South America » Peru » Arequipa » Colca Canyon July 12th 2011

Our trek of the Colca Canyon started in Arequipa at the ridiculous hour of 3 am. The bus picked us up from our hostel and we were on our way to Chivay, where we made a quick stop for breakfast. Afterwards we continued on our way to Cruz del Condor to catch the flight of the Andean Condors. These are some really huge birds that soared effortlessly through the canyon. Apparently they only do their "flight" bright and early or late in the day. After checking out the birds for a bit, the bus drove off the road and let me and Binnson out on the side of the highway. Here we met up with a group of 13 other people to continue on for our trek in the Canyon. The Colca Canyon is the 2nd ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Ica July 8th 2011

We left Huacachina on the 6th to head for Arequipa. When we arrived back in Ica to book our bus ticket for that night, the bus had already sold out. So we were going to be stuck in Ica for the rest of the day and most of the next, as it is an overnight bus to Arequipa. So we found a hostel off Tacna that had the water pressure of a leaky faucet and gave me the creeps because I was pretty sure we were the only people staying there... Still pretty sure we were. Our initial plan was to head down to the Plaza de Armas and walk around looking for a hostel but our cabbie informed us that if we don't drop our bags first, we will be robbed. So after dropping our ... read more

We left Lima by bus to head for Ica. Carlos, our trusty taxi driver, picked us up early in the morning to fight through the crazy traffic. Driving here is pretty similar to China, sometimes its best not to watch. We were almost late so Carlos sprung out of his cab and started to ask people in Spanish which gate we needed to be at, we raced over there and were on our way! Ica was only a four hour bus ride away, we passed through many towns that I can’t say I saw recommended to stop at by the Lonely Planet.... once we arrived at Ica, we grabbed a taxi to Huacachina. We knew Huacachina was going to be quite different from Lima, population of 200 vs. ~9 million. I think it’s safe to guess ... read more

South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Lima July 3rd 2011

Today was all about being in the right place at the right time. This morning we headed back to Parque Kennedy area to find some breakfast. On our way, the catholic church was just letting out and gathering outside to start a procession. We hung out and observed as the priest hopped on a truck covered in flowers that drove the streets around the park with a ton of people walking around it. We heard someone say that it doesn't happen very often, so we were happy to catch a glimpse of it. After breakfast, we grabbed a taxi to Central Lima. The city center was different than Miraflores and was jam packed with people. The Plaza de Armas was beautiful surrounded by many old buildings including the Government Palace, Lima Cathedral, and the Archbishop's Palace. ... read more

South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Miraflores July 2nd 2011

We arrived at Lima, Peru from Toronto very early this morning. There were a few storms along the way, so our flight was a bit longer than estimated but overall it was good. We watched kind of nervously through our little window as we flew through some crazy lightening storms! Scary but pretty :-) By the time we got through customs and picked up our bags, it was about 2am. So we set up camp under some escalator in the airport and slept there until the sun came up. There was really no way that we going to hop in a cab at 2am in a city that we have never been to, with no place to go, so it seemed like the smartest idea. There were a few other families doing the same so it ... read more

Since we have returned to China we have been keeping very busy. After a couple of days of relaxing and doing nothing back in Shenzhen we decided to check out another touristy thing. Splendid China and the China Folk Center were next on the list. Splendid China was just like Window of the World only it pertained only to significant places in China. We spent a couple of hours checking out most of the models before moving onto the Folk Center. The Folk Center contained traditional style dwellings from different villages in China and gave some insight into how people lived in different conditions. This place was kind of disappointing as most of the attractions inside had closed for the day already. At the end of the day we were lucky to catch two shows with ... read more

We boarded our bus to Penang in the evening. The bus wasn’t full so after crossing the border back into Malaysia we decided to switch seats. Luckily for us, this was the best decision we could have made. We met this really friendly lady who lived in Penang and another younger girl who is also a resident of Penang. After questioning us a bunch about our trip, they really wanted to help us out. The younger girl called up a friend of hers and got us the name of a highly recommended guesthouse while the other woman stated that she would give us a ride to the closest bus station as soon as we got off. She told us there would be tons of bad men trying to screw us over for our money in their ... read more

The Malaysia/Singapore border crossing station is huge and beautiful! It was almost like walking through two brand new airports, their efficiency was incredible with tons of que’s- the wait was nothing. Comparatively- the China/Vietnam station where you cram into a tiny hot sweaty room, throw your passports into a stack of other passports and then crowd around a window for an hour uncomfortably with a bunch of other people waiting to hear your name so you can get your passport back and cross the border. First impressions of Singapore were that it was the least Asian city of all of Asia. Everything is in English, everyone speaks English, and the only thing Asian about it is that the population is 75% Chinese. We hopped off the bus in the blistering heat and grabbed a cab to ... read more

From Ao Nang we crammed into a minivan full of people to Hat Yai and a few hours later we were off loaded to wait for our bus to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. We had a couple hours to spare so we walked down the street from the bus station, went to a mall, and then grabbed some groceries. By groceries, I mean the usual: pocky, chips, and some ultra healthy chocolate oat milk and corn milk for an ounce of nutrients. Bus trip days are always the worst for our diet, the further the distance - the worse it gets! We always buy bread and peanut butter for a quick sandwich and a ton of water but never drink it because we might need to go pee at the nasty bus stations, systematic dehydration starts the ... read more

It was time to leave Phi Phi for Ao Nang. We packed our stuff and headed for the boat which took us to Krabi Port. We took a bus into Krabi town which dropped us off at some random guest house and we were off to find a way to Ao Nang. We were about to head to the main bus station, which was about a 7 km walk, when some random Aussie woman on a scooter informed us of where we needed to go to catch a ride to Ao Nang. We automatically trusted her because she didn’t seem local. The cheapest and most efficient way of getting to Ao Nang from where we were was to take a Songthaew(a pick-up truck with benches on either side of the box) for 50 Baht each. Sounded ... read more
