Yay! Andrew and Erika came today!!! Their flight was due in at 7:30 and using our experience as a guide, we thought they would take about 2 hours to clear passport control and gather luggage and arrive at the hotel. Imagine our surprise when Erika texted at 8:10, said they had found the man who was sent to pick them up and they were on their way. Yikes! We’d better move! We were downstairs by 8:55 and they arrived at just about 9:00. They were a little tired but their goal was to stay up for as much of the day as possible to jumpstart that European schedule. Their room wasn’t ready yet, so we took their luggage up to our room (they and two suitcases fit in the 4-person elevator—I should have taken a picture!) ... read more

Mark got some frustrating work news yesterday evening (#$*!* Government) and that distracted him, to the point that he was up from 1 to 3 working, including two phone calls to the US using Hotel David’s free call service. I am happy to report that I slept through all of this (didn’t even find out about it officially until the morning) yet despite all of that, we were up before 7 to get packed, go do a couple of last minute things in Florence and then catch the train to Rome. We were showered and packed by 8 and went up for breakfast. The Hotel David has a very nice continental breakfast with both a dining room inside and a covered terrace outside. We have opted for the terrace every morning as we did today. Mark ... read more

So after yesterday’s somewhat debacle, today we took a tour. I know, I know. But it’s a different kind of tour—trust me! Nearly 10 years ago, my mom turned us onto the Food Tour of Greenwich Village in New York which was a blast. It is amazing how much history and culture you can learn about a place by its food. Before we left the states, I found a Florence for Foodies tour and signed us up for that. We heard from the guide who said, “Please confirm by the end of January.” I didn’t confirm and sort of thought, “Oh well. We’ll just be on our own,” but a couple of weeks ago, I got an email from them saying, “Please confirm if you plan to attend,” and I thought what the heck. We got ... read more

Got up today ready to roll. We had an all day tour today—in the morning to the Acadamia where the David (the REAL David) is located and in the afternoon to the Uffizi Gallery, the collection of the Medici and Hapsburg families that is called the premier collection of Italian Renaissance art. Just so you’ll understand the tone of today’s blog, here’s what we learned: Beth and Mark should NOT, emphasize NOT, take big company commercial organized tours. Translation: any tour which accommodates more that 16 to 20 people is not for us. The reason I had booked this all day tour was because I read online that you need advanced tickets to get into the Academia and the Uffizi. When I Googled that, this came up and I couldn’t see another way to ... read more

I think the two naps yesterday wreaked a bit of havoc with my ability to sleep last night. It took me a long time to fall asleep but I stayed asleep when I did. At one point I heard this high pitched squeal/snort sort of sound and I thought, “What in the world is that?” Then I heard the dogs barking and I remember Simonetta saying that the dogs usually only bark at the deer and the wild boar. I ain’t no country girl but I was pretty ding-dang sure that t’weren’t no deer. A little part of me said, “Go look!” but the wiser part of me said, “Stay put.” For once I listened to the wiser part of me. Today dawned sunny and beautiful, a little warmer than we had experienced so far. We ... read more

Mark got up this morning, looked out the window and said, “It looks like the picture on the Contadina tomato paste can.” True that! Lovely! We had joked with Paola and Simonetta last night about “ish” Breakfast, they said, was at 8:30 “ish.” We took the “ish” a little too literally and didn’t wander downstairs until after nine. We apologized and they said, “You’re on holiday. No worries for you.” Breakfast in Italy, Simonetta said, is always sweet. Today’s breakfast was bread and homemade jams (apricot, quince, plum and fig) and a lovely tart with a peach jam in it. It was the perfect start to a lovely day. It turns out that the sisters do one-day lessons as well as lessons for people who are staying at the farm. There was supposed to be another ... read more

Impressions di Roma, Day 2: · Good businesses to own would be gelato shops, Smart Car dealerships and brake manufacturing businesses. I cannot imagine how many sets of brakes a Roman driver goes through in a year · Bad business to own would be street sign makers Woke up with a bit of a scare this morning. When I took my phone out of airplane mode. I had a voice mail. It was the Pristine Sistine tour company saying the guide had left because we didn’t show up for our tour and to call them asap. I swear, I thought that tour was booked for July 2, NOT June 26. I checked my paperwork and sure enough, it was June 26. I called the number she left and got a message that said their office was ... read more

We left Williamsburg at about 1:00 in the afternoon. Had to stop of Chick-fil-A, of course. No unsweetened iced tea for three weeks—and we get back on a Sunday when they’re CLOSED!!! Things to talk to God about when I get to heaven. But I digress. Trip to Glen Allen was uneventful, loaded our three suitcases (two roll-on bags and one larger bag mostly full of toiletries and sunscreen), one carry-on and two briefcases in the back of DiL Erika’s jeep and she whisked us to the airport. For a girl who didn’t know Richmond 1½ years ago, she drives like a pro now! Got checked in with no issues, consolidated our five carry-on items down to four (US Air is strict about such things) and then looked for lunch. Decided that Vito’s was appropriate. Not ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona » Barcelona April 7th 2014

About two weeks ago, our niece got married. At the end of the reception as we were saying our goodbyes, I hugged my nephew Wil and said, “I’ll see you in Barcelona!” He said, “See you in Barcelona! How freakin’ cool is that?” So cool! Again, thank you Mom! We were up and at ‘em early today. Alarm went off at 5, which meant up, shower, dress, finish packing. We had done most of the packing the night before so not too big a deal. The hotel desk clerk said we needed to be at the airport two hours ahead of time. Our flight to Barcelona was at 9:55 so we ordered a car to pick us up at 7. We had breakfast at 6:30 (really, this is vacation?!?) and met the driver right on time ... read more

The last weather report: some patches of blue sky. Did it really wait until we were packed for us to get blue sky? But then I remembered that we had had blue sky two days ago. We saw a t-shirt in one of the shops that said, "It only rained twice the week I was in Ireland: first for three days, then for four." Mark got a t-shirt that says, "The Four Season in Ireland" and it has 4 squares on it. In each square there is a sheep under an umbrella with various amounts of wind and rain evidenced by the state of the umbrella. In all frames it is raining. Pretty much sums it up! We had breakfast at the hotel and then got on the shuttle to Dublin Airport. I heard them telling ... read more
