So Gone!

Asia » Cambodia » South » Phnom Penh February 1st 2011

It's been a while I know.. Which makes it slightly harder to remember everything that's happened in the last 4 + months.. For the most part I've been living and working in Phnom Penh. I'm sharing a big house with 4 other people and working in a private school called American Pacific. The school only goes up to grade 6 so from 2 to about 16 but the grades are separated by ability rather then age so in Grade 6 I have a few 10 year old's as well as the older children. We had the Water Festival which was amazing but ended in disaster.. I spent Christmas in Kampot with lots of friends and the New years in Sihanoukvil on the beach! both were amazing! Polly's been here for the last month which has been ... read more

Soo I’ve come to the end of my time in the village.. To live in the countryside with the teachers and the students was a beautiful experience.. and it’s them that I will remember for a long time. The baking heat and torrential rain added to the difficulties but it made even more rewarding. I want to thank the organization for allowing me this opportunity from which I gained the confidence to feel I could teach and it was the interest and gratefulness of the young people I taught that gave it to me. On my last day I took the students on a trip to Phnom Da a temple on a hill surrounded by flooded rice pains built in the 6th century. It was only a couple of hours away but from the excitement of ... read more

iSo far, so good... Well, I've been back and working at the school for over a month and everything’s falling back into place and I’m really getting back into the rhythm of things... and I now get to ride the moto to school and back two times a day which is always fun! the main road with all the house's on we call hello road as every single child run out of their house shouting hello at me as i ride past. A description of my day?? 5.30am usually get woken up at by the chickens or at 6am by the wedding / funeral it’s very hard to tell the difference as they both hire the biggest speakers you can get then chant, pray and play local music and drum and bass at full volume for ... read more

Hey guys! I've finally made it back... I think it took about four months for them to finish all my dental work, but they did and it was free. so it was worth it all in the end. I just want to say thank you for all the people who helped me when I was back in the U.K especially Polly and her family for letting me live with them! I wouldn't be here with out you guys.. So anyway! I've been back about two weeks and a bit.. Im living at the same school out in the sticks of Takeo province. Its beautiful flat countryside with the odd hill dotted here and there, Im trying to get out of the habit of saying this but its sooooooo hot and sooo humid. i wont say it ... read more

So after the festivities of Christmas and new year.. we have finished our traveling and have started to work! it wasn't the easiest place to find but last week we arrived in the pitch black at the school well be working at! in the dark there wast much to see so we had an early night.. i awoke to the pre dawn chorus of the many roosters, hens, cows, dogs and people that make the Cambodian morning.. it starts around 5ish. the mornings here are beautiful its much cooler and we could see the school, mostly a wooden structure and the large gardens that surround it.. it does tend to look more like a farm quite alot of the time.. there about 60 chickens at the moment, there aiming for 200 there both eaten and sold ... read more

weve headed north this time to another few places we had'nt been before. First stop was Kratie pronunced kracheh, sleepy little town on the bank of the mekong.. it had amazing sunsets and was our base to go see the Irrawady dolphins. we took a small boat up the river to a protected area and was actually suprised too see quite a few. probally the same ones over and over again its quite hard to tell when there under water.. theres only 75 left in the whole of cambodia. they are very strange looking for dolphins.. unlike flipper they have a stubbed nose, big black eyes and a huge smile as well! local folk law has it that a young girl was to be married to the snake king but she refused killed herself and the ... read more

After a week of work and not much sleep we opted for a quieter place.. koh kong the "city" is the place to go to to get to an untouched island and the biggest protected jungle in Cambodia... it is also the dead dog capital of the world... well they weren't dead but they all looked pretty close to it.. and so was the place itself.. this is the sort of thing that happens in most border towns Ive been to.. whatever they border they tend to be ugly smelly and have the most malnourished flea ridden dogs you could hope to see.. but we found our man Mr Neat at the blue moon guest house and deciding to spend as little time as possible in the town we booked the island trip for 8am the ... read more

well.. in Sihanoukville we were planning on relaxing.. however on the first night we arrived we revistited an old bar we had been to before.. within the space of an hour they had asked us to work for them.. sooo we spent the next 5 - 6 days giving out flyers for UV night, Ladies night, Head band night etc.. they weren't very original with the names.. worked behind and in front of the bar.. best of all we got free food and drink.. now this all sounds good on the surface but it does soon take its toll.. and after 5 days of "work" we had to give it up take a trip to an island and chill out.. we did have adams birthday there tho! and the staff even made him a cake and ... read more

so got out of the big city well if you can call it that.. nice 6 hours bus journey to kampot again weve gone back to visit an old friend at a place called Bodhi Villas.. definatly the coolest guest house in Cambodia! been having a lot of fun renting scooters ridding out into the lush country side. we went for a swim in a lake.. hired the rustiest pedalo we could find put the three biggest "barrangs" (us) in it and set off with a cooler full of coke on a mission to the middle.. unfortunately there wasn't much room on the boat and the wasn't any pedals just bare metal which meant we had to change pedaller often, now the first problem came when pat moved to the front of the boat. one minuet ... read more

it always starts with a long flight.. 13 hours not tv and only two small bottle of water.. but managed to sleep most of it. didn't get up to much in KL apart from seeing the towers and the zoo/jungle in the city.. but soon we left.. 2am to be precise on our much nicer flight into Cambodia, once we got past the 15 customs desks and out of the air con its was beautiful. straight away I remembered why Ive chosen this place. blue sky's and broken roads, 30-35 degrees every day.. dust and palm trees, squat toilets with bum hoses. were paying about $3 dollars a night for our room, $1.50 for a meal and the best one $50 cents CENTS for a pint!! we have been in siem reap about 5 days.. i ... read more
