After travelling down the East coast of the USA we felt some R&R was in order, so booked a week’s stay in the Regal Palms resort in Orlando. The resort itself was okay, the town house we stayed in was much too large for us, we were rattling around in it a bit but it had everything we needed. The resort had a nice pool and bar so lucky for us the weather was doing something unusual for the year - staying at about 92 degrees. The major downside was the lack of WiFi in the town house, essential to our travels, and so we had to do any online stuff sat by the pool or sipping 2-1 beers - we feel your sympathy! We also spent some time looking at properties, cheap as chips, to ... read more

Well south it was and we decided to remain in Georgia, a few miles short of the Florida state line. A quick ‘google’ of the area gave us a few options and we decided to take a trip out to Cumberland Island. The original Cumberland is great, let’s see about this one. We caught the ferry out to the Island in the mist with a boat load of high school kids, our plan to find a bit of P&Q wasn’t starting well. The day was planned as a bit of exercise as well as some beach time so we set off through the forest and immediately walked into some wild horses. Like the New Forest, they have the right of way, but were more interested in the oodles of green stuff rather than 2 pasty brits. ... read more

North America » United States » Georgia » Savannah October 11th 2009

After the last, epic, entry this one is likely to pale in comparison for one main reason the weather. We moved on the hundred miles or so south from South Carolina into Georgia. Our destination was that other southern city we have all heard or read about, Savannah. Like Charleston, it reminds you of a bygone age, when life was tough but exudes that certain charm. As I said the weather conspired to ensure we didn’t see the City at its best. Whereas we’ve been able to enjoy everywhere we’ve visited so far by walking, now the heavens decided to open up and let us have it. Undeterred, we drove the beast into Savannah, parked up in the visitors centre and acted like lazy tourists and took a ‘hop on/off’ trolley tour. Savannah was founded in ... read more

Charleston was next on our itinerary, full of southern charm and hospitality. We stayed at James Island County Park the night before, just outside the city. It was a great site with a good trail for some power walking around the fishing lake and swamp areas. The only downside, with swamp come mosquitoes and within 5 minutes of arriving they were feasting on English blood. The site provided a bus into Charleston for a small fee and it was great not to have to manoeuvre the RV around small roads - a downside to driving your house. Into Charleston and once again the visitors centre was our first port of call, and like all the rest it was extremely useful. As the weather was absolutely gorgeous we decided to take off on a walk around the ... read more

We drove the last few miles to the end of the Blue Ridge Parkway and ended up at the gates of the Smokey Mountain National park. Just outside the park is Cherokee, home to the legendary tribe. (The Chief’s grandfather sends his regards Dad and said hope your scalp has healed). We parked up for the night in a National Park and went for a short walk, no electric, water, internet nothing but mountains, trees and rivers. Trust this night to be the coldest yet. Multiple layers of clothing do not make up for central heating. But it was lovely. (All the other RV’ers seemed to be cooking over open fires, seemed funny when we all had perfectly good gas cookers and microwaves, or maybe we missed the point). The next day we had to slightly ... read more

Up to now it has seemed like a holiday, a hectic one but a holiday all the same. Now for something new. We picked up our new home for the next two weeks, a giant 30ft RV (Big Camper Van) from Cruise America, bigger than the one we ordered but ‘no problem’ we said, that was before we had seen it. Loads of college types came and went but we were given the full induction (and still confused after that) how difficult can it be after a removal van? Wrong, it was huge, and we are going to do some real damage with that. After a few hours though it didn’t feel so bad however Lisa has yet to drive it and is secretly hoping that she won’t have to! The RV was actually relatively spacious ... read more

Washington DC, we could just say yeah it’s okay, but that would not be enough. The visit started well, the hotel we had reservations with was fully booked and to help them out we graciously let them pay for us to stay the night in another hotel, which we liked so decided to stay there and got a second night at half price - result! With little time on the first afternoon we decided to get the grey cells working and visit one of the Smithsonian’s and chose The National Museum of Natural History. Really we couldn’t do it justice in a few hours and could have happily spent a whole day there. We Brits are good for some things, apparently the Smithsonian Institution was founded by none other than an English scientist named James Smithson, ... read more

North America » United States » New York » New York September 24th 2009

The second part of our New York odyssey began when we made our way down to Battery Park to pick up our tickets to the Statue of Liberty. Before we left England Chris had heard on the TV that the Lady’s crown would once again be opened to the public and he immediately went on-line and booked us in for the climb to the top. Just as well because there was no chance in hell of us getting tickets on the day. The first stop was the Statue of Liberty and we eagerly made our way to the Ranger Station to hand in our tickets and go through the rigorous screening process - our tickets gave us preferential treatment here. The screening itself was in fact quite welcoming as we had to walk through a machine ... read more

New York, New York, do we ♥ it? Jury’s out. But here’s the first piece of travel advice from us. If you come to Manhattan, don’t take those tour busses that are everywhere. Walk. It’s amazing, it’ll give you neck ache but it’s so worth it (as they say here). When you get tired use the subway, it’s cheap and an experience, especially during rush hour. Anyway back to the trip, we foolishly decided to drive onto Manhattan. The drive down Long Island was easy but as you travelled through Brooklyn it was a lot busier. What driving did was give us the first spectacular view of the New York skyline, the famous view from Brooklyn is marvelous. Driving through the midtown tunnel the Garmin decided it didn’t want to work underground but blind luck, as ... read more

We arrived in Newport, Rhode Island, on the 19th September and the first thing we did was to ogle at the mansions or “Summer Cottages” that put Newport on the map. There is a great Cliff Walk, allowing us plebs to gaze on the magnificence of the opulent palaces, kindly built by the wealthy owners. It’s clearly marked that the walk is 3.5 miles but the heat must have been affecting us as we forgot about the fact there would be 3.5 miles to walk back to the car! The path was a bit rocky in places but was well worth the views it gave. Two of the better known previous inhabitants include Lady Astor and Cornelius Vanderbilt. One famed for scandal and the other for railways. A number of these mansions are now open to ... read more
