It's 22.20 on the 14th of May. Today I'll give a little summary of the last 3 days - up to, but not including today. On Monday we got up for breakfast and to pack. Being severely hungover we didn't feel like doing it the night before, but we were packed with good time to leave the hostel with time to reach the bus terminal. The clouds were heavy and low over the towering buildings in the city centre, and it rained sporadically as we hauled our packs the 20 minutes to Bank St, where our bus left at 11.40, due to arrive at 12.30 in Stouffville - just down the road from Meadow Sweet farm. The bus, more like a comfortable coach, made its way pretty swiftly out of the city, and onto the sprawling ... read more

It's 23.30 on the 10th May. This is our last night in Toronto for about a week and a half, and we've had such a fantastic time here. We got up early on Friday morning, and packed up fairly quickly as we didn't really have much space to unpack at Scales in the first place. We said thanks and goodbye to all of the team there, then drive the 25 minutes or so with Adam to the bus station. There was a feeling that they didn't really buy or story that some friends had arrived in Toronto early and we were going to meet them, but by this point it didn't really matter. The greyhound bus was a local service so fairly basic - no Wifi or power outlets, but the trip only lasted an hour ... read more

It's 11.08 on the 7th of May. I think I left off on Sunday night, leaving Ottawa - something that already feels a world away. We got up earlyish, 6.45, on Monday morning, and Tim gave us a lift into Ottawa to catch the 10.30 bus to Barrie, via Toronto. It was sad to leave The Winchelsea as we had settled in there, but we were also ready to move on. The journey was uneventful, and we made the connection to Barrie (just), and arriving in the city's bus terminal at 5.30. We then waited for someone to come pick us up, though we had no idea who. Half the other people in the bus station were peculiar looking hill billy type people - clearly residents of Barrie and the surrounding area - and half what ... read more

It's 20:31 on the 5th of May. We've arrived at Scales Nature Park, but I'll get into that on tomorrow's blog. First I'll wrap up our stay in Ottawa. So Friday. We had the day off Friday and so we resolved to go into Ottawa - however Tim was giving the German girls a lift to the bus station that morning so we couldn't get a lift in with him. Instead, Laura was driving to a town called Manitick that was kind of half way between the house and the city, so she was to drop us off there and we'd get the bus the rest of the way. However, once Laura had disappeared into the distance and we had stood at the bus stop for about half an hour, we came to realise that the ... read more

It's 23.08 on the 30th April. We're well on our way to bring out here for 2 months out of 5. We've had a pretty standard last few days here at The Winchelsea, so I doubt this entry will be too long. We got up on Tuesday for breakfast and headed straight out into the garden to get to work tidying the the place up. Matt and I weeded the beds while Rosie and Kate undertook the exciting task of sorting wood chips from leaves. We carried on with this until lunch, then continued in much the same way in the afternoon - until around 3.30. Tuesday must have been a particularly unremarkable day as I can't remember much more than this - the last few days have taken such a similar form they begin to ... read more

It's 21.54 on the 27th of April. Time for a brief update of life here at the Winchelsea household. Saturday we woke and breakfasted, then set out almost immediately to start back on the slide of the play structure. It was fairly close to zero degrees when we started at around nine, and this made it near impossible to fiddle around with the 50 something nuts and bolts that were needed to build the rest of the slide. We nearly gave up several times, and had to redo some steps again and again as we kept getting the alignment slightly wrong, but at least by lunch the slide was about s metre longer than it was when we set out. The rest of the afternoon was spent in a similar fashion - building, cursing, giving up ... read more

It's 22.54 on the 24th of April. So we're settling in nicely here in Ottawa, and time is already starting to pass at an alarming rate. We got up Thursday at the usual time and had our breakfast - I even managed to get up for a run beforehand. We headed then back out into the garden to continue with the house, which was, by this point, only half complete after 2 days work, if that. The next big step for us was to construct the A frame and beam for the swings, attach it to the 'fort', then begin putting together the slide on the other side. Kate and I got on with that, while Rosie and Matt continued to clear the garden and then help out with laundry and cleaning in the barn. The ... read more

North America » Canada » Ontario » Ottawa April 23rd 2015

It's 23.01 on the 22nd of April. So, now we're in Ottawa. This won't be a long entry as I'm ready for sleep now. We left the hostel in the rain on Monday, and headed to the bus station in downtown Montreal to catch our 1pm bus - finding a cafe in the station for a coffee and a pastry before the bus was due to depart. The bus journey took pretty much it's scheduled 2 and a half hours, and I didn't see much of the scenery as I was writing my last blog. We arrived at the small Ottawa station and waiting slightly nervously for Tim, Laura Fletcher's husband to arrive and pick us up. Before long we saw the guy we'd picked out in Laura's profile pictures, a tall, well built bald guy ... read more

North America » Canada » Quebec » MontrĂ©al April 20th 2015

It's 13.35 on the 20th April. I realise it's been nearly a week since the last blog - sorry about that. So I'll go over what we've been doing in Montreal over the last week as best I can, and upload so photos too! So I think I left off us waking up Wednesday morning, hungover and feeling a little sorry for ourselves. We spent most of the morning lazing around and eating, then managed to get out of the house to head up to the Olympic park for a little look around. The park was about a 30 minutes walk away from the apartment, and the area had a really Southern European feel in the warm afternoon sun. It was all concrete roads, balconies and wide, tree lined avenues. We sat in a cafe in ... read more

North America » Canada » Quebec » MontrĂ©al April 16th 2015

It's 23.37 on 15th April. What an adventure we've had in the last few days! This is the kind of thing you expect from a 5 month trip! I'll start at the beginning. On Sunday Judie wanted to show us a few more sites around the area, so we all jumped in the car and headed first to the wharf that looked out over a bend in the St-Laurent river, with magnificent views of both banks. Judie told us that once a year there's a canoe race there, but it's always so frozen the competitors push the canoes over the ice most of the way - bar a strip of water at its central point. Apparently they have to time it as well, lest the canoes get mowed down by the huge oceanic liners and freight ... read more
