Europe » Slovakia » Kosice Region » Kosice January 29th 2015

In April 2008 while on a trip to Hungary I decided to travel to Slovakia by train with my Hungarian friend. I wanted to see another former Soviet bloc communist state in Eastern Europe besides Hungary and Poland. The following is an account of our visit to Kosice the second largest city in Slovakia. It was a cold morning when we set out for the railway station in Nyiregyhaza. The train was scheduled to leave at 7:30 but we arrived at the station well in time. An hour after leaving Nyiregyhaza the train pulled in at Miskolc where we had to change to another train for Kosice. However, we had to wait another two hours at the station for this train, so we spent some of the time to have breakfast at the station cafe. The ... read more

Of all the former Communist bloc nations in Eastern Europe, Hungary was the first country I went to. I was expecting it to be a run down place with grim shades of the Communist era, and dour looking people. On the contrary, it turned out to be a delightful experience, and I went back there another two times! My first trip to Hungary was in April 2005 when I joined a package tour leaving from Geneva, Switzerland to Budapest by EasyJet the well known European budget airline. I traveled to Geneva by train from Bourg en Bresse where I was living at that time. At Geneva airport I met up with the tour group which was mainly made up of elderly Swiss people. As usual, I was the only Asian in the group. After a two ... read more

When I lived in France my ex son in law came to visit me nearly every year. Although he is no longer married to my daughter we still have a cordial relationship up to this day. On each of his visits we would travel to another European country by air, rail and car. The following blog is about one of our trips, this time to Portugal. The month of March is still quite cold in many parts of Europe. However, when Jesse came to visit that year we were having spring-like weather and decided to go to Lisbon, the capital of Portugal for a couple of days. It was too far to drive so we booked on TAP Air which is the national carrier of Portugal. Bourg en Bresse the city where I lived at that ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome January 27th 2015

When I was living in France, my family came all the way from California, USA to visit me for Christmas one time. This blog is about our trip to Rome, Italy. I had been to Italy about 5 times previously, but never made it to Rome, and when I tell people about it they were quite surprised. So when my family came to visit me in France I accompanied them to Rome for a couple of days whirlwind tour of the city. We managed to purchase very cheap tickets on EasyJet, one of the better known budget airlines in Europe. The only thing was we had to take the flight from Geneva, Switzerland. Actually, that didn't pose much of a problem as Geneva is only about a 90 minute drive away from the city where I ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lombardy » Milan January 26th 2015

July is the best month to travel around Europe, so when my friends from Finland came to visit me in France, we took a road trip to Milan the second largest city in Italy. My first time in Milan was way back in 1983 when my Swiss friend took me there when I was visiting her in Lugano, Switzerland. I don't remember much of that trip, except that we went to see the Duomo which is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world. Needless to say, this is the city's main attraction. I do recall that when I was buying postcards near the cathedral I noticed that they were all made in China. Little did I know at that time that some 25 years later, almost all products sold in Europe were to be made in ... read more

Europe » Italy » Aosta Valley » Aosta January 25th 2015

As mentioned previously in one of my travel entries, when I was living in France, I used to make frequent day trips (mostly by car) in-country, as well as to neighboring countries. One of those journeys was to Aosta in Italy. It was late August in France, nearly the end of summer. I wanted to take advantage of the remaining days of summer and decided to travel to Aosta the principal city in the Aosta Valley region of the Italian Alps. We left home very early in the morning as it was only to be a day trip. The distance from Bourg en Bresse, the city where I lived in France, and Aoste (the French name fo Aosta) is approximately 235 kilometers or around 145 miles, and we were hoping to get there in about 3 ... read more

During my 8 year residence in France I had the opportunity to travel to other European countries. Here is one of my trips outside France. When I lived in France my ex son in law used to visit me often. He is a chef and is very interested in European cuisine. On one of his visits we went to the seaside town of Alassio in the Liguria region of Italy. I am very glad that we did because the journey took us along the Mediterranean coast of Italy known at the 'Italian Riviera.' This long stretch of coastline with picturesque towns and villages along the way remains one of the most scenic routes I have ever seen in my travels. Now, the Italian Riviera is not as well known as the French Riviera as the latter ... read more

We joined in celebrating the Year of the Horse with the annual Dragon Parade in Orlando, Florida. Last year it took place on Sunday, February 9th. Actually, it was a full week after the Lunar New Year, (commonly called Chinese New Year) I think, due to commercial interests. The parade was scheduled to start at 11 am with the various contingents and dancers in colorful costumes walking along the length of Hillcrest Street near downtown Orlando. We arrived there early to get good vantage points to watch the parade and take photos. As the most popular festival in Asian/Oriental culture, Lunar New Year is celebrated internationally in Asian countries, and also in Asian communities around the world. I was told that in Florida, the Dragon Parade is the only large-scale celebration for Lunar New Year, so ... read more

This list was made up recently and it is my own personal opinion. I am certain many of the Travel Blog members on here have perhaps, seen more breathtaking views than I have. If so, please post them here. I would be very interested to know what other spectacular sights other people have seen, and would like to share with all of us. I should mention too that this list is shown in alphabetical order according to the name of the city (in capital letters) where the sight is located. For example, number 1 is not necessarily my favorite place. ALL of them are my favorites! 1. Saint Nazaire cathedral, from the Orb River in BEZIERS, France. 2. Mont Blanc and the Alps, from a street in COURMAYEUR, Italy. 3. The Arabian Sea with coconut trees ... read more

Europe » Germany » North Rhine-Westphalia » Cologne January 16th 2015

It was April and still spring in Europe although the weather was turning better from the dreary winter months. We decided to visit my friend Grazyna who lives in Cologne, Germany - a distance of 680 kilometers or around 423 miles. It took us over 7 hours to arrive at her house. When I lived in France I had a good car, a Renault Safran which was ideal for long distance driving. However, we drove at a steady pace and stopped twice on the way to Cologne, Germany, once in Metz (in France) where fierce fighting took place during World War II between American and German forces. This battle lasted 3 months, and being a WWII history buff, I wanted to see some of the battlefield sites. The other stop was inside Germany, I can't remember ... read more
