January 8, 2012 by Craig I will never come back to the South Island of NZ again.......because we have just enjoyed two weeks of it in absolute sunny splendor, and I seriously doubt that luck would favour that again. While the South island basked in sunshine, the North was miserable and rainy the whole time that we were here. We did not go to the North island, thankfully, but apparently the place is drenched and most places had to cancel NYE events (hopefully will be sunny for you in Feb-March, Thomas, which is the best time to travel in North island). The last part of the trip involved travel from Nelson in the North around to Kaikoura back on the East coast and so down to Christchurch - where we started. While in Nelson, we drove ... read more

January 6, 2012 by Craig Hello to all and happy new year ! Wow, 2012 already. We are currently in the charming city of Nelson, in the North of the NZ South Island. Nelson is known for its sunny climate, attractive wooden houses and as the jumping off point for nearby Abel Tasman National Park. We arrived in Nelson having driven up the length of the West coast, a ruggedly beautiful part of NZ where temperate rainforest meets the beach meets glaciers - like on other place in NZ. We finally encountered some rain which put us off seeing Fox Glacier that arvo, but the next day was good and we did the walk to Franz Josef Glacier instead : a massive river of ice extending down the valley and flanked by lush forest. However, you ... read more

january 2, 2012 by Craig Hello, or Kia Ora, from NZ. We have been here now for 11days and have had 11 straight days of sunshine. Must be some sort of record for the South Island of NZ? ! From Milford Sound we traveled up to Queenstown, where we stayed for a few days, including NYE. The three of us became smitten with the place, perhaps due to its innate beauty, the glorious weather and the buzzy atmosphere. Queenstown is the adventure capital of NZ - home of bungee jumping, etc. Whatever you want to do, you can do it here. We did not partake in any of the adrenal-surging stuff, but instead took the gondola up the mountain for awesome views back over the city, Lake Wakatipu on which it sits, and the huge surrounding ... read more

December 30, 2011 by Craig Hello to our family and friends in Australia. I am with Mum and Dad, who have eschewed the hassle of Xmas in Sydney to join me on a 2 week trip around the South Island of NZ. The first thing to say is that it has been unusually warm and sunny here - everyday , in fact, since we arrived on Christmas Eve (even Milford Sound, which is normally brooding, cloudy and wet). We arrived in Christchurch the day after the recent double earthquake on Dec 23. But all was fine for us (I did feel two small aftershocks during the night, but that was all). The rubble and destruction of the Feb quake is still really evident. We wandered around the roped off "Red Zone" , peering into pubs and ... read more

Episode 7 : CapeTown and Homeward Bound. (4.10.11) by Craig Howzit? We are currently in the beautiful city of Cape Town, or the "Mother City" as it is known here. The city sits on the water, with the awesome Table Mountain as its backdrop. Despite the dreary weather forecast, the days proved sunny and blue, so we spent the time doing touristy things. Yesterday, we caught the rotating cablecar up to the top of Table Mountain (along with a zillion others). It was well worth the wait. The 360 degree views of the city, mountain spine and along the coastline were phenomenal (probably the best mountain top/ building top vista I have ever seen). Back in town, we went to the Pan African Market, a small hole in the wall that led into passageways and rooms ... read more

Episode 6 (1.10.11) - by Craig. Whale, sharks and the Western Cape. Hello to everyone back home. We are currently in the Cape Town region, in the South Western corner of South Africa. The city is beautiful - we saw it in sunshine as we arrived but the next few days will apparently be cloudy. Well, prior to arriving in Cape Town, we picked up a hire car and drove two hours South East, to the town of Gansbaai (pronounced Huns-by ), the self professed "great white shark capital of the world". Nowhere else in the world are Great White Sharks so accessible (15 mins from shore, where they feed on a resident seal population.) They are a magnificent animal and the world's largest and most feared predatory shark. I had booked a white shark cage ... read more

Episode 5 (27.9.11) Swaziland and on to Durban Hello to all our friends, family and colleagues back home. Hope the weather is warming up by now ?? After Kruger, we drove South, through the kingdom of Swaziland. This is a separate country and required passports, immigration, etc. It was all straightforward, except that Bryan had to fill in a long and tedious form because he was carrying a small laptop. Why ? We never found out.The Swazi immigration building was a glorified shed, with many people milling about semmingly doing nothing. Anyway, Swaziland was interesting - a very poor country with lots of villages with those round beehive type huts, and livestock strolling all over the roads. We stayed in a nice hotel in the village of Siteki, where the waiter was no sure of the ... read more

Then the lion pride started to defend their kill from jackals and vultures,. A heard of elephants came down and drank, sensed the lions then took off. The jackals and lions played cat and mouse. Then, over the horizon, a huge heard of buffalo appeared. They amassed at the riverbank to drink, either not knowing or not caring about the lions resting in the ... read more

Episode 3 (15.9.11) by Craig Hello to everyone back home. We have spent the past five days in Kruger National Park and the adjoining Elephant Plains lodge. It has been the most fantastic exeperience of my life ! We had a hire car in Kruger and drove around, seeing elephants, giraffes, hippos, all sorts of antelope and colourful birds. We stayed in " restcamps" - large fenced compounds that have all the mod cons: caferteria, shops, bar, swimming pools, huts and bungalow accommodation. You can drive around during the day but must be back at camp by 6pm -sharp - when they close the camp gate. A few days ago, we were driving late in the day and came upon a cheetah resting beside a tree. Fantastic - only 200 of them in the park and ... read more
