Geo: 42.6695, -2.0291Monday and Tuesday, May 2-3. We really enjoyed our stay in Pamplona. It's a city we definitely need to come back to someday. It was 38 degrees F on our way out of town, where we saw a pilgrim in a kilt. No bagpipes though. Gorgeous scenery on the way up. Going up to Alto de Perdon was cold and windy, but was one of the highlights of our Camino so far. The walk down was rough and rocky. We had our packs transported today – and there they were when we arrived at the albergue in Uterga. Next on to Maneru – another not-so-long day, and I managed to carry my pack all the way! I do think I'm getting stronger. "Real" albergues both days. Luckily I get the bottom bunk, and th ... read more

Geo: 42.818, -1.64422I don't know if my entry from yesterday went out. Somehow it had us in Zurs Lichtenstein instead of Zubiri, Spain. I'm having trouble remembering how to use TravelPod (not the easiest of interfaces). We haven't been updating for a couple of reasons - mostly because we're exhausted at the end of our day or don't have an internet connection. We have a great day today - yesterday was our anniversary 28 years and we splurged on an AirB&B apartment in Pamplona. So here's some of where we've been and what we've been doing the past week.Sunday, 4/24. After a train ride from Barcelona we were picked up at the train station by Istvan who with his wife Barbara run an albergue (hostel) in Viscarette, Spain and who will transport us by car over ... read more

Geo: 41.3879, 2.16992We're finally at a place (café) where we have internet access. On Wednesday we started our 2 plus month adventure. It started out uneventful, with our housesitters dropping us off early at the airport. Then we found out that the plane for the first leg of our journey (to Washington, DC Dulles) had been hit by lightning and our flight would be delayed. We would miss our connection to Frankfort in Dulles so they had us run 2 gates down to instead catch a flight to Newark (luckily we hadn't checked our backpacks), then directly on to Barcelona. Woo hoo! One less plane change and Economy Plus (extra legroom) all the way. After a sleepless flight (2 movies and Sudoku) we arrived in Barcelona and have been here the past 3 days. I've had a harder ... read more

Geo: 29.8973, -97.6783Okay. Another blog from us. Another trip. We're walking the Camino de Santiago, an ancient pilgrimage route across northern Spain. If you've seen the movie, The Way" - that's it. If not, we highly recommend it. It's 500 miles long from St. Jean Pied de Port in France to Santiago de Compostela near the west coast of Spain. Most people will take around 35 days to walk it. We're giving ourselves twice that. Our goal is 10 miles average per day, so 50 days right there. We have 3 days in Barcelona at the start, several rest days along the way and some time at the end in Portugal. If we finish sooner than 70 days I guess we'll go somewhere else in Europe. We've been training for over a year now - more ... read more

Geo: 29.8847, -97.6697Actually we've been back since late Friday, as those who have suddenly gotten many more emails from us have suspected. The trip back went well. It was a direct flight (10 hours) so no plane changes. Customs was smooth. They didn't even open our bags and the only thing we had to explain to them was about having been on a farm. But when we got to our car it wouldn't start. Hmmmm. Luckily the parking place had a guy whose job it was to help start cars so we were out of there in 15 minutes. It's Wednesday, and we're still jet-lagged. I don't know why it's taking us so long this time. We struggle to stay up past 8 pm!All and all it was a wonderful trip. We wish we'd had more time in ... read more

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236I don't know if I feel sad or relieved that today was the last full day of our stay in London. We started the day out with a trip to the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. We went with a tour guide who was highly recommended by Trip Advisor rather than figure it out by ourselves. It was a good decision. Matt from Fun London Tours took us on a 2 hour tour from Piccadilly Circus down to Buckingham Palace, pointing out items of interest along the way. There were only 6 in our group, so we got lots of personal attention. He showed us where to stand to get the best views - not of the actual changing of the guard (which is so far away it's hard to see anything) ... read more

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236We had a fascinating conversation with our host Gary last night. He is quite the English gentleman and has an interesting history. Since he has a personally inscribed photo of Margaret Thatcher on the desk in the room we're staying, I asked him if he really knew her - and he did! He worked for her for several years before she was the prime minister and stayed close to her. He compared her to the Queen Mother inasmuch as she treated everyone the same -- no matter their station in life. So I had to ask - did he also know the Queen Mother? And he did. Well, not well, but had met her on several occasions. He has a lot of insight and opinions on the state of Britain today. Our 4th day ... read more

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236I'll try to catch up today with quick summaries of the past 3 days. Sunday: We ventured out on our first full day on London. We went to Mass at Westminster Cathedral (not to be confused with Westminster Abbey which we're visiting Wednesday). It was a beautifully sung Mass in a beautiful setting. The cathedral was started in 1895, just a few years after the Catholic hierarchy was allowed to be restored in England.Afterwards we looked around the church and had tea and scones (1st time!) in the little cafe downstairs. We hopped back on the "tube" and headed for the British Museum. You could spend several days there seeing everything, so we just hit the highlights - the Elgin marbles, the Rosetta stone and many other incredible things. What I really liked about ... read more

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236 We're off to London today - for a 6-day stay and the last leg of our journey. On the way we stopped at Avebury, a village enclosed by the largest prehistoric stone circle in Britain. Avebury dates to 2800 BC, 6 centuries older and 16 times as large as Stonehenge. Britain is home to over 800 stone circles. Unique to Avebury is a long processional avenue leading 1 1/2 miles with a double line of stones. After spending an hour or so walking around we headed to Heathrow Airport on the Motorway. This was the most convenient place to drop off our rental car, and - thankfully - we got a "no damage" report when we turned it in. We say thankfully because with all those narrow roads, some just one way, with no shoulder ... read more

Geo: 51.6999, -2.69966 We were beat from Thursday's excursion to Bath and decided that instead of exploring the Cotswolds (quaint, quintessential English villages about 50 miles away) we would rest and relax and stay closer to home. So we slept late, and then Charles, our host, showed us around his wonderful English garden. I'm so jealous of all the different plants he can grow that we can't grow in our dry and alkaline Texas soil (like peonies). So we decided to pop over to Wales - just 10 miles away, even though visiting Wales was not on our itinerary. We drove down the beautiful Wye River Valley, which divides England and Wales. All the signs are in Welsh first, with English below. We had lunch in Monmouth, a quaint village, and it was interesting to hear the ... read more
