D for Danger Once again a fabulous blog! Always blame a bad lunch, ha, ha. We always have time for one more massage. Maybe some day we will get you under water blowing bubbles.
Wish I was there! I drove round Mt Agung today and it was as dead as a doornail! Right, game on! I'm going to try and capture some good shots of the wonderful Indonesian people too. I need some of that Dancing Dave magic though ;)
Bella is remembered. I was sorry to hear about the loss of Bella, your stories and memories of how much a member of your family Bella was is fabulous. The ending whenever it comes is always sad.
It is good those memories will make you smile now and always.

so sorry ;-( Beautiful goodbye to your dear friend and practically family member. We understand perfectly how important animals are in our lives as we were heartbroken to leave our beautiful Spaniel Athos behind with our parents when going for this trip....Bella had a great life it seems. Take care.

So sorry for your loss We have also been cat people all our lives, although we currently also have a dog. Our last one to pass away was Priscilla, or Prissy. We adopted her in 1984 in Brussels. She moved to Virginia with us in 1995, but she died at the age of 21 just before we moved to Colorado to retire. We cried. Thanks for sharing your stories.
We look forward to your blogs from Java. The last time I was there was 1959. Maybe your blogs will inspire me to return...although I would probably go to Bali...but not where tourists are if such a place exists.
Extremely heartfelt.
Until about a year ago, I wouldn't have even read this, but ever since we've taken in a couple of strays, I've grown to love cats. Our two cuddle up like yours and when one went missing for a couple of day...it was unbearable. Very sad entry with some emotive pictures.
What a fitting epitaph to a dear and beloved feline companion. My mother and father divorced when I was 12 years old and not long after that my mother evolved into what I could only term as a 'nutty old cat woman' as she began to collect every waif and stray in the neighbourhood and put all of the love and affection she had into their care. Eventually, I began to see and appreciate the love and joy that these beautiful creatures could impart and over the years we lost many of our own feline friends who had become an important part of our family, so I do indeed understand your pain and deep sense of loss. All we can do is care for them, love them and hope that they understand how much we adore them. I do hope that you will both gain some peace and consolation in the fact that your beautiful cat passed away next to the two people who loved her more than anything else in the world. I couldn't imagine that your dear Bella would have wanted it any other way.
Dave our hearts are full of love for you and Denise We lost our dog, Miss Lillie after 14 1/2 years in June. A day does not go by where we mourn her absence. She traveled many places with us and was a large part of our life. We understand your pain. Please know our good thoughts are with you and I appreciate you sharing the story. These wonderful animals help you to be a better person as they teach us unconditional love and are always waiting for us, happy and smiling when we return from an adventure.
THANKS ANDREA Yep...magic photo...magic locale...only gives a taste of how amazing Our Tuareg Wedding was...one of the best things I have done in my life...and it actually happened..!

eyes are the window of the soul... with those looks he could grace any fashion magazine's front cover & leave the rest for dead!
i love the mostly direct gazes of the African people - they seem to be devoid of selfconsciousness , unaffected so refereshing!
Beautifully narrated story :) Dave, your story about the beggar woman brought tears to my eyes. This is one of the biggest problems in the world today, a total lack of respect for others. Many of us travel the world, treating those we meet as our equal or even elevating their status above ours when we are made privy to and gain an understanding of what they have to endure every day just to survive. Then comes ugly tourist woman who, in a moment of idiocy, destroys everything that people like us travellers have tried so hard to do in an attempt to build bridges between people of different colours, creeds and cultures. All I can say is that I admire your level headed attitude and sensitive approach to the situation, if it had of been me, several expletives would have flown. I pray every day for just a little more love, respect and tolerance in this world. Is it really too much to ask for? Maybe it is for ugly tourist woman!
THANK YOU NICK Your empathy for others is a wonderful trait...I had to tell the stories of the ugly tourists...yet difficult to find a blog to tell them without being a downer...both ugly tourists were equal in my book...but the photos & that I have found rhythm after all these years made it worthwhile. Thanks again for taking the time to comment...cheers the heart.
Daredevil Dancer Ah, Dave, I love your courage--choosing the prettiest one to dance with, getting up in front of everyone to dance even when you think you don't have the rhythm, capturing the essence of people on film (I can't even do that with friends), and speaking the truth to the unconscious. I'm sure Dancing Dave stories will long be told in Lalibela.
Who's the Ugliest of them all? Oh Dave, your pictures mesmorize me as always, such a storyteller, and haven't we all encountered (but few of us will go toe to toe with) the "ugly tourist'. I'm glad you got away with balls in tact.
THANK YOU ANDREA Thank you for taking the time to comment...on both the story & the pics...stories that had to be told...pics I had kept for this blog...add to the portraits in my other Ethiopia blogs...Ethiopia is portrait paradise.
Keep safe...looking forward to your next destination.
My wife Denise & I like to travel "on paths less travelled" that capture our imagination, inspire my photography & where we mix with locals & remain safe.
