Today I move south from Wanaka to Te Anau, more coach travel but I think I'm getting used to it.  The journey from Wanaka to Queenstown is uneventful, i'm picked up at my hostel door and driven through the rapidly decreasing rolling hills, past  slopes covered in vinyards again, the straight rows running off onto infinity, the vines are once more protected by fine white netting, in comparisson to yesterdays fluffy balls today is a covering of spider silk enveloping the vines like the morning dew on cornish gorse. I have a 2 hour stop over in Queenstown before my next bus and I plan to explore the town and have a little lunch, within 30 feet of the bus I'm pleased I made the decission to stay in wanaka with it's cool chilled atmosphere, everything ... read more

I think I'm getting into a rhythm with my travelling now, I spend 1 day travelling, 1 day being adventurous and 1 day being calm, then back to the beginning.  Today was the calm day, and therfore tomorow is travelling. It really has been a very relaxed day, it started well with breakfast by the lake front, and continued with a gentle walk along the shores of the lake.  The shore is made up of mica rich, shaded grey rock of different size, from a rough sand through to pebbles, and reaching out into the water, like piers, boulders are strewn haphazardly, the dull grey rocks are transformed by the mica which glints and sparkles in the mid day sun. As you sit on the beach and dig your hands into this rough textured broken down ... read more

After my busy day yesterday I was too tired to put, finger to keyboard to update. today, still feeling tired and slightly achey, sitting on Wanaka lake front with my tea and oj waiting for a full breakfast i feel calm and relaxed.  The sun is shining from behind me and my table is half shade half sun. The lake infront of me is dark and mysterious it's calm, deep waters reflecting the surrounding hills and mountains as though they are really below the surface. To my right in a small marina yacths and powerboats clink gently as they bob on there moorings and The chatter from my follow customers, in a multitude of different languages, mingle with the piped music and click clack of skateboards on the street to give the whole that feeling of ... read more

It's been another day of travelling today, the coach left fox at 8ish this morning And after travelling through the mountains I arrived at Wanaka (wa-na-ka) this lake side town is queentowns smaller sister, but just as well known for it's walking and adventurous activities.  The bus journey was an adventure in itself, our driver "big George" was a talkaholic, the journies I've taken so far have involved a bit of running commentary from the driver. But big George was a gregarious character.  The bus travelled through the mountains to it's first stop at a salmon farm, a short covered walkway took all the passangers to the ponds and cafe. Well Im not sure ponds. It was one big pond with 4 octagonal wooden enclosures of about 8m across. Each of these had salmon at different ... read more

Having done a whole glacier day yesterday, instead of the half day I'd planned I've stayed in fox for another day giving me chance to see lake matheson and do some laundry, the hostel scuppered all my plans by doing my laundry for me, it arrived back on my bunk this evening washed and dried, even the dry sac it had been packed in which makes me alittle worried, but it meant I had nothing to do this afternoon which turned well in the end.  This morning I took my life into my own hands and borrowed a bike from the hostel to take me the 2km to lake matheson, the mirror lake. To say the bike was badly maintained was an understatement. I don't look after my bike but this one had, no breaks, and ... read more

So today was glacier day, and it's been brilliant. I've wanted to see a glacier for years to now and to have finally experienced one and been mesmerised by it is just amazing. The constant reminder of the force of nature is truly humbling.  Fox glacier is one of the only glaciers in the world to be surrounded by rainforest. Now I knew that fact before I went but I hadn't appreciated what it meant. The walk up, please note up, to the surface of the glacier saw us walking up the morain to the terminal face (get me with the lingo), well not that near because it's too dangerous, then moving to the left of the glacier itself to walk up the hill on the side, in 3 minutes you go from standing beneath a wall ... read more

Well it's been a busy day, but most of my time has been taken up on either the train or the bus. Not that I'd have you think that either of these was a chore.  My early start from Christchurch took me to a packed railway station, the two deisel trains that were to pull me and the multitudes of other passanger over the southern alps and through arthurs pass were already throbbing by the time I arrived and the two luggage compartments filled me with dread as I saw my bag wedged into an available hole pushed by 2 able kiwis.  The journey starts out over the cantabury plains, which are to be honest quite flat and after the first twenty minutes quite boring, and I'll be honest I feel asleep, well it was an ... read more

I've had a great day! There have been tall towers, steaming coffees, swinging gondolas and daring downhills. All told my kind of day!  This epic day started very early, well for me anyways, the dorm awoke at 7! I mean 7 I'm on holiday for gods sake, but after a pointless 1/2 an hour attempt at staying in bed I got up to face the day.  One of the guys in my dorm looks just like John Malchovich, turns out his name is tim and he's Canadian. Well that's what he says and he's here for some fishing, but I suspect I know the truth, I can officially say I've seen Malcatraz in his tighty whiteys. He made a valleant attempt to talk to me this morning, but I'm hopeless in a morning, I ummed and ... read more

Well my first day in Christchurch is drawing to a close and overall it's been quite chilled. I think this city is quite chilled nothing looks like it happens quickly but that's really what I needed today.  After arriving so late last night and for the first time feeling the time shift, probably because I went straight to bed rather than seeing anything first, I woke up late and was all fuzzy. I'd meant to go up on the gondola and hire a bike to come back down. But I couldn't face it so after finding my hostel and dumping my stuff I wandered the streets and bought a tram ticket, I sat on the 1920's tram travelling round the city remembering the last time I took a tram, it was in Lisbon, the difference was ... read more
