The train arrived in Hanoi at 5am so we ended up getting an inconveniently expensive taxi from outside the station which took us conveniently the long way around to a really inconveniently expensive hotel. When it was light we wondered around the edge of Hoan Kiem lake watching the locals participate in group sessions of Tai Chi. The only sight open was the Den Ngoc Son temple so we went inside to have a snoop around and enjoy the views of the lake. Our first impressions of Hanoi was the traffic; busy, noisy, lots of scooters, and absolutely no room to cross the road safely. Whenever we had to cross the road we would try and wait for a local to turn up and then cross with them. My natural insticts when crossing the road is ... read more

Hello Everyone, Guess what - its still raining - but no worries, I wont be complaining about that again. ;-) Just posting another blog to add some more pictures. It takes too long to write a blog, download & upload pics etc all in one go that’s why it always comes bites-size at a time.. But maybe just a few words on where we have been causing trouble. After we left the strangest place in Vietnam - Haiphong - we got on a boat to the Cat Ba Islands. Sounds idyllic but its majority mud.. BUT we got a great hotel for a good discounted price (he probably feels sorry for us because of the weather as well..). The second day we hired a motorbike to explore the Island, which was a rather nice plan, besides ... read more

Halong Bay is where just about every tourist that comes anywhere near Hanoi goes to spend a couple of days. With nearly 2 000 islands and turquoise water it would look absolutely amazing if there was sunshine, although the shrouding mist does add somethig to it. After checking out a few of the options offered by the numerous travel agents I opted for the three day/two night package from a mid priced almost reputable crowd. Turned out to be a good choice everything they promised was honoured although the lido deck on the boat was a little off the pace. Fortunately my new found travel buddies for this leg ended up making the trip an enjoyable time. It's always good to listen to where other people have been and what they have seen. The second night ... read more

After my long and arduous bus journey from Vang Vieng to Hanoi we had to relax for a day and get out composure back. We set about wondering the small streets of old town Hanoi. A framing of French architecure but the soul of Vietnam. Many of the streets in old town are designated to one item or another. For instance our guesthouse is on the lock street, where they only sell locks, all kinds too; doors, bike, motorcycle, padlocks, etc... these shops sell many of the same things but they all seem to stay in business. Near us is the paper street, the toy street, and close by is the cigarette street where each shop only sells cigarettes! This makes it very easy to get around; you can recognize the street you are on by ... read more

Hi everyone, Hope you all had a fabulous Xmas and wore your hangovers with pride on New Year's Day! We have spent the last 2 1/2 weeks in Vietnam, taking in the sights of Hanoi, Halong Bay and Sapa. Hanoi was a bit of a culture-shock after our time in Laos. Or more a return to reality i guess! A bustling city, loud even by Asian standards, its filled with mad motorbike drivers who will quite happily run u down on the pavement, or drive whichever way they please. They only introduced motorcycle helmets as law about a month ago, so they all showng off these brand new, brightly coloured helmets. Just too bad about the maniac driving! While in Hanoi we've checked out various monuments and done all the usual sight-seeing stuff. The water-puppet theatre ... read more
