Hi Everyone Well we arrived safely at Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) airport and were greeted by our friends Roy and Lisa who we were staying with for the next 9 nights (lucky them!). We were also greeted by around 100 taxi drivers circling us like vultures! This city was a real eye opener - from the traffic to the poverty. We were very grateful to have a very comfortable place to stay with Roy and Lisa as I dare say the hostels would have been a little 'rough'! After a quick settle in our wonderful tour guides Mimi, Lisa and Roy from "More On Tours" helped us to explore the neighbourhood. We quickly realised that there were not many white people around the area, regardless, people were very friendly. Rachael also discovered that the shopping ... read more

Hellloooo.... So it continues. We've managed to get ourselves from Hanoi all the way down Vietnam and now we're back in Cambodia. It's been a busy few weeks and we have seen a lot. Thankfully, after the relative chaos of Hanoi, we got off the train in Hue and found things a wee bit quieter. Also a tad warmer, bliss. It was quite an adventure just getting the train. We left at 11pm and arrived at just before 11 the next morning. It was an evening spent in a 6 berth cabin being thumped and bashed around a tiny, little bed as the train driver did his very best to make up some time if possible. At one point in the early morning we both looked at each other as if to say "eeekkkkk", the green ... read more

No, I haven't made a pilgrimage around the Indochinese sub-continent, getting to know the poor, swimming across the Mekong to a leper colony, and learning the ways of communism in my pre-revolutionary youth... yet... I'm in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City since its 'liberation' in 1975), city of Motorbikes. There are 6 million people in this city and an estimated 5 million registered motorbikes or scooters. At all hours, the streets are like rivers of bikes riding 4 or 5 abreast in each direction, with a few crazy taxis, buses and private cars floating along. To cross the road here, you don't wait for a break, you just walk across, preferably not looking, as the traffic magically (the drivers here use 'the force', not their targetting computers) avoids you. I've been here 5 days now, staying ... read more

our last day in vietnam together. i had been away from mom for 3 days in cambodia. it was refreshing but i missed being with mom. so i took an earlier flight to ho chi minh city to meet up with mom and my cousin dong's house. mom was glad to see me as she was taking her usual post-lunch afternoon nap. i woke her to go explore saigon to try to find the house that i was raised in....the one we left before the fall of saigon. mom was game. we got some lunch and jumped in a metered cab ...on a mission. mom remembered the exact street address. we wiggle through a million motos (that rule the roads) to find ourselves in front of a line of shoe stores open to the street. mom ... read more

Time has passed quickly Seven weeks in Viet Nam Time to see Thailand. Well, that haiku pretty much sums it up...well sort of. It is amazing how quickly time is passing before my eyes. I can't believe that I'll actually be saying goodbye to Viet Nam. Sort of weird considering I've been calling it "home" for the last 7 weeks. But sometimes you just have to say goodbye, right? Besides, I'll be saying Hello! to Thailand. Needless to say but I'll say it anyway, I'm getting excited! Well, except for the part where I have to pack up my bags as soon as I make this blog entry when I head back to my hotel. Hmm, maybe this will be the World's largest blog entry for me. haha. Packing up shouldn't be that bad. I think ... read more

Not much else to do tonight especially since HBO is on the fritz! Well the rest of this afternoon I spent wandering around the streets of HCM City some more and then remembered that I wanted to go to the Vietnamese Traditional Medicine Institute for a massage. Two dollar massage Hits the spot after shopping Rejuvenation! At the institute all of the masseurs are blind. For two dollars it was a pretty good massage...read: you get what you pay for. lol It was funny, she started to massage my legs. Then this thought pops into my head..."oh no. I haven't shaved my legs in a while..hope the friction does not cause a fire!" haha Then the rhythmic pounding action happens. It was amazing. I had to double check that she didn't have a third arm or ... read more

Another hot day Walking, shopping and eating Where is the aircon? Okay, I popped into an internet cafe over 1.5 hours ago to escape the heat and my weakening willpower to not buy anything. I have spent most of my morning wandering the shops and markets since I don't really feel like walking thru a museum today. Plus I can only eat so much! lol Okay, so I can eat a lot...haha I just wanted to make a quick entry before heading out for a bite to eat and then who knows what. All is well and I look forward to touring the Cu Chi Tunnels and the Cao Dai Temple tomorrow. Should be an all day event. I will have to report on some of my "observations" here in Viet Nam in my next entry ... read more

Well, the last couple of days has been full of lots of things. I'll start more or less where I stopped off with yesterday's entry. Okay, after the chance meeting with Jean and company at the Reunification Palace they invited me to join them and their tour guide of a little tour around Ho Chi Minh City. I didn't have too much really planned for the rest of the day and they seemed like nice folks so I went with my gut instinct and joined their little tour. So Ngoc, our little tour guide directed us to a market somewhere in District Three. Jean and I were the "leaders" of the pack. We weren't walking exceptionally fast. In fact it was kinda on the slow side, yet we had to stop repeatedly realizing that Ken, Tom ... read more

Going for a walk. Reunification hall On the agenda. This is gonna be a short entry but just wanted to let the parents know that I'm a-okay! I started out about 9AM this morning to check out the Reunification Hall and ended up meeting some people from Atlanta, Georgia. The conversation started with Jean making a comment about my gray pants (remember the 3/4 length pants you found at Gaylans that were made in Vietnam Anita??) Anyway, we started chatting and I have ended up spending the day with Jean, her neighbour Tom and friend Ken plus their tour guide. Anyway, I'm using the free internet at the Spring Hotel (not where I'm staying!) so I really shouldn't stay on here too long. :) I'll be taking a day trip out to the Me Kong Delta ... read more

Well, I survived what I thought was going to be a 39 hour train ride. It turned out to ONLY be 33 hours. I was really lucky with respect to the other three people in my cabin. They all turned out to be pretty friendly and they really enjoyed practicing their English with me, the foreigner. Here's a recap of the last couple of days... I spent Saturday afternoon with Claire and Chelsea just walking around doing a bit of shopping and we grabbed a bite to eat. We eventually made it back to the Hostel and as per usual hung out round the couches. My only goal for the afternoon was to grab a shower before catching my 7PM train. Mission accomplished! Before I knew it, it was time to say goodbye to Claire. It ... read more
