Episode 2 (11.9.11) Blogged by Craig. Hello everyone. We are safe and well and having an excellent time here in South Africa. We spent the past 3 days in Johannesburg - a city with a fearsome reputation but one in which we had a great time. Ross found a brochure about a stage show called Africa Omuja. We booked and went along. It was brilliant - with singing and dancing ranging from tribal - complete with drums, spears and shields, as well as vibrant gospel that made your hair stand on end. The singing and dancing, and performances were excellent. The next day, we did a private tour of Soweto (which stands for SOuth WEstern TOwnships.) It is hard not to view such a tour as cultural vouyerism - white tourists gawking at poor black communities. ... read more

Episode 1 (8.9.2011) We made it - Africa, the dark continent. We arrived safely in Johannesburg, South Africa, yesterday. The Qantas flight over was great for two reasons. 1. Plane only half full and the three of us each got a row of seats to ourselves. 2. I mistakenly thought that we would fly West, over Australia, over Perth and across the Indian Ocean. No - we went south from Sydney , over Gippsland, over Tassie and across the Southern Ocean. This meant that we skirted Antarctica, and we saw icebergs ! Fantastic. We arrived at Johannesburg and had a woman waiting to pick us up and deliver us to our accommodation in leafy Melville in the northern suburbs. We drove past some ramshackle, scary looking suburbs, and past some lovely upmarket suburbs too. The immediate ... read more

Episode 8 (Thursday September 23, 2010) Blogged by Craig Hi everyone. Hope all is well back home - we will be back there shortly. We have come full circle. Having arrived in the UK five weeks ago, we are now back in the grand city of Londinium, as the Romans named it. Our great run with the weather has been capped off by an unusually warm week here in London for this time of year (yesterday, it was 25 degrees !). London is a great city, packed with history, iconic buildings and cool pop culture. And the whole place heaves with activity at night, in the bars and restaurants, even on week nights. We have spent the past four days doing the touristy stuff. We went inside both Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace. (The later is ... read more

Episode 7 : Oxford to St Albans via BADGERS ! Sunday Sept 19, 2010 Hi everyone. Firstly, thanks again to all those who have been leaving comments for us (Sally, Marja, Shell, Leon, Rodd , Kev ,Steve and others). In the previous blog, I talked about Stonehenge and Bath and Oxford. From Oxford we drove North (ie, Ross drove- since I cannot drive manuals, ...he, he, he.....) We went North through The Cotswolds. This area is quintessential England - renowned for its picture postcard villages of honey-coloured stone cottages and thatched roof houses in green rolling hills (no drought here). We stopped at various little places with cutesy names, such as Stow-on-the-Wold, Chipping Campden and Upper Slaughter (well, maybe not that one). Mum and Pat, you would be in pensioner heaven, as most of these places ... read more

Episode 6: Salisbury- Stonehenge-Bath-Oxford (Wednesday Sept 15, 2010) Hello everyone. We heard that there has been a lot of rain in Southern Australia. Hope our back sun room is not now a pool. The weather here is now mild - as opposed to warm - with evenings getting cool. We spent a relaxing few days in Brighton, pottering around and not doing too much. On our last night, we were walking down the street and passed an apparent homeless guy, wearing a beanie and wrapped in a blanket. With hand outstretched, he said as we passed: "Can you spare some change for hair dye? I'm a ginger." After enduring the obligatory fish ' n' chips by the sea side, we said goodbye to Brighton, to its pier, its beach of large pebbles, its groovy cafes and ... read more

Wednesday September 8, 2010 Episode 5 (I think): Southern England Greetings from England. We flew from Amsterdam to London Gatwick then picked up a hire car. After driving in circles for about 20 minutes, we finally got out of the Gatwick airport area and headed East, bound for Canterbury. Ross has been doing an excellent job driving, given the umfamiliar car and road conditions, however, he has had a masterful navigator. In Canterbury, we checked into the Falstaff hotel (named after my fave Shakespearian character, the drunken rotund Falstaff). It was charming, with low ceilings and exposed timber beams etc. Canterbury is the site of the world heritage lised Gothic Cathedral, which was awesome. It is, of course, the seat of Christianity in England, and where the Archbishop Thomas Beckett was slain by the King's henchmen ... read more

Saturday September 4, 2010 (by Craig) Amazing Amsterdam ! We have just spent the past few days staying with Steve McDonald in Amsterdam (The Netherlands, or Holland). We have had an excellent time - thanks so much to Steve for his hospitality and for showing us around. It has been over 20 years since I was last in Amsterdam and my memory of the city was very stetchy. We had a mild sunny weekend and got out and about on a great wallking tour of the city, interspersed by stops at some fine pubs (many that you had also been to , Kevin). We ate savoury pancakes and also smoked herring in rolls from the streets, and gauked at all the funky people, especially in Jordaan and NeuiMarkt areas. As a cyclist, I really appreciated how ... read more

Episode 3: Paris and Belgium Thursday September 2 , 2010 (by Craig) Hello everyone. I hope all is well in your neck of the woods. Thanks to all who left comments (Rodd, Leon; Colin et al). We left the Loire Valley last week and headed by train to Paris. Before leaving, we spent half a day at two of the nearby chateaux (medieval French castles/palaces). Chateau Villandry was amazing, primarily for its magnificent manicured gardens, which looked like a huge patchwork quilt of colours. The best gardens Ive ever seen anywhere (Google Image: Villandry). The whole of Loire Valley is world heritqge listed ; if you come to Paris, be sure to go south by 2 hours to see the chataux here. We spent a weekend in Paris. We had seen all the major sites in ... read more
