Asia » China » Shanghai November 9th 2014

One big flight sale and Mr. and Mrs. Lee have found themselves on a last minute trip back in China! We really couldn't be more excited, going to Shanghai together 4 years ago during the World Expo, we spent 5 relentless days at the expo alone before leaving the city. Funnily enough, we didn't see a single thing outside of it so it's almost like we have never actually been here at all! This trip was also going to be a first in that we were going with other people, we know that we are very good at traveling together but have no idea if we play well with others. However, our adventure got off to a bit of a different start then we anticipated when our travel companions had a slight hang up at the ... read more

South America » Argentina » Chubut » Puerto Madryn February 26th 2014

Leaving our beautiful digs in El Calafate, we headed back to the airport to our next destination - Puerto Madryn. Flying into Trelew, we grabbed a shuttle to Puerto Madryn about an hour away. Staying at a hostel this time, we had no real expectations and it ended up being pretty good. Despite the crazy amount of noise at night, mostly from a nearby nightclub and cars that were unnecessarily drag racing literally all night, the hostel was great. One of the best features was that we had access to a nice giant shared kitchen to use. We were excited to go to the grocery store to gather our ingredients and cook every night - something that would be a chore at home! There wasn't a whole lot to do in town other than walk around ... read more

South America » Argentina » Santa Cruz » El Calafate February 21st 2014

From city to jungle to desert to mountains to glaciers, Argentina is amazing. I knew that I had booked a ‘nicer’ hotel in El Calafate but I had no idea how nice- if we could have moved in forever, we would have. When we walked in to our massive room and looked out the window at the amazing view of Lago Argentino, I never wanted to leave! There wasn’t a lot to do in El Calafate but we didn’t care, we were there for Perito Moreno! 5km wide, 60m above sea level, up to 100m below sea level, and 250 km2, this massive ice block is an incredible beast of nature. Perito Moreno is a stable glacier, meaning that it freezes as much as it melts, therefore it is not receding like most glaciers. Being from ... read more

Barry-low-chay, not Bar-low-sh, was the perfect destination for the Valentine’s weekend portion of our pre-wedding honeymoon. I’m not sure if I mentioned that this trip is serving as our honeymoon trip even though our wedding is not until August. The weekend started out a little rough when our flight from Salta was delayed making our connection in Buenos Aires next to impossible to catch, I thought for sure we would be stuck making a back-up plan. Our plane landed in Buenos Aires at the exact time our connecting flight was supposed to take off, we were whisked off the plane onto a bus that took us right to the stairs of our next plane, our boarding passes ripped by an attendant upon the bus as Binnson asked whether our bags were going to make it – ... read more

South America » Argentina » Salta » Salta February 14th 2014

Salta really reminded us of Peru- the houses, buildings, surrounding mountains – there were many similarities. We started to feel our language barrier as we checked in to our hotel... the lady at the front desk didn’t speak any English at all, she took my reservation print out and ushered us upstairs to a room that reminded me of a prison cell. I sat down in the chair in disbelief of this junk room, the shower head protruding over the toilet with a drain in the middle of the floor- hadn’t seen that since a hostel in Malaysia. Maybe we are getting spoiled with our trips in Europe or coming from our resort hotel in Iguazu but there was no part of me that wanted to stay here for 4 nights. South America » Argentina » Misiones » Puerto Iguazú February 9th 2014

Before I tell you how awesome the Iguazu falls are, because they were, I will tell you about our journey to get to them. There was an insane thunderstorm our last night in Buenos Aires and it had not let up by morning time. We checked out of our hotel and the man at the front desk hailed a cab for us and told him where to go. Little did we know, we were entering the cab of the man who quite possibly invented “crazy taxi”. Honking at every car in sight, passing on the wrong side of the road, squishing in between cars to make an extra lane, hitting the mini lakes formed by all the rain with great speed, and best of all – literally covering his eyes with his arm while laughing maniacally ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires February 8th 2014

After a quick 26 hours of flying, we finally arrived in Buenos Aires. Our first impressions of the city from the taxi were not as good as expected. We got to our hotel in Recoleta and both agreed that the city was looking super shady. While looking up a place to go out for dinner, I completely passed out and we decided to call it a night and start our adventures the next day. Our first day in BA did not disappoint. We started close to our place at the Recoleta Cemetery, here there are huge mausoleums and tombs for some of the wealthiest people in Buenos Aires. It was very impressive with giant statues and pillars; it actually looked like a small town filled with marble houses. Afterwards we headed towards Plaza de Mayo down ... read more

Europe » Belgium » Brussels-Capital Region » Brussels July 27th 2013

Last year we made a last minute decision to head to Antwerp for chocolate and waffles as our last stop of our trip, so when we were trying to decide what would be the last stop on this trip we chose to hit up Belgium again! We were a little surprised when we left the Nord station that we had to walk through a red light district and past a couple of abandoned boarded-up buildings but our hotel in the area was still okay. Even though we were leaving back to Canada in only a couple of days, we still needed to find the Laundromat in this hood to have enough clothes to last us until our flights. After getting a few things washed up we headed on a walking tour that our hotel staff had ... read more

Europe » Luxembourg » Luxembourg City July 23rd 2013

An overnight train to Paris, a morning train to Metz, and an afternoon train to Luxembourg had us arriving in Luxembourg City around 1:30pm. We got to our hotel and sat down while waiting to check in when we heard a man yelling outside, next a man Usain Bolt style sprinted past while the older gentleman ran behind him, he had been mugged. Hmmm... Not the best first impression of Luxembourg or the area that we were staying in. We were in desperate need of showers after the extremely sweaty day before in Toulouse followed by a long night and day on trains, so we grabbed a quick kabob and falafel to eat and headed back to the hotel for showers. We got in on a Sunday meaning that the entire city is shut down for ... read more

Europe » France » Midi-Pyrénées » Toulouse July 21st 2013

We arrived in Toulouse in the afternoon and caught the shuttle into the city center which dropped us off at a station about a 5 minute walk away from our hotel. There were a ton of people out at the street cafes and bars on the Friday and the whole inner city had a really nice laid back vibe. Right away, from airport to check in, we noticed how everyone is super friendly and helpful here. After checking in, we walked down to the main train station to book our train out in a couple of days. We originally had planned on staying in Toulouse for two nights and then taking a morning train to Luxembourg but after some group efforts by the SNCF counter, we discovered that this would not be possible. Something about Sunday ... read more
