Once showered we had a look around the city and we all went for a nice bath in the hot springs. There is even an Irish Bar ... read more
