Day 123: Tuesday, March 30th, 2010. Hoi An City to Hue, Vietnam. Per Intrepid Notes, "Days 5-6 Hue. Returning to the road, a bus trip takes us on our journey north. We ascend the dramatic Hai Van Pass, passing through rural countryside and the picturesque fishing village of Lang Co, to Hue.

Arriving in Hue, the former imperial capital of Vietnam, we have this afternoon and almost all of the following day to enjoy the the many sights and relatively slow pace of this tranquil city. We have the opportunity to visit the Imperial Citadel, one of the Nguyen emperors' tombs and also enjoy a dragonboat cruise on the Perfume River. Hue, known as the centre of Buddhism and education in Vietnam, also has a wealth of pagodas and monasteries to discover. If you would like to ... read more

Day 122: Monday, March 29th, 2010. Hoi An, Vietnam. This morning most of us headed off to the My Son Temple ruins. Unfortunately they were damaged thru both time, but especially from the Vietnam War. Still, they were pretty cool to see. Reminded me of the Altun Ha temple Mom, Scott and myself visited in Mexico. While walking around (and then on the bus ride back), I had a chance to talk to Rita- that woman has had an interesting life. I could totally picture a movie and told her she should write a book. Myself, Tini and Susan had the bus drop us off at the Blue Eye tailor shop which was just a couple of blocks away from the hotel. Tini had ordered a dress for part of her wedding (getting married same day ... read more

Day 121: Sunday, March 28th, 2010. Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) to Hoi An, Vietnam. Days 3-4 Hoi An Leaving Ho Chi Minh City, we fly to Danang (about 1 hour) before continuing our journey to Hoi An by bus (about 40 minutes). On arrival, we take an orientation tour of the ancient town. Once a thriving river port, Hoi An's distinctive architecture has been preserved and restored, making it a favourite with Intrepid travellers and leaders alike. Wandering the streets and narrow alleyways here brings hours of pleasure and discovery and you'll still be able to get a taste of the town's affinity with trade at the many great little shops selling ceramics, woodware, handicrafts and tailored clothing. There is something for everyone in Hoi An and it is the perfect place to pick up ... read more

Day 120:Saturday, March 27th, 2010. Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam. This morning we were up at 7am and on the road at 7:30am. First up was a great bakery, ABC Bakery, and we all grabbed various yummy bread products to go. Then, we were off to the Cu Chi Tunnels. These are the tunnels that were made by the Viet Kong and used during the Vietnam War. I honestly wasn't sure what to expect. I guess I just thought we'd see some old tunnels, some collapsed and move on. They have this area set up as a shrine and while I understand that they were on the other side of the war and are proud of a "victory" (not sure if I should call it that), I was quite disturbed to see the glee with ... read more

Day 119:Friday, March 26th, 2010. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam. Per Intrepid notes: Days 1-2 Ho Chi Minh City Xin cho! Welcome to Vietnam.
You can arrive at any time on day 1 as there are no activities planned until the important welcome meeting. Your leader will leave a note at reception telling you where and when this important meeting will take place. Please ask a member of reception for this information. The meeting will be followed by an optional group dinner. On day 2, we travel out of the city to visit the former Viet Minh underground stronghold at Cu Chi. The extensive tunnel system here provides great insight into the tenacity and resourcefulness of the Vietnamese people. We return to Ho Chi Minh City in time for lunch and in ... read more

Day 118: Thursday, March 25th, 2010. Sydney, Australia to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia So I got up a few hours before checkout and I went to find a post office to mail some stuff back to the States. I just wanted to get rid of some of the weight in the backpack so I was sending paperwork (trip souvenirs and such), clothing that I still wanted, a back up hard drive of my pictures, and underwater disposable camera that I had used on the Reef but forgot to get processed and a LOTR Location book that I had picked up in New Zealand and had kept forgetting to mail off. None of it suspicious stuff, but I ended up having to open the box twice after it was sealed because it ends up I couldn't send the ... read more

Day 115 - 117: Monday, March 22nd thru Wednesday, March 24th, 2010. Sydney, Australia. On Monday, Becky and myself took a ferry to Manly (suburb of Sydney). Shaz had suggested the cheap ferry trip as opposed to the expensive harbor cruises. It was a nice view and a short ride to Manly. Becky crashed by the beach in the shade with a book and I went hunting for a nail shop- I needed a pedicure like crazy. Found a place, but they were busy so decided to get the hair taken care of instead. So, for one day on this trip my hair was tamed. Yea!! We headed back to Sydney in the early afternoon and Becky hopped on the train to the airport and I hopped on a bus back to the hotel. I chilled ... read more

Day 114: Sunday, March 21st, 2010. Sydney, Australia Today, Becky and myself visited the Chinese Garden: Garden of Friendship and the Sydney Aquarium. The garden was gorgeous and peaceful- except for the city sounds and buildings everywhere. It's like their Central Park. The aquarium was pretty cool with the best part being the Dugong tank and the Shark tank. Both tanks had tubes that you could walk thru to get a "underwater" visual of the critters. Amazing (and some were scary) animals. I especially liked the Shark Ray (front half looks like a stingray and back end looks like a shark). The Dulong's were pretty cool... read more

Day 113: Saturday, March 20th, 2010. Sydney, Australia. A couple of Aussie friends that I made during Contiki New Zealand got together with me during my Sydney stay. Becky flew in and stayed at a hotel just a few blocks away from me (I moved to the Pensione Hotel Saturday) until Monday when she had to head back to Adelaide and work. She joined myself, Justin (American) and Sandra for the bridge climb. A perfect day to do the Sydney Harbor Bridge Climb and not just because of the weather. It was my 33rd birthday! Perfect timing. So, we all suited up, harnessed up, and started the climb. It was a 3 1/2 hour tour and the sights and history was amazing. I thought I did very well physically but 2 days later my calves informed ... read more
