The traveler was active; he went strenuously in search of people, of adventure, of experience. The tourist is passive; he expects interesting things to happen to him. He goes "sight-seeing." ~Daniel J. Boorstin April 27, 2009, Monday, Prague to National Park Krkonose. Enough with big cities for a while, we are off to the mountains! The National Park Krkonose (Great Mountain) is our destination. It is the highest mountain range in the republic and is close to the border of Poland. Harrachov Campground is located in a popular ski area in winter and hiking area the rest of the year. It reminds us of Seven Springs PA, very outdoor friendly. After fighting Prague traffic, we were eventually climbing moiuntain roads. The scenery is beautiful.. Our GPD always wants to find the shortest way …but we ... read more

I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel's sake. The great affair is to move. ~Robert Louis Stevenson April 21. This is an organizing day- clean vehicle, shop, dump, collect fresh water and begin a long drive to the Czech Republic. We are now in Cesky Krumlov (CK) and “what might you ask is CK?” as I did. It is Unesco World Heritage Site. The town’s original Gothic fortress was rebuilt as an imposing Renaissance Chateau in the late 16th century. Since the 18th century the town was restored. Everyone here is also trying to catch up after the neglect of the communist era. We found municipal parking for two nights right at the foot of the old town and castle. April 22. The temps overnight got chilly, the thermometer ... read more

April 24, Friday…From Budejovice to a UNESCO Holasovice Village, a colorful community of Baroque style homes in a very remote area, we traveled lots of cow paths!! A long drive to Plzen and we, of course, stop at the INFO CENTER. The gal gave us the name and postal code for a campground, we had not discovered in our readings. We walked around this town and stopped at Pilsner/Arquell(?) the largest brewery in the Czeh Republic. A tour of the brewery is not what we need again. After a snack and a sample of the beer, we maneuvered and eventually found our way to the “BATES Hotel” campground located at 28 Rijna, Plzen. It seemed to have been abandoned a LONG time ago. We decided to find a level area, eat dinner and sleep for ... read more

I think that travel comes from some deep urge to see the world, like the urge that brings up a worm in an Irish bog to see the moon when it is full. ~Lord Dunsany April 18 Vienna. Off we go to Vienna, first a walk to the bus, then onto the metro and into Vienna. St Stephen’s is our first stop, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. We first noticed the windows---rather dull with a hint of pastel color. The original stained glass windows were bombed during WWII. The church is very ornate with lots of gold everywhere. Vienna is a bit overwhelming and requires lots of walking. The sheer number of museums is mind-boggling. The Hapsburg’s wealth was incredible and everywhere there is evidence of it. We visited the Sisi Museum, Imperial Apartments and ... read more

"“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you’ve imagined” . - Thoreau April 15, Wednesday. After an early “get-up” we biked along the Danube from Melk to Aggsbach Market. It was cool going and warm returning. Such a lovely ride in and out of quaint town and stopping for a coffee break here and there. After the morning bike ride, we are now in search of propane. It seems most campers have small tanks, like our bar-b-que tank, and it is difficult to communicate propane from a hose into our holding tank. Will continue to try. We are now in Krems along the Danube, a charming university town. This area is ideal for bikers, hikers, and campers. The campground is right on the Danube with grand scenery. April 16. Thursday. "Adventure is worthwhile."- Amelia Earhart April 12, 2009, Easter Sunday- Eging am See Campground, a family place -Bavaria Kur-Sport Our day began as we drove toward to Passau and found a free camp area just outside town. We parked and continued our walk into town following the bike trail and stopped at the Dome of St. Stephen’s Church noted to be the largest organ in the world---1,774 pipes!! Easter mass was in progress with the bishop presiding and the music was grand---even though we understood nothing. Our next stop wan the Information Center for a good map of the bike trail along the Danube. Back to the free parking and “home” to Eging we enjoyed some salad and wieners. April 13, Monday also a holiday here in Austria, we left Eging and drove to the ... read more

After a rather circuitous flight from Pittsburgh to Charlotte to Frankfurt to Hanover, then the train to Nienburg, it was a delight to see the bright, smiling face of Kerstin (she manages the office for AGR) as she drove us to Leese to get the motor home. Our “Bothan” was stored in a maintenance building leftover from WW II. We held our breath as Bob turned the key and the motor home roared to life. Yeah! Just a few organizational chores and we are on our way to the campground. It has been a long 36 hours, but successful, time to sleep. 4/09/-09 Thursday AM we got busy organizing, testing the systems, filling up the water tank and purchasing a few food items. The bus took us back to Hanover and we toured the town for ... read more
