We were in Granada, Nicaragua from the 28th until the 31st March, 2013. This blog is mainly about the places we saw in this beautiful city during the three full days of sightseeing. We took the TICA bus from San Jose, Costa Rica on Thursday, March 28th to Granada, Nicaragua. The TICA bus terminal in San Jose wasn't far from our hotel so we got a cab through our hotel, and arrived there in good time. We had to check in just like in any international airport, except there weren't any immigration or customs. From what I could make out, the passengers were mostly local, although I noticed an American family with kids. The bus left on time at 12:30 pm. We were told that the journey could take anywhere from 8 to 10 hours depending ... read more

Although I have traveled extensively throughout Asia, Europe and the United States, I have never been to the continent of South America. So in March/April of 2013 we flew to San Jose, Costa Rica for a 10 day Easter break holiday. The small country of Costa Rica in Central America has often been referred to as "the happiest place on earth." I am not sure whether this holds true or not, but we certainly saw a lot of happy looking people when we were in the capital city of San Jose which is also the economic and political heart of the nation. Our flight from Orlando, Florida by JetBlue took only 3 hours and because of the two hour time difference, we arrived in San Jose just before noon. The airport was smaller than what I ... read more

North America » United States » Florida » Tavares March 10th 2015

Last May we were in Lake county in the state of Florida. This county is aptly named because of the numerous natural lakes in the area. The town of Mount Dora is a popular destination for residents of Florida and visitors from out of state. It is only about an hour's drive from Orlando. We packed a picnic lunch and went there intending to spend a leisurely afternoon by the lake. Instead we ended up spending more time at Tavares, a small town on the shores of Lake Dora. Now, Tavares is not as well known as Mount Dora and we came upon it by accident. I am glad we did because we found Tavares to be much more charming and attractive than Mount Dora, which is heavily geared for the tourist trade. We were mostly ... read more

In February I started writing about this road trip but only covered Mississippi. We were also in Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana and Alabama. Here is the travelogue about the rest of the southern states we visited in July 2012. As this was going to be a rather long trip, we rented a car from AVIS and left Orlando around 9 in the morning, intending to pass through Georgia on our way to Alabama where we planned to spend the night. GEORGIA After crossing the state line into Georgia, we stopped for a while at a Visitors Welcome Center to pick up some maps and brochures. I would like to mention here that I like this about the USA, where there is always an Information office for visitors when you travel from state to state. Free coffee ... read more

North America » United States » Mississippi March 6th 2015

Two summer ago, we went on a one week road trip of the southern states of the USA. Here is the first part which is about Mississippi. TUPELO We entered the state of Mississippi the first time from Alabama. Our destination was Tupelo, the birthplace of the King, the one and only King of Rock 'n' Roll, that is. Memphis in the state of Tennessee is better known as being the home of Elvis Presley, but Tupelo was where he was actually born of poor parents, and lived his formative years in a two room house (more like a shack) on the outskirts of Tupelo. Tupelo is a small town and we didn't have any trouble finding it, or the location of the house where Elvis was born. I expected to see a lot of tourists ... read more

North America » United States » Florida » Ocala March 4th 2015

A couple of years ago, we went to Silver Springs Nature Park which is located in the city of Ocala in Florida. Ocala is a quaint little town where horses are bred, and it is known as the "horse capital of the world." It took us only about an hour from Orlando to drive to this park. Being a weekend, there were a lot of people on this nice day. A car show was also being held there which added to the atmosphere. Although the weather was quite hot we enjoyed going around the place, and saw a lot of fauna in their natural surroundings. We took two short river cruises, both times in a glass bottom boat and we could see different species of fish and amphibians underneath the boat, not to mention the alligators ... read more

North America » United States » California » Lodi March 1st 2015

In September 2011 we went on a road trip, planning to stop at interesting places along the way. One very interesting spot was the city of Lodi in California. "Just about a year ago, I set out on the road... Seekin' my fame and fortune... lookin' for a pot of gold... Things got bad, and things got worse... I guess you will know the tune... Oh Lord, I'm stuck in Lodi again" For those of you who are not familiar with this song, it was made popular in the 1970's by a rock band called Creedence Clearwater Revival (who also happens to be one of my all time favorite groups). After hearing this song many times on the radio back home in Yangon, Myanmar (known as Rangoon, Burma at that time) I have always wanted to ... read more

North America » United States » California » Santa Clarita February 28th 2015

In September 2011 we rented a car from Hertz, and went for a week long road trip. Our starting point was Santa Clarita in Los Angeles county, the city where my daughter and family live. This entry is about our travels and stops in these two Western states of the US. California to Oregon We were planning to leave my daughter's house early in the morning, but couldn't do so as the Hertz people told us to wait until they called us to pick up the car at their office in downtown Santa Clarita. They called us only around 10 am, and one of their employees came to fetch us. After completing all the paperwork at the Hertz office we took our rental car back to my daughter's house to load our luggage. We didn't have ... read more

North America » United States » California » San Francisco January 29th 2015

Before I moved permanently to the United States in 2011, I used to come to this country at least once a year, mainly to visit my family in California. On one of those trips we traveled by car from Los Angeles all the way to San Francisco. After spending a night at a friend's house in Half Moon Bay a coastal town approximately 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of San Francisco, we went to Sausalito which is situated on a hillside, just across the northern end of the Golden Gate bridge. It was a beautiful and sunny spring day in April, and when we arrived there we saw a lot of people along the waterfront enjoying the view across the bay. There are quaint little stores and houses in this area called Bridgeway Boulevard which also ... read more

North America » United States » Illinois » Chicago January 29th 2015

Some years ago, while on a visit to my old friend who lives in the city of Terre Haute in Indiana, USA we traveled to Chicago one time by car on a weekend. It was my first trip to this great American city, and I enjoyed it very much. We left my friend's house around 8 in the morning on a cool November morning. There were five of us, including myself in the large van; my friend, his wife, their eldest son John, and my friend's brother Winston who was also visiting from Australia. John did most of the driving. The distance from Terre Haute to Chicago is about 300 kilometers or about 185 miles, and John said the driving time would probably be a little over 3 hours. It actually took us three and a ... read more
