Our Pick up for train to Lao Cai took us to the train station and we boarded the 10.00pm sleeper train to Lao Cai. We had a small wooden compartment with four bunks but Tom paid double for us to have the compartment to ourselves. There was barely enough room for the two of us and our luggage! We arrived in Lao Cai at 6.00 am to rain and quickly found our pick up for Sa Pa, which was an hour's drive. As you leave Lao Cai you cross a river and on the right you can see a tall building which is in China! The journey to Sa Pa was very picturesque, travelling through the rice terraces and plots of sweetcorn. We passed through the occasional group of small houses and saw dogs, children and ... read more

Like the Chinese, the Vietnamese have a history of burying their dead twice - at least for those in rural areas where they have the land to do so. On the drive back from Halong Bay to Hanoi we stopped to see some first graves, often very simple ones with a rough plaque. After three years or so, the bones are dug up before sunrise, usually by the children of the deceased and with some ceremony, washed, and placed into a more permanent and ornate grave. Although it was now early afternoon and almost 40 degrees, we were also able to watch a man and his wife harvesting a rice patch for another family. Apparently they paid him $10 U.S. for the work that took about 1 1/2 hours. The rice fields in the delta are ... read more

Sapa adventure Train ride okay. Train travels to a place called Lao Cai. Cleaner train and they reserve carriages for tourists on 'The Pumpkin Express'. Arrived around 5.30am and we were met at the station by a guide who led us to a restaurant for breakfast before our bus ride up the mountain to Sapa. Very windy road with non existent safety barriers most of the way. Started raining on the way up and was bucketing down when we arrived in Sapa. It was a holiday as it was the 40th anniversary of the reunification of Vietnam so there were people and buses and cars everywhere. Finally got to our hotel around 10am and was met by our Sapa guide Chai. We couldn't check in until 2pm so she took us for a 2 hr walk ... read more

Sapa walk 1st and 2nd May Started off at the hotel around 9.30am. Very hot day already but a different type of heat then what is found in Hanoi. A lot drier. Walked down the mountainside and along getting to see a lot of rice fields and locals. Along the way we had a few local Hmong women who were there to help us negotiate the paths, etc. if needed. One lady was very insistent in helping me - I must have looked in need of help negotiating the potholes etc. We stopped a few times as one of the women had a baby that needed feeding a couple of times. (See picture). Their clothing is really gorgeous and exquisitely embroidered and must also be very hot. It was only when we stopped for lunch you ... read more

Should we trust the weather forecast in Vietnam...maybe not! After Halong, we waited few hours with a good meal in Hanoi before boarding our night train to Lao Cai. The weather forecast was pretty clear for the coming days in Sapa...it was going to rain...a lot! To reach Sapa, you take a tourist night train to Lao Cai, than jump on a mini-bus for 40km...up...up to the 1600 meters of altitude of Sapa. For info, Fansipan, the tallest mountain is continental South-East Asia has his summit at around 3100 meters...and is just past the corner from Sapa. And that weather forecast...well, it was bad. Mountain, spring and rain plus cold...do not make me, or the kids...happy people. I was ready for the worst...but this was it, we had planned to come. It is afirst visit for ... read more

From Muang ngoi Neua I made my way down to vang vieng via nong khiaw and Luang Prabang (it was a nightmare again finding a bed in the latter town, but I ended up sharing a room with a fellow traveller). The bus broke down on the way to Luang Prabang which meant that the journey, instead of taking a few hours, took the whole day. With some fellow passengers I passed the time by drinking beer outside a local restaurant and playing uno. Vang vieng features uncultured western revelry at its most shameless. I stayed in a hostel called EasyGo and met quite a few people there. I tubed (i.e. floated down the river on a rubber ring, visiting riverside bars on the way for beer pong and hammock slumbering), danced in the evenings at ... read more

My first trip of 2015 happened to fall on the very first day of the year. I spent it taking on the challenge of conquering Indochina's rooftop, url=https://www.google.com/maps/place/Fanxipan+Mountain,+Sa+Pa+District,+Vietnam/@22.3046143,103.7771881,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x36cd447dbb9edf8d:0xb1e8f8dda6932eacMount Fansipan . I went with 2 other friends and the trip was put altogether by my friend at Exotic Voyages, a well-known tour company. On New Year's Eve, we were in the middle of the new Noi Bai - Lao Cai Highway, url=https://www.google.com/maps/dir/05,+16,+29,+30,+33,+34,+39,+46,+57,+60,+Ph%E1%BA%A1m+H%C3%B9ng,+T%E1%BB%AB+Li%C3%AAm,+H%C3%A0+N%E1%BB%99i,+Vietnam/th%E1%BB%8B+tr%E1%BA%A5n+Sa+Pa,+Lao+Cai,+Vietnam/@21.8958136,104.6566859,9z/data=!4m13!4m1... read more

I don’t like the cold. I really don’t like the cold. Anybody who knows me well enough knows that I really don’t! But I do really, really, really like Sapa. This place is beautiful and mystical. This morning the alarm woke us as 7.15am to start our last day in Sapa. We had chosen today to do our trek and it really was not the best day to choose. We should have gone yesterday but today is our last day and we have our trek booked in already. We chose to do our trek with Sapa Sisters after much researching before we left home. They are a business that is run by women for women. We had our breakfast and said goodbye to the lovely staff of Sapa Elite Hotel. Frankie’s friend didn’t want him to ... read more

We started the day by being woken up at 5am with a knock on our cabin door saying we would be in Lao Cai station in about 30mins so we got our things ready and waited for the train to stop. We soon arrived but we hadn’t sorted a ride to Sapa. We got taken by some locals that said $5 dollars pp which we said ok to but they loaded our bags in the bus and just took off. They left us in the van for about 40mins...While they were gone I was talking to another couple in the van next to us and they had been waiting for over 1 ½ hrs. The driver came back with more backpackers to fill the van and we were on our way... We made our way up ... read more

We got up this morning and had brekkie that was included with our accommodation. Great brekkie of banana pancakes, – not as good as Cactus pancakes on Langkawi though! Toast, croque monsieur, fruit – local mandarins and bananas and fruit juices. After brekkie we headed out and were immediately joined by 3 local women, once again wanting to sell us their wares. They followed us for about 20mins. We walked upon some local fresh produce markets where we saw locals purchasing their fresh fruit, vegetables and meat – including dog. The produce all looks so fresh. We continued on through more streets of Sapa just wandering and taking looks at all the shops, eateries and hotels. There are loads of hotels/hostels to choose from in Sapa. A lot of choice, that is for sure. We headed ... read more
