It's 10.28 on the 14th June. We're now camping in Banff National Park, and so in this next blog I will explain how we got from Winnipeg to here. We got up fairly late in Winnipeg, around 10 am, and headed downstairs to the dining room for our complimentary breakfast. We all had a full English (with a slight Canadian twist - maple bacon etc.) then got ready to head out into Winnipeg itself. Our hotel was a 20 minute bus ride from the city, and it was a nice, warm day with clear blue skies. The city itself is very compact, but has some impressive buildings and large parks - giving it a not unpleasant feel, if not a little dull. We did get a sense, however, from all the people we talked to, that ... read more

It's 12.56 on the 11 June. So currently I'm sitting on the bus just 2 hours out of Winnipeg, on our way to Banff. In the last couple of days we've already travelled 1400 miles, and still have 22 hours of travelling to go today. Sunday was technically our day off. However, it was the farmers market that morning so Sandy needed someone to go with him, bright and early at 7.30, to set up and help out selling the bags of salad we'd prepped the day before and cook the farms homemade burgers. Kate drew the short straw, so by the time the rest of us were up - around 8.30, she was gone. For Rosie, Matt and I, the morning and early afternoon was spent mainly just sitting around and searching for a place ... read more

It's 16.36 8th of June. We're currently 4 hours into the 31 hour bus journey to Winnipeg, but more in that in the next post. So I think I got up to Wednesday night. Thursday day time was much the same as usual, it was a hot, cloudless day and there was a lot of work to be done. We started the day as we had the last few days - cutting the salad greens for an order. There wasn't all that much, so shortly after we were tasked with erecting a trellis in the field to grow tomatoes on. The first job was to salvage 70 1.5+ metre tall metal poles from the scrap pile. Once we had loaded these into the gator, we brought them out to the field and set about setting then ... read more

It's 18.35 on the 4th June (happy birthday Grandma). So just another quick blog to let everyone know what we've been up to. Monday was a pretty average day, we had a lot of seeding to get done so that took first priority. This simply involves filling small cell trays with compost and putting a seed in each. Sounds boring I know, but it's not unlike just sitting around a kitchen table - easy work and sociable too. As well as the potting, we also had a little planting of peppers in the greenhouse to get done, as well washing out 40 odd boxes for the box program the next day. Not really much else happened on Monday, just the usual evening routine, and bed relatively early. Tuesday was a more interesting day. It was the ... read more

It's 18.59 on the 2nd June. Today I'll just give a little update as to what we've been up to Friday, Saturday & Sunday, as nothing much of note has happened between now and my last blog. So, Friday was a usual work day. We got up earlier than usual - about 7.30 - as Sandy had agreed to pay us $11/hour for any hours over 7 a day. I can't exactly remember in what order we did work, but most of the day was spent clearing out greenhouses, planting corn and tomatillos out in the field. Is was another very hot day, and at about 2 we headed to the house's garden where Sandy had barbecued some veal steaks. We sat and ate and chatted about the work we'd been doing and the work still ... read more

It's 17.35 on the 30th of May. So today i write a little about Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week. This blog probably won't be quite as long as the last few, as I'm just writing about work days. So Tuesday. This was our first day of work back at Meadow Sweet, and it was another day for us to prep the boxes that were sent out to the locals. So, in the morning we set about cutting herbs and cleaning the boxes, as well as cutting heads of lettuce to be bagged. Once all the harvesting was done, we headed to the orange Barn to package and box up the produce. This took a surprisingly short amount of time, even though there were 36 boxes to fill, and we were finished by lunch. After ... read more

It's 22.53 on the 26th of May. So I think today I'll write about Saturday, Sunday & Monday. Dad, you didn't like the amount of alcohol consumed in the last few blogs - so you may want to look away now. I probably won't get it all done today, but I hopefully I can get it finished and uploaded by tomorrow night. So Saturday. Since we weren't really asleep until about 3.30-4 the night before, we weren't up until 12 noon on Saturday. Eventually we got up, and Emily kindly cooked us pancakes, bacon and eggs - a pretty good way to kick start the morning. We hadn't really got much planned for the day, only that there was to be a barbecue in the evening. It was, however, Matt's birthday - so we all wished ... read more

It's 19.52 on the 25th May. Today I'll write the first 3 days that I have missed, then I'll do the next 3 tomorrow or the next day - I've got a lot to tell. So Wednesday. We got up and begun the day doing some picking of the salad greens that were ready for harvesting. Matt cut Arugula, Rosie and Kate cut Cutting Celery, and I filled 4 crates full of a variety of red and green lettuce. Once we'd harvested enough, one of the larger greenhouses was practically empty as we'd pulled up near all the lettuce growing in it. Therefore, the next job was the hoe the ground in the greenhouse ready for the next crop to be planted. This took us up to lunch, and once we returned we were ready to ... read more

It's 20.36 on the 19th of May. Probably won't be too much of a long blog today, as if often the case with blogs about the regular working days. Having said that, the first day, Sunday, was a day off for us. We got up nice and late again, about 10, and made some breakfast. It was another hot day - max 23•c and completely cloudless - so we were out by 11 on the lawn and sunbathing. I took a short break to Skype the parents, before Matt, Rosie and I headed up to the Tim Hortons to grab some lunch. We walked up through the fields again, but this time in the noon sun beating at our backs. Luckily, Tim Hortons is only twenty or so minutes away, so before long we had air ... read more

It's 21.35 on the 16th May. I've decided that it would be a good idea to give a brief sentence description of the weather before I go on to talk about each day, as I rarely mention the weather unless it is directly relevant to something else in saying. However I decided this just a minute a go so I don't have any temperatures for this blog. Anyway, for next time. So Thursday. We got up, a little late admittedly, by 9am - and headed out to work. Matt and I started by potting the near endless numbers of Lunchbox peppers in the large greenhouse, while Rosie and Kate finished off clearing out the greenhouse we had begun weeding and composting the afternoon before. Once we had done this, we all headed to another greenhouse to ... read more
