It's 23.43 on the 20th March. I'm getting pretty tired this evening, so the entry may be fairly concise. We woke up today in good time to catch breakfast, around 9.30, then set about readying ourselves for the day ahead. Around the breakfast table we decided that today we were going to walk the Freedom Trail, which takes us around all the major historical landmarks of Boston. The trail was of course all outside, so we needed to wrap up warm. In actuality it didn't seem quite so cold today as the wind has died down, but still the air was freezing. The trail started in the Boston Common, just outside our hostel and wound its way North through downtown Boston and across the river into the dockyards, where it ended up by the Bunker Hill ... read more

It's 23.05 on Thursday 19th March. Today has been or first full day in Boston. I think pretty much all of our nights were a little disturbed last night, as often they are in a new place. Because of this, I didn't wake properly this morning until 9.55. I attempted to rouse the others but they were having none if it, so I headed down on my own to catch the last 5 minutes of the free breakfast the hostel offers every morning. After filling up on bread and cereal I headed back upstairs to find the others still in bed, but at least awake. For the next few hours we slowly got ready to head out, trained and played a little pool in the common area. Once everyone was showered and suitably layered out we ... read more

It's 22.25 on Wednesday the 18th. Today has been the first day travelling since we have got here. In that sense it is perhaps the first day that we have felt that this trip is more than just a holiday - it has really begun in earnest. We rose at 8 this morning and readied ourselves for moving on, albeit grudgingly, from George's flat. With a last glance at the view we headed down the 40 floors to the lobby, past the porters, and into the courtyard. You could tell instantly that it was markedly colder than it had been previously. Is was not just a cold wind, but the air was cold and the sun no longer held any warmth. From the apartment it was a 12 block walk to Port Authority Bus Terminal which, ... read more

It's 14.56 on Wednesday the 18th of March. Currently I'm sitting on the bus between NYC and Boston. In this blog I'll write about the 16th & 17th, then maybe write up our day today either later tonight or tomorrow morning. So Monday morning we were up latish and got ready on the last full day we had in the apartment. We had arranged the day before to meet George, a friend of ours from Worthing, outside High St. sub station in Brooklyn. The fact that we actually met him there was a minor miracle itself as neither of us had wifi or 3G, there were several exits and we were both 20 minutes later than the arranged meeting time. The 5 of us then wandered into Downtown Brooklyn and sat and chatted in a Starbucks ... read more

It's 20.29 on Sunday the 15th March. I've got 2 days worth of stories and pictures to upload in a single post so it may be a long one, although we haven't crammed these days as full of activities as we have done the previous few days. We rose late, around 10.30, on Saturday morning as the night before the owner of the house had had a loud, drawn out argument with one of the tenants about changing beds in the middle of the night. Once that had finally reached a conclusion we drifted slowly off to sleep to the sounds of a pair of backpackers talking loudly in the yard in mixed French and English. Anyway, we got ready in the morning and, after Matt and I had trained legs we headed out to the ... read more

It's 22.06 on Friday the 13th, and our fifth night in the Pacific Loft Apartments. The last 24 hours has done little to give us any more faith in the flat, but I'll get on to that later. We woke relatively late this morning - at around 9 - and I headed over to the park for a morning skip. It was clear and cold this morning, and remained that was the rest of the day. When I returned I was told by a cowering Rosie that Kate needed help in our bedroom, where she was sitting holding a Margherita cup to the wall. Under it, I was told, was a large centipede type bug that took Matt, Kate and I about 15 minutes to pluck up the courage to actually trap and get rid of. ... read more

It's 20.45 on the 4th night night we have had here in NYC. This post probably won't be quite as long as the last ones as we haven't done quite as many noteworthy things. In the same way, I don't think I will be posting 40 photos like I did with the previous post. Today started as per usual - breakfast, training, shower, then off we went towards Manhattan Bridge. Almost as soon as we'd left the apartment we realised that the clement weather yesterday, combined with a lack of wifi for weather forecasts, had lulled us into a false sense of security in terms of the temperature. In the sun it was still pretty mild, but in the shade and with a strong, biting wind we were soon wishing we'd brought coats instead of jumpers. ... read more

I'm writing at 22.01 on our 3rd night in New York. Have had a fantastic day today exploring Lower Manhattan. I'll start at the beginning. The morning started a lot like yesterday morning. Up at a reasonable time, had some breakfast, did some training and got ready to go out. We left the flat at around 11.30 and headed to Brooklyn Bridge which, we soon discovered, was far more scenic and open air than Manhattan Bridge - where the pathway ran under the bridge alongside the subway track. Across the bridge we picked up a pretzel and found a Starbucks to get the first coffee of the day. Still trying in vain to get Rosie to enjoy coffee... Our next stop was the 9/11 memorial plaza, and we walked down in glorious 15•C sunshine. We stumbled ... read more

I'm writing at 10.13 on the 11th of March. I'm sure I'll stop posting with such frequency as we settle into the trip and I realise just how boring I'm being by relaying every moment of each day in glorious details, but at the moment it seems we do so much each day that if I was to leave recording it for a few days I'd have far too much to write about in one post. So we got up this morning at around 8am, which was about 12 noon with the time delay. I popped up to the local deli to buy some bread, butter and jam so we could have toast in our rusty little kitchen - then Rosie, Matt and I started the 5 month training plan that I'd written. I think it ... read more

North America » United States » New York March 10th 2015

It's 10.22am on the 1st day we have in New York. Yesterday the travelling was long and tiring - but surprisingly hassle free. We were quickly through the immigration without any complications then stopped in a diner just outside the airport to share some fries and discuss the almost incomprehensible instructions to get to the hostel left for us from our hosts. Actually, when it came down to it it was not too complicated after all, plus we managed to swing getting two trains and a bus for $7.50 each. However, by this point it was getting late (around 10 by our body clocks), we'd been up early, and the bags were beginning to feel very very heavy. The entrance to the 'hostel' was a non-descript door in the middle of a residential street with a ... read more
