It's 9.08 on 13th July. So now we're drawing towards the end of out time in Victoria, and we will be leaving for the U.S. in just a few days. In this blog I will write about our weekend here with Donna and Bob, and it'll be the the penultimate blog written in Canada. Friday I got up at a reasonable time - 8am maybe, and went for a run. As usual, the last of us were up by 10.30, and we were ready to discuss plans for the day. As we were going to watch a lacrosse game that evening, the girls were happy to spend the day sunbathing while Matt seemed content doing something on his phone. So, I decided to walk the hour or so down to the new mall that had just ... read more

It's 9.38 on the 10th July. We're about halfway through our stay here in Victoria which, as always, has gone so fast. Today I'll write about Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. I got up Tuesday at about 7.20 and went down to the park to do my usual routine of pull-ups, press-ups, squats etc., getting back by 8.30 to write my previous blog. From then until about 10 the others began to wake up and emerge from the bedroom. Everyone made themselves breakfast and we discussed what to do that day. It was still this funny kind of smokey overcast - not quite cloudy but not quite blue skies, so we decided to wait for a properly sunny day before we headed down to the lake. As we'd been into the city the day before it seemed ... read more

It's 9.25 on the 7th of July. There's been a very welcome change of pace here in Victoria, as I'm sure you've noticed from my last blog. We've had a chance to kick back and relax here after the craziness of Toronto and The Rockies. It does mean however, there isn't so much to write about so these blogs will be a little shorter for a while. So Saturday. Donna and Bob had booked us in for the museum at noon, so we spent the morning having breakfast and showering and the like. By noon we were ready and Donna gave us a lift in to the city, dropping us outside the museum which was set back a little from the inner harbour, next to the government buildings. The museum itself was made up of two ... read more

It's 10.47 on the 4th July. I think, after all of the excitement of Beaverfoot and travelling, this will be a shorter blog. I hope so anyway, the last few took me at least an hour and a half to write and another couple of hours to upload all the photos. So we woke up pretty late on Tuesday morning, having had very little sleep the previous 3 nights for whatever reason. It was the 1st of July, which was Canada day, so Donna and Bob had the day off. We emerged from our room at about noon, and had some breakfast. The first thing we were to do that day was to head down to the local supermarket to buy some food for the next few days. So, once everyone was showered and awake, we ... read more

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Vancouver July 4th 2015

It's 10.39 on the 3rd of July. Today, if I get this written and uploaded, I will have finally caught up with my blogs and I will go back to the usual one every 3 days. So, today's blog will be about the last day at Beaverfoot, our day in Vancouver and our arrival in Victoria. We agreed on Sunday morning with Raph that we would work a half day instead of a full day. For some reason he seemed to think we would be very pleased with this even though we were supposed to have the whole day off. Anyway, we had breakfast then got to work. The heat had reached a boiling climax that day, so everyone moved sluggishly around and, really, not a lot of work was done. Rosie, Kate and I headed ... read more

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Golden July 3rd 2015

It's 14.40 on 2nd of July. I had already spent an hour or two writing a pretty long entry about the next three days - Thursday, Friday, Saturday - but unfortunately my phone deleted my notes, so I lost everything. So, I guess all I can do is 'start again at my beginnings/ and never breath a word about my loss' in the words of the Rudyard Kipling poem on my wall at home. I probably won't write in quite as much detail this time around, however. So, Thursday. Thursday was Josh's birthday, so we all wished him a happy birthday in the morning - but it was still a normal working day for everyone as usual. In the morning, Matt, Josh and I begun by moving furniture and scrap wood around the site in the ... read more

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Golden July 1st 2015

It's 18.31 on the 27th June. As in writing this, we are on the second to last day of our stay here at Beaverfoot, and I will write about Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Just a quick note before I start, many of the photos I upload with the Beaverfoot blogs aren't necessarily in order as I've collected some from earlier in the stay from others, so it's all a bit of a jumble! Anyway, Monday. This was our second day off of the week, and we had decided to do the hike from Marian Lake up to High Lake with Rico and the two French girls Selenn and Floriene. Kate had decided the morning before that she would rather stay back at the lodge and catch up with reading and writing. We woke up early, about ... read more

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Golden July 1st 2015

It's 14.44 on the 24th of June. In this blog I will write about our last 2 working days of the week, and then our day off on Sunday. We got up Friday morning at the usual time. As I entered the dining room Rico asked me if I could give him a hand with doing the dump run in Golden that morning. I agreed, as it would be good to get out of the Lodge for a while. So we jumped in the flatbed truck that was already loaded up with a mountain of bin bags and secured with a slightly sketchy looking tarp. We began up the logging road on the way to the highway that took us into Golden and, just before we hit the main road, was stopped by a phone call ... read more

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Golden July 1st 2015

It's 14.10 on 20th June. We have now been at the lodge for 5 days, and in this blog I will write about the first 3 full days we have spent there. Monday night the temperature dropped pretty low, and I had underestimated the amount of clothes I needed to wear in bed, so I was woken up several times by the cold. Weirdly, it was my face primarily that was particularly chilly - which was a novel and fairly unpleasant sensation - I guess because it was the only thing that wasn't wrapped up in my sleeping bag. We didn't need to be up until about 10am however as work didn't start until 11am, which made a nice change from the 7am get up at MSF. I came out to my cabin to a bit ... read more

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Golden June 19th 2015

It's 21.16 on the 17th June. So in this blog I will write about our time staying in Banff, as well as our arrival at Beaverfoot Lodge. We woke up at a reasonable time on Saturday morning, as I guess is usually the case when camping. We didn't have any lilos or roll-matts so we were straight onto the floor from our sleeping bags - consequently we were all a little stiff. In any case, the hot shower and the incredible view more than made up for it. We slowly got ready and headed down to the free bus into the town - getting there by about 11. From there we bought a coffee and s sandwich, and headed to the information office to find out which hike was the best to do. We finally settled ... read more
