excerpts from the online article, Visit the Vietcong's World: Americans Welcome, By Seth Mydans,July 7, 1999: Following the man in green fatigues, the tourists arrive at an open-sided hut, where the women in black show them to their seats. There, on a big-screen television set, the Vietnam War plays on: B-52's drop strings of bombs, villagers run for cover, communist guerrillas fight back. -- For those who still don't get the message, a narrator says: "Cu Chi, the land of many gardens, peaceful all year round under shady trees ... Then mercilessly American bombers have ruthlessly decided to kill this gentle piece of countryside ... Like a crazy bunch of devils they fired into women and children ... The Americans wanted to turn Chu Chi into a dead land, but Cu Chi will never die." --- ... read more

11 february 2005 i made a day of the co chi tunnels. dung, my cousin arranged for a motorbike driver to take me on an hour-long drive to the tunnels. i had no idea what was ahead. not just the thousands of motorbikes that RULE the roads (cars + trucks don't have a chance), but the underground tunnels that took 25 years for the VC to dig! first my driver, thanh, was a tiny vietnamese 32 yr old man who was shorter than me (i'm 5'2"). he was teaching me how to speak vietnamese as best as he could, always busting out in a little laugh when i completely mispronounced such simple words like thank you and please. i was pretty good with identifying the animals on the side of the road though. it was a ... read more

thursday, 11.00pm 10 feb 2005 i was 3 years old when we left 2 weeks before the fall of saigon in april 1975. my mom told me of running from building to building with bombs exploding in the near distance. she was trying to get our paperwork in order so we could leave as a family with my irish american father. he met her working as a vendor for the military providing all the provisions needed to maintain their bases. she worked in his office. they met, fell in love, had me, then along came my little brother. my father adopted my mother's first 2 children, who i only know as my brother + sister . he needed to get all of his children out of the country, and quickly. his company told him this was ... read more

Hi there...! Been a slight delay since the last blog due to lack of time and access to PC's (and to give you all a break!!) We left Hue and moved down the coast 4 hours to an old provincial capital called Hoi An.. another 'quaint' and relatively small coastal town. This was a nice 3 days and we deliberately didn't book any trips or tours to give us the opportunity to just chill for a minute - things had been a little hectic to say the least up till then.. Hoi An's main asset is its 'tailoring' facilities on every corner so we just couldn't resist...after 2 days and 3 visits for re-fits we walked away with a Linen suit, cord jacket and a couple of ties for me and trousers and 3 silk tops, ... read more

Seems a long time since our last blog. Saw the Royal Ballet at the Palace in Luang Prabang (dah-lings), visited some incredible waterfalls (one with no water), and trekked to see some remote villages in Laos where they do not even use money. Took a very dodgy minibus for 10 hours, along a very bumpy and windy road to Vientiane and pampered ourselves by the pool at the posh Plaza Hotel (slipping back into the old ways already). Now in the fast & crazy Ho Chi Minh City, dodging millions of mopeds which drive on the wrong side of the road and on pavements. Karl loves making kamikaze road crossings while I shut my eyes and scream (much to the amusement of the locals). Spent this morning at the Cu Chi tunnels learning how to set ... read more

Had the most quintesential Aussie send off in Syndey - 4 essential ingredients: people, beach, booze and nudity (no not mine). I was prepared for Vietnam to be quite terrifying first couple of days (particularly as i have arrived on the days preceding the BIGGEST event of the Vietnamese calendar 'tet' aka NYE celebrations).... but (while somewhat daunting) the pace and filth of HCMC failed to raise my stress levels.... This has lead me to realised that sitting on a beach for the next 3 weeks may actually be what the doctor requires. Have booked into actual hotel for the evening, to lighten the load as i haven't properly slept since the 6 hrs in Sydney and any further pressure may turn me from content to freaked-out. Have intentions to either get the train tickets sorted ... read more

Hey everyone... What happened to all the great comments? I guess you are getting tired of our long descriptions of how much fun we are having.... Last night tonight in Vietnam. Mixed feelings, and can't believe our vacation is coming close to an end. Took a one day tour to the Mekong Delta today. It was quite interesting to see how some things like rice paper and coconut candies were made. Also made us glad that we were born in Canada. The poverty is pretty bad in this part of the world. Too bad I don't know how to upload my pics here, we'll do that when we get home. Saw some monkeys and snakes in horrible enclosures at a "bonsai" farm on one of our stops. Really just the size of a bird cage. Pretty ... read more

So, here we are in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) on our way to the beach. Spent a few days in Hue and Hoi An. Hoi An is charming all right - at night. During the day you get so sick of touts - "please buy something" and people following you around to speak english (i.e. pretend to be interested where you are from then ask if you want to buy clothes) or get you to go into their shop. We just happened to be in Hoi An for their lunar festival once a month. It was very cool to see all the games played in the street which they close to traffic. ALso lots of dancing and singing. Saw a weird game like Bingo where the announcers were singing, it was like a performance/dance. Very ... read more

After a few days in Ho Chi Minh city, I am ready to end my cycling tour of Vietnam. Fortunately, I have been able to stow away mental maps of the city grids to facilitate my city tours. Trying to consult a map while pedaling through Vietnamese intersections would surpass ordinary multi-tasking feats, driving while using chopsticks and a mobile phone included. Unfortunately, cycling amid such pollution has a cost aswell. I paid the price, and lost my voice. Despite my newly acquired coarse whisper, I managed to befriend a lovely Irish girl who was sharing my dorm quarters at Hotel Tropic. Over a bowl of green curry and a plate of garlic eggplant, we became immersed in discourse and discovered uncanny similarities in our tastes and interests. We were both trying to gain some practical ... read more
