I awoke in the middle of the night to a large crashing sound. It lasted nearly five minutes. It was, strangely, thunder. This was odd for two very important reasons. 1) Zambia (as with most parts of Sub-Saharan Africa) has two distinct seasons: Rainy season, and dry season. In the rainy season it rains all the time. In the dry season it does not rain. At all. 2) It is currently dry season. And yet...in the middle of the night, rain cascaded down. Unprecedented, all the Mzungus (white people) say. This has not happened in the written history of Zambia. Then again, written history of Zambia doesn't go very far back. The Zambians all shrug their shoulders. Anyone can make it rain, they tell me, if they know how, so if someone does the right dance, ... read more

Lunch break from the clinic right now, using free internet at one of the fancy hotels in town. They simply give us the code, assuming we're guests because we're white, ridiculous. I'm mainly just writing this in hopes I can get some pics up from Livingstone. I tried for HOURS yesterday and nothing got uploaded. So...day two...internet fun. Nothing new or interesting to say at the moment, I went to dinner at the house of a BBC reporter last night which was kind of cool. You meet some of the most interesting people here. Today I'm wearing a dress from one of the second hand markets in town, fun to get super cheap new clothes (imported direct from England). Off to try uploading pics. Cross your fingers...you'll know if it works because you'll see pictures! Andrea ... read more

Vacationing in Africa is an odd concept. The idea of a vacation is in itself a wealthy western concept. Only people with money can take vacations, much less to remote spots with no relatives to be found. Vacationing in Africa takes that theme one step farther. Only the super rich vacation, and there is no shortagem of reminders that the poor are not vacationing. Livingstone is necessarily a wealthy African city due to the tourist business. Instead of working as a door man for a single wealthy white person, a man can work as a doorman for any number of prestigious hotels where colonialism is alive and well. There is no need for any wealthy white visitor to observe a single native outside of his required position as driver, waiter, maid or otherwise. One can visit ... read more

Hi all, Writing now from the clinic, where internet is a bit of a drama-filled subject. Corpmed (the larger private facility which TTAF is within) has internet in most of the rooms, however, they refuse to connect the TTAF computers because they feel TTAF (as a nonprofit) is sucking away the resources of Corpmed. Corpmed has an odd relationship with TTAF in that they let TTAF operate out of their offices and use most of their equipment yet always with a strange reluctance. This has been an odd week for me in that I learned a lot of information that I would rather not know about people that I’m attempting to respect. A Zambian who had lived in the US described America to me as a “land of laws” to which I had to agree. America ... read more

Yup...today is a super lazy day so my roommate Erin and I are sitting outside using internet and reading. I had a lot of trouble getting the pictures up yesterday but it sounds like you guys can actually seem them...which is good...I didn't think they actually worked...I'll try to include a picture of Erin in this one so you guys can get some idea of who I hang out with. Yesterday after work we cooked dinner and slowly made our way to a house warming party for Michael who just moved out of Tej's house and into a group house with a bunch of volunteers. He has a beautiful open patio and we had candles lit and just sat outside late into the night talking. Today I'm doing absolutely nothing all day...we usually go to Yoga ... read more

Hello Friends, My mom has been harassing me, informing me that a blog once every couple weeks apparently doesn't count for much. So I thought I would step it up and actually start uploading pictures!!! Exciting, no? Anyhoo...so I'm at my "teaching" job today and am slowly forcing my future nursing student to do lots of math homework and I thought in the times between questions I would come up with a blog entry. My life has become fairly formulaic. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays I teach Math and Science and Computers and Knitting. On Tuesdays and Thursdays I work at the clinic, Saturday morning Yoga, Sunday evening dinner at Tim's. The only things that change from day to day are the people I interact with. I'm always meeting new people and at the clinic you ... read more

Wow...it seems like there is so much to say, I have begun volunteering at a clinic named Tiny Tim and Friends which treats orphans and women with HIV. Its a very intense, sobering experience yet obviously very interesting and (I hate to say it) rather fun. Most of the patients, since they are receiving high quality (free!!) treatment at Tiny Tim's are fairly healthy with minor complaints and then some are more complicated, all of the work though is incredibly absorbing. I have just now (this morning) moved out of the house I was in and into a new living arrangement with my friend, Erin. Erin also works at Tiny Tim which is how I met her and we were both in awkward living arrangements so we gave up cheapness for comfort (I suppose that's what ... read more

So I know...the idea of a blog is that I'm supposed to write in it every once in a while, right? It turns out thats not as easy as it sounds in a country like this. It isn't that people don't have computers, they do, and a lot of them even have internet...its that the internet is sloooow....like 1994 slow. Its a change of pace, everything here is. The first couple of days I was here I had to reteach myself to walk. As I've always thought of walking (in my foolish, American way) its about getting somewhere. But here, its about the journey, what people do here could not possibly be called walking in any sense of the word, people stroll: Slowly, carefully, with meaning. On my first day of walking I felt like the ... read more

So, I made it to Lusaka and discovered there is plenty of chocolate to be had. I have made two good friends so far: Theo (a four year old boy) and Lulu (a cat). I'd include pictures but I'm using an internet cafe and I walked here (over an hour walk) so I didn't feel like carrying my laptop, I think I will be moving in a couple days to a place with internet, at which point I will be able to include visual aids for this (as of now) incredibly boring blog. Tej, my lovely host, has introduced me to many wealthy American and European expats who run/work on a wide variety of charitys/NGOs so I am currently doing a taste testing of all my options. I will spend tomorrow investigating the possibility of working ... read more

I arrived at the Dulles airport to discover, upon passing through security. I'd forgotten the Trader Joe's dark chocolate caramels purchased especially for my trip. I was saddened by my absent mindedness but figured this would not be the end of the world and continued onward. Dulles was oddly empty and in no time I found myself sitting on a very large airplane with three seats to myself on my way to Johannesburg, South Africa. My nearest neighbor was an elderly South African man who, overhearing my conversation with Aunt Becky began to talk about how different Americans are from the people I would be meeting in Zambia. All seemed quite well until he commented, "I hope you don't like luxuries such as chocolate". This, obviously struck a very sensitive nerve in me as the man ... read more
