The crossing from Koh Phangan to Koh Tao was not the most pleasant one! As we waited for the boat, wind and rain picked up out of nowhere and the sea was lumpy to say the least! As a hardened sea gypsy I was fine and sat below reading my book, but Mike and at least two thirds of the other passengers crammed themselves out on deck in the rain to get fresh air and look at the horizon to settle their lurching tummies. Several people threw up and the guy next to me was green most of way and clutching a sick bag whilst his girlfriend stroked his hair so the sight of the turtle shaped island of Koh Tao approaching was most welcome indeed!! Koh Tao is a diving mecca and we'd been warned ... read more

We LOVED Koh Phangan! After our scooter experiences at Koh Samui, we rented one as soon as we got off the ferry and headed out in search of budget accomodation. We wanted to be fairly close to to Ban tai beach as the Black Moon party (full moon's slightly smaller and less teeny bopper cousin) was to be held there the day we arrived. After 20 or so minutes scootering about we found some lovely huts just off Ban Tai beach. They were cheap, cheerful and had great views of and access to the beach – ideal! Something just didn't feel right though … for somewhere that should be commencing a huge beach party in a few hours there were few signs of life. Zombified looking groups sat and lay about the bar area of our ... read more

After catching the 'drug runner' multi engined speedboat back to the mainland from Koh Tarutao we wandered in the heat of the day to find the bus station to get back to hat yai (the bus itself was quite something – neon upholstery, pink and green panelling and a TV playing Thai pop music videos, which all seemed to centre around a love triangle, the whole journey!), then tuk-tuked to the pier to cacth the night ferry to Koh Samui...night ferries are the best way to travel between the islands in my humble opinion as they're cheaper than the day ones and you get a bed for the night … saving you the cost of a hostel! The crossing was calm and peaceful and we managed to grab a few hours sleep. Once we'd docked we ... read more

I could wax lyrical for hours about the tropical idyll that is the island of Koh Tarutao. Former prison and setting of TV's 'Survivor' (2002), this island is a place where we homo sapiens are in the minority. As we pitched our tent on the white sandy beach of Ao Pante, mike and I felt like tiny solitary specks amongst the craggy hillsides, dense jungle, miles of empty beach and tranquil turquoise seas. We had found all we had been looking for...nature, solitude, beauty and not a bar, Tuk-tuk, hawker or neon light in sight. Bliss. Because tarutao is a protected National Marine Park, mankind has not been able to spread his grubby paws too wide, which means flora and fauna are abundant and diverse on this unspoilt island. We stayed a week in all so ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Railay March 5th 2011

Railay is an archetypal tropical paradise. Rocky outcrops spring from dense jungle full of wildlife and surrounded by white sandy beaches, lush mangroves and a still and stunning turquoise sea. As soon as our eyes beheld it from our little longtail boat on the Andaman sea we fell in love. Our first 2 nights were spent in tree house type accommodation at yaYa resort and our third night was spent atop a steep flight of stairs in the outskirts of the jungle in a little wooden bungalow at Rapala. I loved both resorts (though resort conjures up slightly more fancy images!) but would recommend Rapala over YaYa - it's cheaper, has hammocks and is actually in the jungle. YaYa is busy and quite touristy as it's so close to the boat stop on East Railay. We ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok March 5th 2011

Sweaty, hustling, bustling, muggy, lively,, bright, dark, busy, smelly (in good ways and bad), hot, humid, ugly, beautiful .... just a few adjectives one could employ to describe the chaotic urban melting pot that is Bangkok .... possibly the only capitol city in the world where you could get run over by a shop. We found our digs for our 2 night stay in a funky little backstreet between a temple and KhaoSan Road, assisted by Lee, a 40 something cockney we'd met on the plane to Mumbai, who talked more than I did, and Woyeciek, a twenty something Czech who'd met Lee on the plane to Bangkok and was more laid back than even Mike was. Our room at the sawasdee welcome was clean-ish and had a lot of creature comforts for the bargain basement price ... read more

13.02.2011 Woke up feeling like death warmed up! The big hello/goodbye drinking session last night clearly took its toll....6 months in France have definitely gotten me out of practice with the UK binging! A few deliberate throw ups and a roast dinner later and I started to feel human again.... Our train to London was delayed by an hour .. not pleasnt when attired in sandals and 3/4 lengths to save on luggage space ... attracted several baffled looks.... rail co. arranged for us to be taxi-ed to airport from Reading as we had missed connecting train so that was pleasant - shared a cab with a woman on the way to Columbia who was lovely. Arrived in airport at midnight and Mike managed to sleep on the floor but I didn't. Was zombie-like by the ... read more

Europe » France » Languedoc-Roussillon » Aigues-Mortes February 3rd 2011

Aigues Mortes is my favourite place on our trip so far – it has everything I love all in one place … nature, history, beauty, lovely locals, booze and just a little bit of craziness. I'd recommend it to anyone and would love to go back there one day. After Fred and Becks departure, we had 1 day to go til the revival of the Fête Votive. We used it to explore the Camargue area we were in. We cycled along the canals and around beaches and resort towns, visiting Grau du Roi again and paddling in the Med … to sea by foot! We explored L'Espiguette, a beautiful unspoilt beach with nature reserves and sand dunes scattered around its perimeter. All of the sand dunes, grasses and little yellow and black caterpillars reminded me of ... read more

after 3 hours in the sunshine on a sunday morning we were in Aigues Mortes. We'd seen camargue horses alongside the canal and the wind had died down a little. Aigues Mortes instantly impressed us. It's a fortified town, with all the main streets, restaurants, shops etc contained within the walls. Its narrow streets are cobbled and every so often there's a lookout post cut into the wall. I kepot expecting to see knights ride up on horses. We went for a walk once we'd tied up. Outside the walls of the town was a fiarground and a makeshift arena had been built at the rear. Something was going on – how exciting! We walked through the town and saw tables and a stage set up in the square, the tables covered in pink and orange ... read more

It took 5 hours for us to get from Avignon to St Gilles on the canal du Rhone a Sete and we had a lovely trip. The wind was still strong so we kept the roof up but the sun was out and we saw lots of herons and other birds once we'd gone through Beaucaire lock and off onto the Petit Rhone. The Petit Rhone was much smaller than its Papa so we could see more wildlife. It was also sheltered ffrom the wind so we took the roof down. On the way Fred drew up a contract of conditions for dog ownership for Becky to sign. After deleting the more outrageous stipulations and debating the terms a little, she agreed, signed and the deed was done. They were getting a dog. Around half six ... read more
