Fortunately it cooled off into the upper 70's and we were able to get a few hours of sleep. On the road the next day proved to be much cooler, we began our long drive on I-40 with todays overnight stop in Holbrook, AZ. The drive was low on interest and excitement although Needles, CA was 95 at 11:30 AM. Sometime during the drive or at our campsite in Holbrook Emily's trick knee tricked out and she was unable to trick it back in. Normally it would last a few moments, but today it never slipped back to normal. She was in serious pain and it showed on the drive to Santa Fe, especially climbing in and out of the truck. BTW- her MO is very much macho - I am tough and I don't need ... read more

The beginning of the second day (actually the first on the Dennis plan) began about 8:30 with a ice and food (OK coffee) stop and we were on the road. I-5 was as exciting as ever with feedlots providing aromatic stimulation. The day heated up quickly and by the time we got to Bakersfield, it was in the low hundreds. The rest of the trip was uneventful except for a stop at Murray Ranch produce facility. I don't agree with some of their caged attractions, but their farming method was A-list organic and it was reflected in their produce. Emily being an organic, sustainable gardener applauded their methods There is not much you can say about Barstow, but when it is 108, however an image is worth a sentence or two. Imagine a snake cooling off ... read more

Well I am writing this first entry on the first morning of our Santa Fe trip and will title it “The Night without Dark ”, but more about that later. Yes first thing first and the first thing to discuss is why we are camped at San Luis Creek Recreation Area in the first place. I can say it was not planned or even considered because we, Emily and myself, left the evening of the day before the trip was to begin and of course there is a story worth telling involved. So let me begin on Monday morning - 8/23. I arrived at Harmony Hill Farm (Emily's farm) about 11 AM to begin the process of loading the trailer, checking out the batteries (had been a problem area from the shakedown camp outings), hooking up ... read more

This trip to Santa Fe, NM started while reading the latest Santa Fe Opera E-mail in December 09. I realized it had been almost 5 years since the last visit and I felt like I was missing the most enjoyable part of my musical world. Now going was not a problem, who could I go with was, as I knew very few people who would be willing to go with me across the street much less 1500 miles. KC was a possibility, but I would have to leave him in a kennel during the operas - vote no on KC. I had recently met a woman named Emily Beals who was introduced by our mutual hair-cutter person. Emily loved all kinds of music including opera and had a venturing spirit. After several discussions, she thought the ... read more
