I can’t believe we’re already a month into our adventure. Hoi An literally looks magical; it’s the city of candle light at night. Hoi An accommodates for its dense population of backpackers and travellers with a vast range of bars, markets, restaurants and activities. We stayed in Ngo Homestay where we rented bikes and cycled half an hour outside old town to the relaxing An Bang beach. We have yet to find a beach with a calm sea; it’s sadly been too rough to swim. However the weather over the past week has been bliss; 31 degrees in clear sunshine. Heavenly. Subsequently, we’ve mostly been spending our days drinking beer in the sun and shop. (Hoi An is fantastic for shopping, particularly cheap custom made suits and dresses). I also got round to trying their famous egg coffee, or Ca Phe Den Da as the Vietnamese call it. When the French colonials took over the Vietnamese couldn’t afford milk so used an egg as an alternative. It’s also known as a ‘poor mans cappuccino’. It’s surprisingly delicious.
We spent our nights along a strip of bars over the lake, especially at Moe’s Tavern (yep, from the Simpsons) where all the young backpackers gather. For the 5th time in Vietnam we bumped into an Irish couple, Emily and Neil, who have been doing almost an identical route to us. They represent every positive stereotype we have about the Irish; happy, wacky, boozy and beautiful. We’ve had hilarious craic with them throughout and no doubt we’ll bump into eachother again.
We’ve made some great memories in Hoi An and we’ve both agreed it’s our favourite town yet for it’s entertainment and nightlife.
Now, we’re on a 16 hour sleeper bus to Mui Ne and it’s safe to say I’ve never felt more appreciative of Netflix.
