A trip may be ruined or not, it depends much on how we deal with the people we meet. While I don't deny that I too was hassled by persistent touts and beggars, or overcharged by hotels, travel agents and local drivers, and hurt by some westerners who judged me based on my nationality and said rude words to me, I still can say that 90% of the people I've met when traveling are great ones. The guide (in the middle) and driver (on the right side) were very kind to me and they helped me a lot during my tour to the southernmost region of Vietnam in September 2009.

When I traveled in Savannakhet in January 2009, I met a Vietnamese family in the town and they invited me to the Vietnamese lunar new year party. The two boys wearing red T-shirts are Vietnamese. They were born in Laos and can speak Vietnamese. The girl is a Laotian and now she lives in the US. She is a friend of this Vietnamese family and was invited to the party.

WONDERFUL ENTRY
This is such a touching blog, I really enjoyed reading it. I agree that the people are one of the most imprtant aspects of travel ... you have explained this so well. That photo of Kim Phuc is amazing and always chilling. Thanks for such a great entry yet again!

memories of Vietnam
I did two tours in Vietnam ('65-66, '67-68), one with a rifle company and the second with the 5th Special Forces Gp. Got a bit banged up right at the end of the 2d tour, but will always the country and its remarkably resilient people fondly, and always enjoy this young lady's posts. Would love to go back but doubt that I could survive the required eighteen hours in the air in my state of advanced dotage.
