Travel day! Mark looked out the window and said, “Very overcast, evidence of rain on the street.” Well, not like we’re not used to that! We got ourselves packed up, put on clean clothes (the laundry did come back), ate breakfast and were on the road by 8:40. We were shooting for 8:30 so for us, we were early! We took the left turn again but at the first roundabout we saw a sign for Dublin, back the way we came. So we circled around and headed into the city of Limerick which wasn’t too bad. We were clear of the city by about 9:10 and onto the N 52, a National (rural) Road. The speed limit was 100K and we should have been in Dublin in about 2 hours. But due to rain (which was ... read more

Woke up this morning and Mark looked out the window. “You’re not going to believe this but there’s blue sky out there.” He was right, I didn’t believe it but it was true! Blue sky! Today’s destination: the Cliffs of Moher. Almost every traveler we had talked to along the way said this was a 4-star site and both guide books we have relied on heavily (Rick Steves and the Frommer’s Ireland from $90 a Day) said it is not to be missed. Mark was really whipped after the Dingle driving yesterday and we had looked at booking a tour for the Cliffs but he woke up full of energy this morning and said he’d like to drive. My first waking thought was that I hadn’t seen the ticket for the parking garage since we checked ... read more

Last night after I finished blogging, I was reading the Rick Steves Guide and found an archeology tour of the Dingle Peninsula that sounded wonderful. I brought the guide book down first thing this morning and Geraldine called and booked the tour for us. We had a quick breakfast and were on the road to Dingle by 9:00. There are 5 peninsulas on the west coast of Ireland; the two most famous are the Dingle Peninsula and the one whose coastal road is known as the Ring of Kerry. The Ring of Kerry is the most famous of the five but, we had read and been told by some locals, if you only have time to do one, do Dingle. So off to Dingle we went. The weather was dreary (oh, Mark looked out the window ... read more

We were promised wi-fi internet in this hotel but my computer does not even note that there is a wireless connection available. At the last hotel, we had not been promised wi-fi but turns out they had it and we could get a weak signal. Here, nothing. But they do have a computer in the lounge for guests to use so I checked the weather forecast last night. Gloomy. As usual, we woke up this morning and Mark looked out the window. “It’s overcast and raining.” At least our hearts will never give out from the shock. We slept in a bit today as we had decided to stick pretty close to the local area and explore the National Park. We went down to breakfast at about 9:15. We were greeted warmly by the waitress and ... read more

Got up early this morning to get a good start to Kinsale, a little fishing village in County Cork that Rick Steves highly recommends. Mark looked out the window and said, “it’s overcast and it has been raining. Not raining now.” Well, that was an improvement! After we ate, showered and packed, Mark went to get the car while I checked out. Yvonne stood and chatted with me while we waited for Mark to bring the car around so we could load up and return the parking pass to her. I told her how much we had enjoyed her hotel and how warm the Irish people are. She said, “I’m glad you’ve met the nice ones.” I also told her that Ireland reminded me of what England was like 20 years ago with the green grocers ... read more

Happy Fourth of July! On Good Morning Ireland this morning (Ireland’s equivalent to Good Morning America, we think) they had the owner of a Dublin Restaurant called Captain America cook some “traditional” American food. He made hamburgers (okay) topped with grilled pineapple and thousand island dressing (???) I guess it’s a matter of interpretation. We both slept well last night. Mark was beat and we had “a bit of a lie in” as they would say over here. We got up about 8:00. Mark looked out the window and said, “It’s raining!” Well okay then! We fixed our continental breakfast and got ready to get to it. When we opened the door to our room, Yvonne had taped a note to our door: “Mark and Beth, please don’t forget to come get the parking pass before ... read more

First thing I said this morning: I feel so much better! Ain’t drugs—and shots—grand? Thank you Dr. Fergus Brady and your sparkling eyes! Today we’re off to Kilkenny! Mark looked out the window this morning (as is his Irish habit, it seems) and said, “Oh, look, it’s raining!” like it was a surprise. What he didn't say is it wasn't just raining, it was POURING down rain. I mean POURING!!! We got packed up, went down for breakfast and checked out of the hotel. The front desk called us a taxi which took about 10 minutes to arrive. It continued to pour rain. The taxi arrived and the driver took one look at me and said, “Not to worry, missus, it’s just a little rain.” He asked us where we were from and how long we ... read more

We slept well last night. I think we were both out by 9:30. I woke up this morning feeling miserable. While Mark was in the shower, I called the front desk and said I needed to see a doctor. Note to self: when calling the front desk of a hotel telling them you need to see a doctor, say, “It’s NOT an emergency but I need to see a doctor.” They called back in a few minutes and said the doctor couldn’t be here for about a half an hour. At that point I said it wasn’t an emergency and there was a disappointed pause. (Guess I ruined the good story for the pub that night!) He said, “I will ring you back,” which he did in short order. He said he was really sorry ... read more

Our flights were on time and fairly comfortable. I slept for about 4 hours and Mark slept for about 2--miracle, that, as he usually does no more than nod a time or two on a plane. We arrived at about 9 a.m. The weather was cool and showery, kind of what we had read in the forecast. Our bags were 3 of the last off the plane but we had them in hand and were in the cab to the hotel by 10:15. The cabbie was very friendly and asked us lots of questions about what we would be doing while in Ireland. When we told him we were renting a car and traveling around the country side, he said, "Oh, you'll have earned the Victoria cross by the time you get back for that!" We ... read more

Off to Ireland! I woke up at 4:00 a.m. with a wicked burning in one spot in my throat. I drank some water, convinced myself it was dehydration and went back to sleep. When I woke up at 7, it was all over. So it looks like I am off to Ireland with a cold. I think it has something to do with 4 1/2 hours of sleep Friday night and 4 hours Saturday night. Ain't graduate school grand? I had a bunch of errands to run today to finish getting ready and then had to finish packing. The weather forecast doesn't look too promising, at least for the first few days, so we are both packing layers. I pulled out my raincoat which includes a substantial liner and Mark said, "You're taking your heavy coat?" ... read more
