A last-minute change to the itinerary, the original plan was to combine a castle and scotch tour on our way to Inverness our next city on our tour. Instead, we opted to drive along the northern coast of the top of Aberdeenshire to explore a few more potential villages for retirement summers. It was a good decision. It was another beautiful day in Scotland, we are beginning to believe it really doesn’t rain here. Before heading out of town we picked up our laundry that we had dropped off when we first got her, much cheaper and better service than our cleaners in Rhode Island. Then we drove to the Bridge o’Balgowine, up until 1827 the only northern route out of Aberdeen was over the river Don on this single-arch bridge. The first burgh as they ... read more

As I type this entry we are on the train from Inverness to Glasgow, meaning we are now in the final days of our trip. It’s a three-hour train ride, so hopefully I can get caught up on the last three days. They are shore entries as they were not jammed back days. After breakfast we headed out in the car to Montrose, the first potential summer retirement home of the day. The drive is getting easier for both me and Jerry. We did not really stop in Montrose but did a drive through it did not really speak to us as a place we would want to spend two months every year. From Montrose we headed up the shore line through Inverbervie, a tiny village that does not ever make the guide books. Jerry marked ... read more

Now that we have the car, our days don’t have to start as early so a bit more sleep is the side benefit of that. We were up at 7 and down to breakfast at 8:30. Breakfast was the standard everything for a Full Scottish, but two types of eggs, scrambled and fried. Remember fried in the UK means sunny side up. The whether was overcast, which makes for good driving. The day started at the farthest point South of the County Angus, Dundee. Dundee is not in the running for a potential summery retirement home, but it is one of the 7 cities in Scotland and close to other places we are considering, so we did want to see what it had to offer. The attraction here was the Dundee Law. It is about a ... read more

Today we head north to Aberdeen and the eastern shoreline. The real purpose of this part of the trip is a bit of pre-retirement investigation. Our plan is to retire in either France or Spain (Carcassonne is currently the leading contender) and spend most of our time there, but when July and August come and the tourists, we are looking for somewhere a bit more remote but yet still accessible by train. This leads us to Scottish Coast. Ideally would be to find a lovey village like the one in Doc Martin. Our search will take us to several small villages along the coast, but more on that later. As for now, our train is at 9:30, allowing us a leisure final breakfast in the Old Waverly and a simple walk across the street to catch ... read more

We rearranged out Itinerary a little to allow a little extra sleep. We didn’t cut anything out, just reorganized. This allowed us to have breakfast at a leisurely pace then go up and get ready for the day. This made the first stop of the day lunch. It was back up the hill then down the other side to Victoria Street. This was Sunday, which in the UK is Sunday Roast Day, we have a Sunday Roast lunch scheduled for Glasgow, so today was just some traditional Scottish food, well at least for me. I have not built up to Haggis yet, but it is coming. Because it was Sunday, the restaurants were very busy and all running the Sunday Roast Specials. We had a 12:30 reservation at Howies. When we got there were just a ... read more

The day started with coffee in the room and then down to breakfast. The breakfast room was packed we got the last table. The usual buffet for the full, now called Scottish breakfast. The difference here is that they will also prepare eggs directly either fired or poached. A word on eggs. There are three basic ways to get eggs here, scrambled, poached or fried. Fried is always sunny side up, there is no concept of over easy, over hard, etc. In some places you can also get a 3-minute egg. I avoided the meat this morning and just had some scrambled eggs, potatoes and a croissant. Jerry had the same, just added his morning yogurt. We would need the energy for the day ahead, the hills of Edinburg. Our original plan for the day was ... read more

Once again, a long travel day. Up at 5:00 in a taxi to the ferry terminal by 6:15. The Stena Line departed for Cairnryan at 7:30 and we were in the Stenaplus lounge again so would order breakfast on the boat. This ferry was not near as nice as the ferry from Wales to Dublin. Much older, less seating in the lounge and staff not as pleasant. The food was ok, I had the Full Irish, Jerry had a continental. The boat was also not as clean as the first and the bathroom smelled like an outhouse. Other than that, it was a comfortable crossing even took a bit of a nap. The moment we stepped off the ferry, it was an entirely different feeling than Ireland. The sea air was fresh and clean, the country ... read more

Now a full week in to our trip, we really needed rest so we slept until 10:00. This was a good day to choose to sleep in as it was a full day of walking tour with no tickets or timed entry. After we did get up and ready for the day we took a cab to the Crown Liquor Saloon, perhaps the most famous pub in Belfast. The Crown is actually owned by the National Trust of UK (official conservation organization), it is across the street from the Europa Hotel (the most bombed hotel in the world). The first floor is your standard pub setting, but there are “confessional boxes,” booth built in the style of a confessional with a door so you have total privacy This was our spot for lunch, so we headed ... read more

Another early day, up at 5 to get ready to catch the train at 7:35. We were going to walk, but decided we just have to much luggage to make the easy. A very quick taxi to the train station. We had the first train out for the day, so it was already in the station. We boarded on time and first class on the Enterprise was 100 times more comfortable the on the train to Holyhead. They had just recently started food service again, and while it was not inclusive of the ticket price it was prices fairly. Seats are reserved and include your name above your seat so there is no confusion. The train of course left on schedule. It was a very beautiful journey; my pictures do not do it justice. I am a couple of days behind in the posting. Our days are pretty full and my normal blog time which is during wine-thirty, has been greatly reduced. Then, when we get back from dinner, we are exhausted. I am going to try to get caught up today. We are currently starting our second day in Belfast. First, a bit on the Irish weather. It reminds me a lot of Portland, yes because it rains a lot, but more because it can change in a heartbeat. Rain one minute sunny the next. It has been hard to judge if umbrellas are needed or not. Fortunately for us, every day the phone says it is going to rain it typically does it overnight, so we have had very good weather for the most of our trip so ... read more
