May Day in France Growing up, the first of May was celebrated by placing bouquets of flowers on people’s doors, well the neighbors we liked. I don’t really know where this tradition came from, but that is what we did. I do know that its origins date back to Roman and Celtic times and was a celebration of the beginning of the growing season. Now in Europe it is Labor Day and a national holiday in most countries celebrating the rights of workers and the 8-hour workday. We are headed to the heart of the Bordeaux wine region today and will not be impacted by the holiday, both lunch and dinner reservations are secured. Today also marks the halfway point of our trip. We will shortly be in Brittany and the primary focus of ... read more

Some Random Musings Sunday morning, well rested and just about at the halfway mark. I have a few moments to do a bit of blogging before we head down to breakfast then pack up the car and head towards Brive. We have never been to this region of France, so completely new experience. What we do know about Brive, is that during WWII it was the regional headquarters of the resistance and the first city in France to liberate itself from the Nazi’s without outside help. The population is around 56,000 and it has a train station (with TGV service.) The rest we will just discover when we get there. It is Sunday, so finding a place for dinner may prove to be a challenge, but I am sure we will find something, hopefully ... read more

The plan was to explore the town, the central market, the train station, real estate agencies to check our rents, but the best laid plans. Post Covid and Post 50, there comes that point in every trip, where our bodies just say NO. Today was that day. Jerry’s allergies were really bothering him, and the aches and pains for both of us just required a day of rest. I went down to breakfast and at the end had a tray made for Jerry and brought it back to the room for him. One of my fondest memories of this place was the three-minute egg machine and it was still here. I did not master it today, but I will tomorrow. It really takes more like 5 minutes, but both of my attempts were under cooked, the ... read more

A Change in Plans Sometime during the day at Chateauneuf, we received an e-mail from the restaurant we were going to be having lunch at when we arrived in Toulouse, informing us of some major street and parking closures in the center. The parking structure we were going to use and the central metro stop were all closed for the day, and would make getting to and from the restaurant difficult. Well, it was also going to make getting to and from our hotel almost impossible and getting around the city even more difficult. That e-mail changed entirely the direction of our travels. The next three days were to be Perpignan (near the Spanish boarder), Toulouse and Pau. We needed to make some decisions, so we decided to not go to Perpignan or Toulouse and instead ... read more

As I write this entry, it is actually April 29, and we are in Millau (much more on why we are here later) so if I switch tenses, please forgive me. Chateauneuf-du-Pape was the summer residence of the Popes when they were based in Avignon. The papal palace in Avignon is quite spacious and elaborate (we have only seen it from the outside) but those poor popes needed a break from such splendor and headed north about 25 miles to Châteauneuf. It probably wasn’t called that until after the popes started living there. There is not much left of the Chateau, mostly ruins. It sits on top of a hill overlooking the village and is arguably the best wine region in the world. Châteauneuf-du-pape is my favorite wine and the most interesting in style. All French ... read more

Today starts the main reason for coming to France for this trip. It is time to start the research of which village or city will become our future home. This section of the trip is also a week of one nighters, in several different cities. All of them are not potential future homes, but several are a possibility. The next few days the title of the days entry will be the City we spend the night. The first stop is Grenoble. Before I get into the day’s events, of which there were not many, just a few musings on Lyon. The most important is that Lyon has completely redeemed herself from our first trip. Better hotel, better food, and just an overall nice experience. The breakfast crowd each morning was a hoot, all retired couples traveling ... read more

Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Lyon April 25th 2023

It’s Tuesday in Lyon, so it must be time for a cooking class. As is our tradition, we try to always take at least one cooking class on every one of our trips. Unfortunately, that did not happen last year on our Ireland/Scotland trip. It is simply not possible to go to France and not take a market hands on class and what better place the Lyon, the “gastronomic center of the world” or so said a critic in the 30s. This entry will be short, but plenty of pictures. We knew there would be a great deal of walking and that we would be on our feet for most of the day, so we took a taxi. This was the best decision of the day, since the walk was straight up hill. The class was ... read more

We only had two things on our schedule for today: Musée des Beaux-Art and the Paul Bocuse Market. Even with only two things on the schedule we were still up at 6 am to get ready for the day and have breakfast. The breakfast here was pretty classic French breakfast, bread, cheese yogurt and fruit. The addition here was some sliced meats, mainly nice French ham, and hard-boiled eggs. The coffee was not as could as Hotel de Champs du Mar and the croissants were not as light and flakey., still better than anything back home. Today’s blog is going to be fairly short as I don’t have a great deal to say. We spent a few hours in the museum, which is in what was once a Benedictine Abbey dating back to the late 16thcentury. ... read more

First, pictures from yesterday’s blog are now up, camera issue has been resolved. I am writing this in the early evening of our first full day in Lyon. It was a full day, but more about that later. Sunday was transition day and the real beginning to our tour of France. Paris was just a little appetizer and adjustment city. The day started early, to shower, pack and have a quick breakfast before we checked out and headed to Gare de Lyon to catch our TGV to Lyon. The two women from Washington must have had a late night as they were not at breakfast this morning. We did have a nice conversation with the other man that was from Yakima Valley, turns out he is an estate attorney. Breakfast complete, a brush of the teeth ... read more

Due to Technical Difficulties, There are no Pictures (Camera is on Strike) The day started at 6 am, our normal get up during vacation time. If a certain someone did not take 90 minutes to get ready, we wouldn’t have to get up so early (no I am not that certain someone), in any event, down to breakfast at 8. Had several good conversations with other quest, the majority seemed to all be from Washington State. The woman couple at the table were off to Versailles for the day (Sunday is the better day as that is when the fountains are working), we gave them a few hints on their visit and some dinner tips for later in their trip. We woke up to pouring rain and I mean hard Portland Oregon Winter rain. Fortunately, we ... read more
