Geo: 51.855, -2.55054 After a very good night's sleep we ventured out from our new digs. We're outside of a small town in the Forest of Dean, west of Glouchester. We really thought we were staying in the Cotswolds, but discovered that area is much farther east of us. It's a wonderful house, parts of which date from medieval times. It has beamed ceilings and our hosts, Charles and Helen, are very nice. We headed to Bath today, stopping briefly in Bristol to see Bristol's symbol, the Clifton Suspension Bridge. Bristol is on the Severn Estuary, an arm of the Atlantic Ocean. In times past it was an seaport. The bridge spans the Avon Gorge (formed by the Avon River). When it opened in 1864 it was the longest span in the world at 702 feet. ... read more

Geo: 51.855, -2.55054We left the farm and headed north towards the Cotswolds to the home of Charles and Helen, our next Airbnb stay. First we headed a little south to Portsmouth, home of the British Navy. They've restored the old Dockyards and have several old ships there. The first one we saw was The Warrior the first iron-clad steam powered and sailing ship. Also there was Admiral Nelson's ship, the HMS Victory. We didn't have time to see Henry VIII's ship, the Mary Rose. The lines were too long into the building where it's kept. It sunk in 1545 and brought up in 1982, so is kept protected. We did go into a naval history museum at the Dockyards but, again, wished we'd had more time to fully explore the whole area. Then, back on the ... read more

Geo: 50.9051, -0.964376 Staying another day with Lizzy and Mike. It's nice to be able to stay in one place for more than a day! The rest of our trip will involve longer stays – 3 days in the Cotswolds and 6 in London. So with no where in particular to go, we slept late, then walked around the farm and down to the barns. We saw Mike down there and he told us about the farm and about the disappearance of small farms in Britain – same as in the US. He recently lost his father (who owned the farm) and is having a terrible time sorting through all the paperwork his father left unfinished (the father refused to share his knowledge with anyone). With the inheritance taxes they're not sure they can keep the ... read more

Geo: 50.8917, -0.959415 Still haven't caught up. Oh well. On Monday we had a long drive down from the Leeds area to our next stay – at a farm at Rowland's Castle, which is near Portsmouth at the very southern part of England. Most of our day was spent on the Motorways – Britain's interstate highways. One nice thing is that they periodically have "Service" areas, a sort of rest area/truck stop, but with food, gas, etc. - like they have on the interstates and turnpikes in some parts of the Northeast. They even had Burger King and Krispy Creme donuts (we resisted). On the way down we took a short detour to Oxford. Given our time restraints we got on a hop-on hop-off tour bus, and hopped off at Christ Church College, which dates from ... read more

Geo: 53.6915, -1.63284 Falling behind on our entries so may make them shorter until we catch up. We left Scotland behind on Monday. We definitely want to go back and explore more of this wild and wonderful country. We came down the east coast of the Britain. Meant to stop at Rosslyn Chapel but totally forgot about it until too late. Our first stop in England was at Holy Island (Lindisfarne). Holy Island is on the east coast - on the North Sea. A long causeway connects the island to the mainland - but only during low tide. If you stay too long, you're stuck until the tide goes back out. Holy Island is the site of an medieval monastery founded by Irish monks in 635. It was the center of Celtic Christianity in northern Britain. Today ... read more

Geo: 55.9503, -3.18761 2 blogs today (maybe – it's getting late, and we're exhausted). We got in too late last night to send anything out. We left the Highlands today. Back past Ben Nevis and the gorgeous and wild Highland mountains and glens. We're on our way to Edinburgh for the Military Tattoo – no we're not getting ink. It's a spectacle of music and dance with the Edinburgh Castle in the background. There are performances by military bagpipe and drum bands, Scottish dancers, and other groups from around the world. This year performance included groups from South Korea, Mexico, Mongolia and New Zealand. Incredible! On the way we stopped at the Falkirk Wheel. This is a one of a kind rotating boat lift, joining the top canal with the bottom one (100' feet apart) without ... read more

Geo: 56.7919, -5.26794 Started out with a "Full Scottish Breakfast." OMG! My pants are tight. Today we rode on the Hogwarts Express. Well, kind of. It's the Jacobite Steam Train from Fort William to Mallaig on the coast. But one of its engines (painted red for the movies) and some of its coaches were used in the Harry Potter movies. We crossed the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct with 21 arched spans. And just as I was about to snap an incredible picture of the crossing… my camera battery died. :( Instead, you get this fuzzy blue picture from my phone. The scenery all the way up and back was gorgeous, and the steam train an adventure. When the train suddenly came to a halt on the way back I said to Charlie, “Dementors... read more

Geo: 56.4104, -5.46972Glasgow to ObanPicked up a rental car in Glasgow. Aaacckk! Driving on the left side of the road! It seems strange sitting in the passenger side of the car on the left. Charlie's still getting used to driving on that side, and Mary is white-knuckled.We're on our way to Oban, where we'll attend some "Highland Games.” Oban is on the west coast of Scotland – in the Highlands. It was a lovely drive there with many stops (Loch Lomond) and a long detour when a road was closed. Actually, the detour turned out to be beautiful – through moors, past Ben Nevis – the highest mountain in Great Britain. Highland Games are like a fair, but with lots of competitions. If you've seen Braveheart, you might remember when Wallace came back to his home ... read more

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236The flight over was pretty uneventful. Our plane left late but we still had time for our connection in Newark. We got lucky and had an empty seat between us on the flight from Newark to Heathrow – one of the few on the plane, so we had a little more room – but oh how we long for 1st class and those nice roomy seats that recline all the way.Landed at Heathrow, got a UK SIM card – but the key to unlock our cell phone didn't work. Now we're on a train to Glasgow. We can't get the free internet that we had spent points on before leaving - the code didn't work. So we're unconnected. Charlie's concerned with the electronics. But there's a certain amount of freedom being unconnected. And we ... read more
