Sorry for the delay but our hotel in Berlin did not have free wifi so I have had to wait a while to post anything. We got settled in to Prague later than expected due to the train delay in Budapest but ended up with our own private car in first class so that made up for it. When we bought our train passes in Amsterdam we opted for the first class option as it was only a few euros extra and so far it has been really good. That night after we changed one funny money into another (HUF’s to Kc’s) we went out and got some dinner at a restaurant close by and then headed home to watch some of the Olympics. The next day started off wandering the old town, checking out the ... read more

We pulled into Budapest’s beautiful Keleti train station shortly after noon on Friday and were engulfed into a killer heat wave. Usually when we go backpacking, we show up to a city without a place to stay, walk around the hostels and find the best deal but on this trip (high tourist season in Europe) so far, we have been booking all of our hotels a couple of days in advance through expedia. Deciding to try something different, we booked an “apartment suite” with a kitchenette at a hostel in the Corvin area through Booking.com so that we could have the option of cooking food instead of always eating out. When we got to our room in the hostel it was clear that this place hadn’t been cleaned for perhaps the entire summer. The place smelled ... read more

Greeted by a giant "Welcome to Slovakia" sign at the train station in Bratislava gave me high hopes that we were going to have just as much fun in this city as we have had in all the rest. Fourteen seconds later we were greeted by a bunch of people wondering if we were looking for hostels, similar to previous trips that we have taken; 17 seconds later we went outside to see two chicks in a crazy WWF wrestling match. Okay... not quite like the countries we just left but there is still hope! After buying our transit passes and then figuring out that no one wanted to help us find where we were going as Binnson got sent in every direction twice at the train station, we finally settled for a camera phone picture ... read more

Europe » Austria » Vienna » Vienna July 25th 2012

I love Austria! I can basically sum up our Austrian experience as: palace, apple streusel, film festival, palace, Wiener schnitzel, opera, palace, church, fortress, sound of music, Mozart, palace, church, chocolate cake. Repeat. We took the train from Munich to Vienna and arrived sometime in the early afternoon. Our hotel was nicely located about a 10 minute walk from the West Wien station (main centralish station), so it was quick to get to and check in. The weather was beautiful and it wasn’t long before we were learning a new city map and transit system to go find things to check out. Well good god, we got off at the Museum quarter and I almost died. This city is so damn gorgeous. There is an unreal amount of beautiful architecture, stunning statues, etc. We started with ... read more

Our last day in Amsterdam was spent mostly at the Heineken experience. After a not so quick all you can eat ribs breakfast for Binnson, we headed there on the tram. For not having high expectations, the Heineken experience was actually a lot of fun! It’s based in a former brewery and has lots of fun things to do while learning about the history of Heineken, the brewing process, bottling and more. There was a ride, a swanky little bar, and a DJ game where Binnson took a spin. They also give you some free beer and we got free sunglasses. Later we stopped at the iamsterdam sign so we could get a quick picture before grabbing our bags and going to the train station for our night train to Munich. The train sleeper cars are ... read more

We arrived in Amsterdam early on Sunday morning. Our google map walking directions lead us to believe that our hotel was only about a half hour walk from Amsterdam Centraal Station so we hoped that we would be able to check in early or drop our bags and come back to check in later. After getting lost about 10 times, 2 hours later, we arrived at our hotel completely spent from lugging around our big backpacks on the less than 3 hours of sleep that we had got on the plane. Our hotel is in a cute old canal house but with that comes classic old steep narrow staircases, and of course our hotel room was on the top floor! So after several flights of stairs up to our room I was more than happy to ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca » Taquile Island August 1st 2011

After a night bus from Cusco, we arrived in Puno very early in the morning around 4:30am. We hung out at the bus station for about 15 minutes, just enough time to catch a tout offering a tour of the floating islands and a "friend" who has a hostel. We hopped in a cab and were off to the hostel. After about an hour nap, we were up and ready to head to the floating island tour! We headed down to the docks at Lake Titicaca - the largest lake in South America and at 3800m altitude, the highest commercially navigable lake in the world. Hopped on a boat and off we went to Uros Islands. The Uros Islands are a bunch of man made islands constructed of reeds. Everything on the islands were constructed of ... read more

We actually arrived in Cusco on July 16th and found a hostel that was pretty close to the Plaza. The altitude here is 3300m so we decided to rest a few days before starting our Machu Picchu adventure. Cheryl was pretty much out of commission for our entire stay in Cusco. It could have been the altitude pills or the altitude itself that was bothering her. What really got her was the combo of the altitude pills and Pepto. We didn’t know until it was too late that those two are not supposed to be combined and Cheryl became very sick. After a couple of days passed by, we were finally able to explore the town and booked a Machu Picchu trek as well as a city tour. We decided to go with the Inka Jungle ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu July 24th 2011

We decided to do the four day Inca Jungle Trek to get to Machu Picchu. Day 1: We were picked up at our hotel and transported to Abra de Malaga Pass (4400 m.a.s.l). Here we hopped on some ridiculously dodgy bicycles and went cascading down a super curvy mountain side on the highway. Dodging vehicles, debris, and other cyclists, we made our way to the end a couple of hours later into the subtropical jungle region. From there, we hopped back on the bus and went to a small town called Santa Maria. There was really nothing to do there (pop. 200) so we killed time watching some of the local kids play soccer until dinner. Day 2: We got up bright and early for breakfast before heading out on our hike. From Santa Maria we ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Arequipa July 15th 2011

Arequipa is the place to get stranded at when your hostel manager screws up your reservation for your bus out of the city. It's definitely the best place we've stopped at in Peru so far. Great night life, great pastries, great prices, great gringos, great views, great everything. Of course, there are still sketch areas and people, but every city has those. As soon as we were dropped off at the bus station in Arequipa from Ica, we found a nice man offering us maps and information about the city. He even offered us a free ride to the Plaza and suggested a hostel that had everything we needed at a reasonable price. It turned out that he was the manager of the hostel he brought us to-- shocking. The place included breakfast, wi-fi, hot showers, ... read more
