Our flight from Pisa to Barcelona was delayed so we didn’t end up getting in until really late. We had planned ahead and booked a hotel near the airport for one night, or so we thought. Because it was so late, there was reduced train/tram service which left us waiting up to 40 minutes just to get to the next mode of transportation. We took a train from the airport to the metro to a tram to realize that our hotel was nowhere close to the airport. We did come in on a Saturday night though and there were tons of people out, our tram was packed and people were singing and taking pictures. As we walked to the hotel, we dodged our old friends – the cockroach – scurrying across the sidewalks as the girls ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence July 14th 2013

We left Rome and took the train back North to Florence. Here we stayed at the loveliest bed and breakfast, huge room and bathroom, A/C, decent food, and an amazing host. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone thinking about visiting Florence in the future. She greeted us at the door and pulled out a map to highlight all the things that we may want to see and the best ways to walk to them. After settling in, we went for a walk to the supermarket and picked up some dinner and wine to enjoy back at the B&B. The next day, we headed out on a walking tour that Binnson created through Trip Advisor that included all of our host’s suggestions. We started off at Duomo, this cathedral was super impressive on the outside ... read more

The high speed trains in Italy are really high speed. In just under 3 and a half hours, we had travelled half way across the country at an ear popping 250km/hr. The bed and breakfast we booked in Rome was about a 10 minute walk away from the Colosseum so after we checked in that night, we decided to head out for a walk. It was fun for me to revisit Rome and to actually know some of the sights before we arrived. It was Binnson’s first time to Rome and he was pumped to see the Colosseum and all of the old ruins laying around. We went for a huge walk that night, heading to the Trevi Fountain from the Colosseum and stopping to take pictures along the way. The weather was crazy hot and ... read more

Our train ride to Venice from Milano was only a couple of hours long and when we arrived, we were greeted with a hot shining sun and very humid weather. Sweating buckets in a matter of minutes, we had a problem. Our last hotel in Milan didn’t have wifi and we had booked our bed and breakfast in Venice back in Lyon, along with a lot of other hotels... and we could not remember the name of our hotel, nor could we find any open wifi networks that didn’t require us to have an Italian SIM card to access. So we basically arrived in Venice, without a hotel name or directions of how to get there. Looking at the Venice map, I knew we had booked a place called, something B&B. Thinking maybe it was Dorsoduro ... read more

We left Lyon to head for Italy; lucky for us our train was booked to stop in Geneva and then drive (train?) most of the way through Switzerland. We had originally planned to go to Switzerland but with limited time and money we decided to save it for another time. So this was great – still got to check out all of the beautiful scenery!! At our stop in Geneva, we hopped out of the train with our big packs on and went for a little walk around the train station. We stopped into their Notre Dame Basilica and then took a couple of dorky photos on the streets before our train was ready to depart. Milan was bittersweet. Milano Centrale station was really beautiful; we booked our tickets to Venice in advance and then made ... read more

Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Lyon July 3rd 2013

We got into Lyon around 7pm and took off to find our hotel. We were definitely worried as we were walking down the barren streets, buildings with bars on the windows, totally ghetto. But we found the hotel eventually and inside it was beautiful and super modern. So nice to be out of that crazy small apartment in Paris and into a big room with a big bathroom and a good shower, as well as Binnson’s favourite – breakfast buffet. Lyon is a much smaller city than Paris, and although it was Sunday and most of the stores were closed we still found plenty to walk around and see. We started out in Old Town and walked around the tiny weaving cobble stone streets, passing by cute little cafe’s and bakeries. There were a ton of ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris June 29th 2013

Paris, the city of love... and the smell of pee. No seriously, it smells like urine everywhere. We flew into Amsterdam early on Tuesday morning, the immigration guy thought I was Paris Hilton- wasn’t sure whether to take that as an insult or a compliment, grabbed our bags and hopped on a train to Paris. We decided to buy the travel card and a museum pass which promised to get us into monuments and many museums for free (besides the cost of the pass.....). After figuring out how to find our apartment that we had rented on VRBO, we set off on our first mission. Well, like usual we got lost. Got off on the right transit stop but really could not figure out where we were supposed to be. Wandered up and down the streets ... read more

Europe » Belgium » Antwerp Province » Antwerp August 12th 2012

Our last minute decision to make a quick stop in Belgium was a success! Although we had booked open train tickets to return to Amsterdam from Hamburg as our last trip, we decided that once we hit Amsterdam we would quickly book tickets to Belgium and hop on the first train out. This was all going very smoothly as the next train departed 15 minutes after our arrival; we grabbed a quick bite, bought our tickets, and jumped back onto the train. About 20 minutes into the ride, we started to notice that our train was taking an extra long stop at one of the stations along the way. An announcement came over the speaker rambling something in Dutch and then a lady came through the cabin to alert everyone that a kidnapping had taken place ... read more

Europe » Germany » Hamburg » Hamburg August 9th 2012

Our final stop in Germany was to Hamburg, home of Europe’s largest red light district and second largest port. On our first night there we took the subway to go see Rathaus in Old Town and emerged to.... China time! A festival in the middle of the town hall square full of red lanterns and Asian trinkets. Even though Binnson claims that “It’s always China time!” we happily walked around inside. Along with China time, comes this big dragon statue that appears once every two years in the square that I forced Binnson to get his picture with (see photos). Moving on from there, we headed down the Alsterarkaden which was lined with shops, hotels, big malls, and restaurants along a water front. We had read something about Chile Haus and decided to go find it ... read more

Europe » Germany » Berlin » Berlin August 6th 2012

Berlin is a crazy place, so much to see and do. After checking into our hotel/apartment and flipping through our lonely planet quickly, we decided to go to Alexanderplatz on our first night to see if anything was happening. We arrived to a fun carnival type thing and decided to stay, grab some food and check out a couple of the shows. It started to rain and get windy so we headed back to the train station and within a meter of the door and a crack of thunder, the rain came down hard! As we took the train to the next stop with a bunch of wet people, it looked like we were riding through a car wash, not being able to see anything through the windows. When the train came to a stop, no ... read more
