Seize the Moment It is great to see this awesome picture of you. You take such incredible portraits and photos of other people, so it's nice to see you so in the moment in this picture.
Just nine metres.....??? Sod group dynamics....I'd of been up there like a rat up a drainpipe, but knowing my luck I would have probably been struck down with AMS, 30cm from the top. The main thing is, you did it in the end :) Actually, I still have a few regrets about my time in Nepal.... then again, if I went back and did something about, I would probably only end up getting nicked ;)
THANKS NICK...YEP...JUST 9 METRES You go all that way...its nearly close enough to touch...so so glad I went back...makes up for so many instances whereby I cannot rectify my regret...could not have worked out better.
Dancing Peacemaker Great words and photos of an amazing adventure--relieving your heart of regret, pushing those lungs and legs, incredible snowy vistas and an exotic setting! I'm not at all surprised that you turned into a facilitator on that first journey--that's what you do with your encouragement and support on travelblog! Inspirational watching you dance with grace through the rough spots. Climb every mountain....
One good yarn Hello - I'm only just catching up on my blog reading, so am a bit late sorry.... One lucky yuan and one great yarn! Loved this story, although I imagine panic stations at the time. All's well that ends well I guess....
Great Stuff Dave..... One thing that few people know about me, is that ever since I left Israel back in 1989, Islam, Sharia and the doctrines that enshroud them are subjects that I have studied immensely and probably have a greater understanding of than most do. I can unequivocally state that nowhere in the Koran or Haditha does it command a woman to cover her face completely, even if some highly ambiguous verses are used to support this. Yes, according to the Koran a woman should dress modestly (An-Nur, 24:31) and I would indeed agree that women do look beautiful when adorning themselves with a headscarf or hijab. However, it is clear that many see both the niqab and the burka as objects of oppression, even if some women claim it is their choice to wear it. In Hadith Abu Harwood, the Prophet Muhammad states that only the face and the hands should remain uncovered after a woman reaches the age of menstruation. The Arabic word 'khimar' is used in Islamic scripture to describe the head covering as proscribed by law. The khimar is a head cloth that covers the hair, sides of the head, neck and breasts. Nowhere is covering the face in its entirety mentioned anywhere. These full face garments that are causing such a bone of contention are nothing more than items of subjugation which have been forced upon women, not by Allah, but by men and the rule of man.
Haa haa haa.... In my humble opinion, the vote is still out on which Asian country tends to make the best job of screwing up our perfectly adequate, English language, but these are some of the best I've seen. Mind you, I still haven't fully recovered from being constantly bombarded by Indian references to the all encompassing word 'cum'!!!
Dave, Dave, Dave..... ...didn't your dear ol' mumsie ever tell you about going off with strange girls? ..... Yes, well mine did too, but I would have probably done the same thing as you, now that the middle age rot has well and truly started to set in ;) The Chinese send a lot of their crap our way, what with plastic candy, plastic fish, synthetic eggs and fruit and veg soaked in poisonous chemicals.... I'll stick to pizza and hamburgers thanks :)
Great blog Dave....and he's getting closer too :D Well, I can see that you are gradually working your way into this part of the world, even if it does involve you getting picked up by the local constabulary! Hopefully you will end up on the shores of 'Nam before long. Looking at it, I think being left with 1 yuan is better than being left with 1 dong.....depending totally on your perspective that is....
Like you, when I see a 'No Photos' sign, I become completely immoral and start snapping away, I think it's the challenge of being caught that drives me, much like when I used to pinch my mum's gin and use it to power our sit on lawnmower. She used to keep the jerry can hidden away somewhere....I never did get that damned smell out of my clothes....
different scene in winter I have been in Summer palace twice, one in early summer-June. one in Winter-Feb. But never seen so many snow there, feel different from the photo with snow... That is a rare chance to have the kind of scene.
Left & lonesome... This is what happens when you don't take your wife with you!
Oh! this is my mantra when travelling with you...
"don't let david get into trouble
don't let david get into trouble
don't let david get into trouble"

LAILA "smoking dog....do i dare ask...did it have barking cough?"...Don't know...it was too busy telling people's fortunes...so I guess...it was a "medium smoking dog"!
Harrowing experience! Great edge of my seat thriller, Dave--glad you made it back to tell the tale. As you say, it's making it through trials like this that teach us to trust. Once, when I was young, I had all my money stolen and had to hitchhike eight days with no money through Guatemala in the midst of cholera in the water and military patrols at sundown to get money in the capital. Now, I've traveling confidence galore and trust that I'll sail through or have a juicy story. It's in the attitude--and you've got a great one!
WOW BRAVE TARA "Now, I've traveling confidence galore and trust that I'll sail through or have a juicy story"...I'm with you there Tara...never a dull moment!
Man I sure know that feeling First OS holiday back in 2000 and we got caught between Syria and Turkey without a Turkish Visa, no way of getting back to Syria and no usable money, (travel rule number 3, always carry US currency). We had a good hour of freaking out before a local got us out of the fix, but boy that one hour took a year out of my life. Reading your blog had me sweaty palmed remembering how things can go wrong so quickly and how panic sets in just as fast. As time goes by these stories are what travelling is all about, getting yourself out of your comfort zone.
As always a great blog.

SHELLEY & SCOTT Delighted you read my blog. I was concerned it may be too long...but if prepared to put in the time...I can take you on the ride. Was quite a pivotal event in my travel experiences...helped my belief I can do anything I put my mind to.
Argentina again Hope you don't get arrested, but I hope you have amazing adventures. I'm back in Argentina where I have a cheap hostel. I keep hoping I'll finally write a blog--wish me luck!
My wife Denise & I like to travel "on paths less travelled" that capture our imagination, inspire my photography & where we mix with locals & remain safe.
