05/09/2011 - Today was the earliest start of the trip so far, the alarm going off at 5AM to give us enough time to get ourselves ready have breakfast and make our way to the Nice train station. Our high speed TGV train to Paris would was departing at 6:30AM and incredibly, would only take 5 hours to get to Paris, almost 1000km away. We jumped aboard, found our seats and before we left my Dad and I went to get some photos of amazing high speed TGV train. Shortly after we were on our way, the train would take us back past Avignon along the coast before heading straight up towards Paris. It was hard to believe that it took us almost 2 hours to get back to Avignon because there were obviously ... read more

03/09/2012 - We were in our bright green Picasso early this morning, I was behind the wheel as we drove our way through South-East France towards Nice. On the way we decided to briefly stop in Cannes to check it out, both Hannah and I had never been before. We parked the car and headed towards the beautiful beach full of bars, restaurants, but not people, it was dead. The weather wasn’t great so I could understand why it was so quiet outside, and after a short walk along the beach front the heavens opened and we were soaking wet. We rushed back to the car and continued our journey towards Nice as the rain came down. It took about another hour until we arrived in Nice and it was time to drop off ... read more

We’ve been run off our feet over the last few days so today was going to be a little slower paced. Unfortunately that didn’t mean we weren’t on the road, in fact we’d be in the car for almost 3 hours today, our first stop was Saint Tropez. It was a beautiful drive along the coast of the Mediterranean, but it was so slow. Endless winding roads full of tourists in their rental cars. We arrived into Saint Tropez in the early afternoon and began by checking out some of the incredible yachts which were moored in the port. There were hundreds of them, every single one was impressive, they made you feel broke just by looking at them. We explored the streets full of expensive ships, Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton they were all here and ... read more

We woke early and met my parents downstairs for breakfast in the tiny hotel restaurant, we were the only people here. The weather was looking a little threatening today, in fact it had already started raining this morning. After breakfast we fetched our luggage and checked out of the hotel then maneuvered our bright green hire care out of the ridiculous car park the hotel used. Our first stop for today was the magnificent Pont du Gard, an ancient aqua duct built over 2000 years ago, around an hour drive from Nimes. Thankfully, by the time we arrived just before lunch, the weather had dramatically improved. First we decided to have a good look through the museum, Hannah and I skipped it last time we were here and unfortunately we really didn’t miss too much. We ... read more

It was the usual road trip routine this morning, we woke up early got our bags together and checked out of the hotel. My Dad, being self-employed, could never really separate himself from work and with the time difference between Australia and Europe being ideal in the early morning meant he sometimes spent the morning checking and responding to emails. Today he needed a little more time than usual so Hannah and I went to put our bags in the car then go grab some breakfast in the main square of Montpellier. No sooner did we order some breakfast, my parents came to meet us, it was a little frustrating since we had so much to do today and quite a bit of driving time as well. We bought a France Lonely Planet Guide Book while ... read more

Europe » France » Languedoc-Roussillon » Montpellier August 30th 2011

After a good night’s sleep we packed our bags once again and checked out of our unforgettable hotel. We jumped back into our bright green Picasso and began our drive further south across the French countryside towards Montpellier. However before we reached the motorway we briefly stopped at a fantastic lookout point with uninterrupted views of the beautiful medieval city of Carcassonne, a few photos later and we were on our way again. We took a small detour for lunch to a small fisherman’s town called Sete, where we parked the car and had a brief look around. We stopped for a quick bite to eat at a small street café then we followed up a really crappy lunch with some amazing French pastries, in fact I had the best vanilla slice (or millefeuille as they ... read more

It was day one of our road trip across the South of France to take my parents as far as Nice in just over a week. We packed the car and set off early morning just after breakfast. Our first leg in the car was going to be longest, a 3 hour drive further South towards the medieval city of Carcassonne. My parents really had no idea what was in store and as we approached the medieval city it came it to view from the motorway and they were blown away. We drove into town and found our hotel which was conveniently located, directly across the road from the old city, we checked in and headed to our rooms for a quick rest. The hotel was a fantastic little place with cosy yet decorative rooms which ... read more

Europe » France » Aquitaine » Bergerac August 25th 2011

To really experience France and visit as many places as possible in a short amount of time, Hannah and I organised a road trip across South-West France. And since Hannah and I had already been to many parts of the road trip we made sure to include a few places we’d never been. However before we hit the road we were meeting Hannah’s parents at their house in Bergerac for a few relaxing days in the beautiful French countryside. Our Ryanair flight from Stansted arrived into Bergerac midafternoon, we were met by lovely warm weather and Hannah’s dad waiting to pick us up from the airport. For my parents it was their first real experience of France, having only visited briefly while travelling through to Bruges a few weeks ago. We met Hannah’s mum at the ... read more

Europe » Belgium » West Flanders » Bruges August 21st 2011

My parents had made the long trip across the world for an extended holiday in Europe and for our first trip outside of the UK Hannah and I were taking them to Bruges for the day. It was still dark outside when we had to get up and get ready for the drive down to Dover to make our 8AM ferry crossing. We were at Dover port in good time and had a short wait before driving onto the ferry and setting of towards Calais. My parents were excited to be heading over to mainland Europe, they had never been anywhere besides Britain before. As we approached Calais we headed back down to the car and got ourselves ready for the hour and a half drive to Bruges. When we turned on the radio Mum was ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Midlothian » Edinburgh August 6th 2011

When East Coast Trains were offering first class tickets to Edinburgh for £25 each way, Hannah was right on it and booked us a weekend away in the Scottish city. What started off as a cheap weekend away quickly became far more expensive once it was time to book our accommodation. We couldn’t understand why almost every hotel in the city was completely booked and if there were any rooms left they were exceedingly expensive. We soon realised we were heading to Edinburgh during the largest arts festival on the planet, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. And the typical Edinburgh weather was set to make it a cold, rainy and overcast couple of days. 06/08/2011 - On Saturday we got up at the crack of dawn, packed our stuff and made our way to Kings Cross Station ... read more
