On the 4th of April 2010, I will fly to Latin America for the start of my big adventure.

The plan is to spend 3 months in Ecuador to follow Spanish courses, to experience life in the Amazon jungle and to discover this colorful country. Next, I will travel through Colombia and Bolivia with a Belgian travel companion. Afterwards, I backpack solo without a predefined itinerary. Destiny will decide where the future brings me. My return flight is leaving from Buenos Aires, date still to be defined.

I will try to get into the habit of posting some messages and pictures on this site regularly, but I am not the most disciplined person when it concerns administration ;-) So don't be disappointed if there is no news from my side for several days or weeks.

South America » Ecuador January 25th 2011

Back in Ecuador, but still plenty of things to do ! This is my opportunity to do at least some of those things, because my to-do list in this country remains very long. Also the opportunity to take some additional Spanish classes because Quito has some very good and inexpensive schools. Back to Baños to do canyoning. The first time and probably also the last time because I did not really feel like it was worth the money. Driving a car again after 8 months of being driven around by taxi and bus drivers felt good, although I will probably change my mind on this quickly when I will need to get used again to the Belgian traffic jams. I also went to the "Baños de Cajon" to clean my body, because my stomach was in ... read more

South America » Peru November 30th 2010

For the second time in Peru ! I had already been here 2 years ago for my regular holidays, but this time I experienced the country and especially the people very differently. The idea was to visit few of the locations I had enjoyed a lot again but mainly to visit the parts of the country I did not know. I skipped the jungle because I had recently spent a lot of time in the jungle of Bolivia and was up for something else. My itinerary was also a little bit random due to the circumstances. The country is great, but I enjoyed it sometimes less because of the way tourism is exploited by the locals. The north of Peru does not have a very good reputation with regard to safety. When I was there, I ... read more

South America » Bolivia October 6th 2010

After the touristy parts of Bolivia, I visited some of the more remote parts in the east of the country. Not so easy, considering that transportation facilities are often very limited. My first stop Samaipata, a nice little town with the main attraction being the gateway to the national park Amboró. The night bus from Sucre to Samaipata was terrible. After a long ride on a very bad road, the bus dropped us off at 5AM next to the road in no man's land. Fortunately I had already gotten used to taking night buses and sleeping in those terrible conditions was not a problem anymore. In Samaipata I took the opportunity to take the San Pedro powder that I had bought earlier in La Paz, i.e. a cactus that produces hallucinations. Together with a friend, we ... read more

South America » Bolivia September 16th 2010

I arrived in Bolivia in the middle of the night. Since I was flying in in La Paz (4000m) from Bogota, I did not suffer too much from the effects of the altitude. I usually use the first days in a new country to arrange few things, such as sending a DVD back home with my pictures, buying a local SIM-card and getting to know the local currency and the price level. I had been told that arriving in Bolivia is like going back in time, but the center of La Paz seemed rather modern. Finding good accommodation in La Paz ended up being a difficult exercise. The first 2 nights we stayed at the "Wild Rovers backpacker's hostel". What a mistake ! You could hear the music from the bar until 2.30am in many of ... read more

South America » Colombia August 23rd 2010

First city in the Caribbean was Cartagena. I had heard a lot of great things about Cartagena and the city was indeed beautiful. The historic center next to the sea made it different from other cities I had visited so far ! Temperatures and humidity were very high. Fortunately our hostel had air conditioning. From there, we went to Isla de Rosario and Playa Blanca. We did this with an organized trip where a boat brought us to these places, but would have been better off doing this on ourselves. In the morning the weather was very bad and the boat was first not going to leave. After 1 hour waiting in a packed boat, the weather improved and we did eventually leave. Isla de Rosario was definitely not worth it, but Playa Blanca was beautiful. ... read more

Based on the information we had received from other travelers, we decided to go to the small town Salento to discover the coffee region. Many people go to Manizales, but I usually prefer smaller towns rather than big cities. We stayed in an eco lodge, which was basically just a hostel outside of the town. The owner of the hostel also owned a coffee farm close by, where we received all the explanations about the production process. We also went to the valley Cocora in the National park Los Nevados. A day trip, that ended up to be a little bit more difficult than we were expecting. The hike of 5 km seemed much longer ! Fortunately, we could use the boots provided by the hostal to step through the muddy paths. From there we went ... read more

South America » Colombia July 23rd 2010

Before going to the south of Colombia, I spent few days in Villa de Leyva. The perfect place to take some rest and to do absolutely nothing ! A very beautiful and small town, nevertheless with good facilities. Good shops, hostels and restaurants ! Three weeks for the South of Colombia seemed a long time at first, but ended up to be barely enough. I started in Cali, the city of the salsa and nightlife. Because of bad timing, I found myself in the city in the beginning of the week and on a legal holiday. Everything was closed and the city was dead. Beautiful but nothing special compared to the other cities I had seen so far in Ecuador. Next, I went to Bogota to pick up a friend, who will be me travel companion ... read more

South America » Ecuador July 2nd 2010

I needed the last few weeks in Ecuador to further improve my Spanish skills and to make the excursions in and around Quito that I had not done so far. Additionally, I still wanted to go hiking in the Quilitoa region, one of the highlights of Ecuador ! In Quito, I went to the Museo de la Ciudad, the Panecillo, the Teleférico, the Basílica. I enjoyed the Basílica the most, because the view over the city was very beautiful. Not needed to go up to the Teleférico to see the city from the sky ! At the Teleférico, I took the opportunity to inhale oxygen (I think this used to be a hype in Asia). It felt a little bit like being tipsy in the beginning, but without the unpleasant side effects. The region around Quito ... read more

In between my Spanish courses, I had foreseen one week for traveling. I used this time to go to Canoa, Cuenca, Loja & Vilcabamba. Quite an full schedule ! In total, I have spent 48h in the bus in one week. My trip to Canoa was the second time I went to the coast in Ecuador, very different from Atacames. Canoa is a small fishers village that is rather difficult to reach. In order to get there from Quito, you need to take a bus, a boat and again a bus. The result is a very nice large beach, with only very few people and with almost no pollution. There are a lot of bars next to the beach and nightlife is more friendly than in many other places in Ecuador. In Canoa, you can still ... read more

My stay in the Amazon was not exactly what I was expecting. Therefore, I soon decided to reduce the length of my stay from 4 to 2 weeks. Instead, would take one additional week of Spanish classes in Quito and I would go traveling 1 week in Ecuador. The reason I was disappointed about my experience in the Amazon was that there were a lot of other travelers and that there was only very limited contact with the indigenous people. I did not get a lot of opportunities to get to know the Shuar culture nor to practice my Spanish. In the second week we spent a night deep in the jungle, only surrounded by animal sounds. When we came back to the community, we had to hold on for a while because there was a ... read more
