Singapore has finally arrived!! Time to see some familiar faces, time to kickback in a snazzy hotel, time to enjoy some flash meals and, above all, time to walk down some CLEAN streets - no sewage, not even chewing gum to turn our tired noses up at!! India was a truly wild experience (and no regrets) but, phew...its good to be back in civilization! After hopping on and off three planes from Mumbai (and squeezing in a snooze in Kuala Lumpur) we touched down in Changi Airport. We were both by this point really excited to see our parents - my mum and dad would be arriving later that evening and Claires expert powers of persuasion meant her dad had already touched down in Singapore after booking a late deal. After hopping on the completely spotless ... read more

Mumbai... I really don’t know where to start. After a couple of weeks on the coast we were apprehensive about going to another of Indias major cities. However we had had five days on the beach and were looking forward to another fast paced city. We had yet another grueling train journey but where lucky enough to meet some really friendly Indian students from Calcutta and chatted to them for most of the journey, learning about there culture and way of life and of course being quizzed on ours! Them students and us backpackers had a common goal on arrival in Mumbai – cheap accommodation! We decided to stick together a went on a mission to find a place to stay. As we left the station and entered central Mumbai we wondered if we had actually ... read more

OK guys India is getting easier! If Bangalore was the deep end (and maybe Kerala was us starting to enter shallower waters) then in Goa we have definately found the kids paddling pool! We have arrived in the land of sun kissed beaches, chilled out bars and restaurants serving up some of the freshest seafood your nervous Delhi-Belly could ever have wished for. And if that ain't chilled out enough then throw in a large handful of ageing Brit hippies who still fancy themselves as "philosophers", "poets" and "musicians". Not that it was so easy to reach this laid back paradise. A soul destroying 14 hour over night train journey with the usual Indian public transport freebies (a urine based diet for your nostrils and a complimentary chest infection). Saying that the grub, as per usual, ... read more

Asia » India » Kerala February 22nd 2011

So we are up bright and breezy to leave not so cutie Ooty and head for Kerala. On leaving the hotel I am confronted with five men standing in a line doing their business in the street - lovely!! If I wasn’t looking forward to the Keralan backwaters before, I certainly was now. We just had to conquer a 14 hour bus journey - this consisted of people constantly being sick on the bus (in the sweltering heat!), no air-con or fan, no toilet breaks, 70 people on a 50 seater bus and the conductor stealing some of our cash - Worst. Journey. Ever! We then arrived at a hotel room at around midnight which was swarming with cockroaches. Arrrrrrggggghhhhhh - this was the only day of the trip so far that we both wanted to ... read more

"This.Is.Mental..." Staring at each other, wide eyed and open mouthed in the back of a nuts rickshaw drive through downtown Bangalore, just what had we let ourselves in for? So here we are - our constant cravings to "escape the tourist trail" and "get off the beaten track" has led us to the land of colourful sarees, rich spicy food, hectic cities and, unfortunately, the rather inescapable smell of s**t! Researching our newly purchased Lonely Planet had been bypassed whilst lazing about on the sweltering beaches of Thailand. And our knowledge and experience of the Indian subcontinent was so little that even our imaginations didn't have the tools to paint a picture of what the next three weeks might behold. "Ach it will be fine...Incredible !ndia as the slogan goes..." Before even arriving in India we ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Railay February 14th 2011

Enough!! We've loved the party town and packed beaches of of Phi Phi but its time to get some peace and quiet!! Step forward Railay: beautiful, peaceful, laid back Railay. A rock climbing mecca hemmed in between two huge jungle clad peaks. And the treasure resting below these curvacious cliffs doesn't disappoint either – chalky white sand and crystal clear water. So grand is Railays towering landscape that no large boats can get near its shore – nor can any roads be built to connect the mainland that lies beyond its rocky borders. You were stunning Phi Phi but its a silver medal I'm afraid. OK OK I will lay off the adjectives now! As you might have guessed we were quite fond of Railays charms! Of course our arrival here was not quite as smooth ... read more

The last three days have been an absolute mission - more death defying bus journeys, an over night sleeper train (Our beds right beside toilet) and almost missing our flight to the islands all for the sake of a BigMac!! On this final note I have to say we are complete idiots! We had a whole day of pottering around in Bangkok before our 8.30pm flight to Phuket. At 7pm we decide to go roaming the streets for a McDonalds and whilst we were deliberating over Fanta/Coke and BBQ/Chilli sauce the last call was being made at Gate B2 for two idiotic Scots who were about to miss their flight! By 8.10pm I am running through the airport with twice my body weight on my back (rucksak) and James balling at me to hurry up! Stressful ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Luang Prabang February 4th 2011

I will start this blog by saying that the journey from Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang was one that we thought might be our last! The roads were absolutely mental and we spent most of the journey hanging onto the side of the cliffs!! We made it though and the scenery on the way was some of the most beautiful we have seen in Asia, very mountainous and green. Kate and Laura had left for Luang Prabang straight after the tubing and for this I take my hat off to them, those roads on a drunken hangover = hellish! On our first day we were up at the crack of dawn to see the monks collecting the alms(rice/food) in the main street. A long line of orange stretched for as far as the eye could see. ... read more

A Bunch of Tubes in Sunny Laos! Sabaideee!!! Thats hello to you and me...! Well after weeks of buses, borders, temples and markets the time had finally come to catch up with some old friends. Months earlier we had deliberated where and when we could meet and after much toing and frowing the stunning Laos outback was strategically chosen for our rendezvous. No coincedence then that this was the one place we could truly let out hair down and do what comes most naturally to young Scots abroad – ie. drink lots of booze and act like complete *##%*!! Oh yes, it was time to descend on the stunning Vang Vieng Valley and try our hands at the ancient Laos tradition of tubing!! After meeting up with Tina and Paul back in Vietnam, we all headed ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Red River Delta » Hanoi January 27th 2011

Hey everyone! After leaving Hoi An behind it was a hop, skip and jump up the Vietnamese coast to the coastal town of Hue. We were really looking forward to this stopover as we had arranged to meet up with Claire's friend Tina and her boyfriend Paul here. We spent the rest of the afternoon exchanging travel tales before all catching our first sleeper bus up to Hanoi. After surviving countless Vietnamese action movies, blaring local radio shows, fellow travelers motion sickness, constant toilet stops and the inexplicably small sleeper bunks (not designed with the Western frame in mind...) we arrived in Vietnams bustling capital city. Short of sleep and a little spaced out from the night's seemingly endless mix of entertainment we checked in at our guesthouse and spent the rest of the morning recuperating. ... read more
