Today I took a cruise around Sydney harbour starting from Circular Key with a stopoff at Taronga Zoo where I saw my first examples of Australian wildlife including the expected Koalas and Kangaroos. I finished reading The last oil shock which deals with the idea of "peak oil" which is basically that oil production will peak in the next 10 years and then start to decline and the likely effects.... read more

The first day out exploring Sydney and the first port of call was Sydney Observatory which is located on the Rocks. Like Greenwich this is now more of a museum than a working observatory. In keeping with the fact it is located by a port this observatory had a particular role with timekeeping through the use of its transit telescope and it provided the time of the departing ships. I then walked down through the Rocks, around Circular Key, past the Opera House and through the Domain and the Royal Botantic Gardens to Mrs Macquaries Point and Chair (so named after the Governors wife who used to watch the incoming ships from a chair cut out of the rock). This is a very large parkland which is a great place to relax, if you can avoid ... read more

After an overnight flight where I was again unable to sleep I arrived at Sydney airport around 7 am half a hour later than scheduled. Fortunately my parents flight from San Francisco was also slightly delayed, the net result was that less than 5 minutes after passing customs they also passed and we met up without issue. From there we caught a minibus into the city and were at the hotel well before check-in time. We left the bags and went wandering around the city getting our bearings by visiting Darling harbour, the Rocks and Circular Quay. After grabbing lunch it was back to the hotel to check-in and an afternoon nap to catch up on the missing sleep.... read more

Last day in Singapore was spent doing general sightseeing. I started out by heading to the Singapore Flyer which is a larger version of the London Eye and has some fabulous views over Singapore. After that I made a trip around the city taking in the Grand Prix circuit, Raffles Hotel, Singapore Museum and Fort Canning park. 5pm headed off to the airport for the flight to Sydney abroad an Airbus 380. Very impressive airplane. For those of you who don't know it's trhe latest airplane from Airbus that's just gone into service and it's the largest passenger airplane in the world and has 2 decks, I was on the top one. Left at 9 pm.... read more

Asia » Singapore » Sentosa Island April 19th 2009

The first full day in Singapore so it's off to Sentosa island, the island just off the south of Singapore that has lots of entertainment and beaches. Sentosa is the most southerly point on mainland asia apparently. I use the subway which uses a smartcard, it's 2 dollars with 1 back if you return the card, and then over to Sentosa on the monorail. Once on the island there are couple of artificial beaches but when you look out to sea there are oil tankers waiting to go into port - it puts you off going into the water for a swim. I visited Fort Siloso, the British Fort and learned that it's a myth that the guns weren't used in the fall of Singapore to the Japanese in 1942, they were facing out to sea ... read more

On to Singapore on Singapore airlines, again the travel was trouble free an again it was at night and I was unable to sleep. Straight through passport control and customs without queues, delays or issues. Again I was met and collected for my transfer to the hotel. I arrived at the hotel in the marina area which is just by the F1 circuit, the Singapore Flyer and of course the marina itself. I spent the afternoon wandering around the area getting my bearings. Singapore is quite a change after Dubai, it's as if it's a finished version while Dubai is still a work in progress. They both have the new buildings and skyscapers both Singapore has much less building work and is far greener. It also feels much hotter due to the humidity. ... read more

First full day in Dubai so I head off to the Mall of the Emirates, one of the largest malls in the world. It was the largest outside America until a new a one opened in guess where, Dubai. I spend a couple of hours strolling around and it is very impressive but when all is considered it's just a lot of shops which is great if your into that sort of thing; I'm not ! However going to the shops was never the real aim of going, there is also an indoor ski slope so I sign up and spend 2 hours at SkiDubai I last skiied over 25 years ago and as expected I fell on the first attempt to go down the slope but after that I got into the habit and only ... read more
