The wind had really gotten up by the time we'd showered and changed and were ready to hit the town. Timing climbing off the boat was an issue as it was pulling away from or pushing into the wall with every gust. We all got off in one piece and went across the road, our hair (well, mine and Becky's, Fred and Mike are both members of the shaven head/ 'combover for the 21st century' club) being whipped across our faces as we struggled against the wind. Inside the town we were sheltered somewhat by the city walls (Avignon is a fortified town) and wandered around looking for somewhere to eat and drink. We found a funky little latino bar on the corner of a square and ordered food and cocktails. It was rammed and we ... read more

We left at 8.15am with the mistral still blowing. However, as it was moving with rather than against us it actually helped us move a bit faster and didn't cause too many problems – unlike its sister scirrocco a few weeks earlier! We chatted, watched Tv, listened to music, continued to transfer music to my laptop and looked out at the windswept landscape as we raced down the Rhone. Our second lock of the day was Bollene at half one – the deepest in Europe. I took the ropes to lasso this one as it was a momentous moment for us … and I hit the target first time. As we entered the lock the depth gauge on our fishfinder read 104 feet. Once secured we took only 10 minutes to drop 82 feet. There were ... read more

We departed before 10am on an overcast and chilly morning after saying our goodbyes to Chris and Phil as we weren't sure we'd see them again. Phil told us with a big grin that he'd learnt more about drinking in the last 3 days than he had in 40 years at Whitbread. He had been introduced to Mike cocktails and Mike was pleased to hear this snippet! We were really pleased to have met them and had such good fun – we hoped we'd see them again. As we motored down river the sun made an appearance and we took the roof down, bundling up in jumpers to keep warm. Becky and I behaved like tourist geeks looking out for the 'sights' in the Rhone navicarte and photographing them as we passed. We saw the three ... read more

The next day we went off exploring. We could see a vineyard all up a big hill opposite and the little guide book the guy in the marina office had given us said there was a woodland walk to a wine producers. We set off to do that. It was a lovely walk through woods, past streams and vineyards and amongst nature. It was almost all uphill so was a good way to blow out the cobwebs from the night before! We picked fresh mint we found growing along the way as fred had suggested we make mojitos later. When we finally arrived at the Chateau itself we found it closed. We couldn't taste wine after all. Gutted. Still the walk had been nice and we could see out over the town from the top of ... read more

Whilst Mike carried out fruitless searches of the marina bottom for his spear, I cooked breakfast and Becky did the dishes while we chatted. After giving up on the hunt for the spear and eating some croissants and egg, we headed off for the mighty Rhone. I handed Becky and Fred their life jackets as we approached the first lock. They looked a bit worried. “Oh, don't worry, it's safe,” I said “But it's the law to wear life jackets in the locks on the Rhone.” They looked happy enough. The locks on the Rhone were the biggest we'd seen yet, and must have been pretty impressive for fred and Becky who were experiencing their first lock ever. Fred took pictures and they both sat on the roof helping me with the ropes. I lassoed the ... read more

Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Lyon February 2nd 2011

Becky and Fred arrived on a sunny afternoon and came back to the boat. On the way we saw our Algerian friend and his wife again who chatted for at least half an hour and invited us to attend the opening of their restaurant in December 2011. He told us the mayor of London was coming over, as Lyon had established partnerships with London. “Who, Boris Johnson?” Mike asked “White hair?” Fred said. “Yes, yes,” the man replied “A nice man, but a bit crazy.” It may be an option if funds allow....It looks like the area is going to be affluent and popular; an international footballer whose name I can't remember has already bought a penthouse flat overlooking the marina. I wouldn't mind a bit of hob-nobbing with the rich and famous! Once back on ... read more

As I write this, I am sitting on Ozzy 2 in Lattes marina having packed my backpack for 3 months in Asia after 10 days at home. We fly in 3 days … I've worked out I have around 14 blogs to catch up on! I will endeavour to do it all now so I can post in real time from Asia... Lyon was amazing. We spent a few days exploring it by bike, river and foot before Becky and Fred arrived. We visited the Ancient Roman part of the town, a UNESCO world heritage site, perched atop a hill accessible by funicular railway (basically carriages on winches) next to a gloriously ornate and majestic cathedral. The Roman town was fab and I had a little go on the stage of the ampitheatre (when in Rome....), ... read more

Europe » France » Burgundy » Macon January 31st 2011

Getting to Lyon... we headed off the next day in the drizzle but without the scirocco. We managed 1 lock and a few hours of dreary, wet bobbing along before the rain got horrendous and we gave up. The marina at Macon was full, so we tied up alongside the free moorings in the town. I got soaked to the skin in the process. Our plan had been to explore the town and sniff out the wine festival that we'd been reliably informed by our dear Chris and Phil was happening. The gods of weather had other plans. As the rain hammered down heavily onto the roof we poured a couple glasses of wine, I cooked and we cosied down for the night with a DVD. The rain didn't let up all night. Macon was still ... read more

Mike and I prepared to head off on the sunday morning. A warm wind was blowing quite strongly into the harbour so we gave a big shove off the pontoon, assisted by Chris and Phil who told us they'd be following on soon. After about half an hour on the river Saone, which was far bigger than I'd imagined, we had to put the roof back up because the wind was making it flap about too much and was threatening to blow me away. Another half an hour later and there were white horses on the surface of the river, I'd had to climb out and bring in all our boat hooks and Ozzy was getting thrown about. Surely this wasn't right? We got a text from Chris and Phil saying how wild it was and ... read more

The mooring at Fragnes was lovely – electricity, showers, water and a really friendly and helpful young woman in the office. The wi-fi was really unreliable, but we set up camp for a few days so we could do some jobs and celebrate Mike's 30th. The following day was Mike's 30th and I woke early to make him breakfast in bed, champagne and present him with his card and present. I'd managed to lose him for a while the previous day whilst I bought him something and had made his card ages before on a sunny day on the river – it was a map of france with our route so far and some of the highlights of the trip. I was very pleased with it and so was Mike … I'd even drawn on the ... read more
