Sapa The Intrepid group is no more and we have all gone our separate ways. It was sad to say goodbye to my American friend Darra this morning as we had had so much fun together and been there for each other over the last two and a half weeks. She was heading off to Bali and Lombock for another Intrepid trip with lots of sunshine and cultural experiences before flying back to Denver, Colorado. She will be sorely missed as I finish my travel without her presence. As I still had the whole day to fill in in Hanoi, I decided exercise was in order and headed up to the French quarter of the city as here is where many of the sightseeing places are such as the museums and the mausoleum that houses Ho ... read more

2 whole weeks down and we've been busy. After Hanoi we spent 3 days in Halong Bay on a Castaway Island Trip joined by Jonny's cousin Dan. After cruising through a few of the thousands of limestone hills and stopping for some brief acrobatic diving from the boat, we arrived at our private island and were greeted by the previous tour group who were a day ahead. A large dinner was followed by some drinking games and dancing and once everyone was drunk enough we went swimming in the phosphorescent waters to a lethal pontoon (due to the barnacles on the sides). We later found out that the phosphorescence was due to plankton in the water lighting up like fireflies when given energy from your movement. In Pitch black under the cloudy sky it was quite ... read more

Bree punching one in the face and almost kicking the same lady as she made a rapid descent down a muddy slope. As fate would have it, out of 511 hotels available on agoda in Ha Noi, we chose the same as Dennis and Nicole who we said goodbye to in Hue. They happened to be planning the same as us, a trip to Sapa in North West Vietnam, with some quick rearranging of our accommodation thanks to Tim our desk man; we booked into a 2 day trip leaving the following night. We piled the majority of our luggage into the corner of the hotels main dining room. We weren’t leaving on our overnight train until 9.50pm so we thought it would be a good idea to grab a $4 bottle of vodka and kick ... read more

We went for a good few hours trek with the local hill tribes women (yesterday). We ate at their family home. It was nice to see family life first hand. One of the village girls took a particular liking to me, at one point even smelling me. I guess i must appear strange to them. Im glad we went with the locals rather that the tours as it puts money straight into their hands and is more of a unique experince. I have developed my mo ped riding skills ie i can even carry stuff whilst sitting on the back, this seemed impossible at first. Note to self: get bike liscense when return home. Heading to the Laos border tomorrow. I shall miss beautiful Vietnam but not the constant scamming and hassle... read more

So we headed to Hue but only stayed there for two nights. We booked a tour along the river to visit some tombs as this was the tour recommended to tourist. We set off the following morning to the boat where we bumped in to a few friends that we have been bumping in to all over Vietnam. So we had good company for the trip at least. The boat trip was enjoyable, floating along the river watching the world go by. However the tombs weren't that great and our 'guide' insisted on purchasing our tickets himself so I think there may have been a bit of scamming involved. After the trip we went for dinner with our friends and relaxed. The next day we headed to the Citedal and tried to find the market, we ... read more

We arrived early this morning after getting the overnight train from Ha Noi. We were followed by agroup of different people sending us in random (and wrong directions). I actually managed to get lots of sleep on the bus despite the lightning appearing to hit very near us when we were travelling. Sapa is so beautiful.High up and much cooler. I think leanne and I may head to one of the local villages as we have met a few Hill tribe women who have invited us and not for a stupidly high price.More to follow... read more

Tuesday May29 2012..Kunming (China) to Sapa (Vietnam) Spent the day aboard a bus with travelled south alog some very hairy roads. We had the front seats at the top which meant we saw every oncoming vehicle on the wrong side of the road and every time the nearside wheels almost went over the edge! A few toilet stops..no cubicles...just a trough with water running thru it. Spectacular gorge counrty with rainforest jungles as we neared the border. Huge long 38 km downhill slopes with emergency ramps. Eventually got to the town of Hekou which was past the border gate so we had to get a taxi. It was actually quite easy to cross the border which was either side of the Red River. Once in Vietnam the first obvious difference was a clean tiolet with disinfectant!!. ... read more

Volgens mij zien ... read more

After finishing the loop in Tha Kaek it was time to plan my onward journey to Vietnam. My visa for Vietnam started on 1 May and I returned from the loop on 2 May. I went straight to the bus terminal to check the busses going to Vietnam and discovered various options. There is a direct minibus to Hanoi which leaves every other day or so but it takes 17 hours. After having been on one for more than 9 hours previously, I decided that I couldn't do 17 hours one a minibus. There was also a bus going to Vinh which is in the north and not too far away from Hanoi (well not so far means probably about 10 hours). I decided to take the bus at 8pm. I went back to the bus ... read more

Thursday May 21,2012 Breakfast of bacon and egg croissant at local bakery. Then walked around town and down steep road towards Cat Cat village but didnt fancy the hike through slippery, muddy fields and paying the entrance fees. Mist rose as we had coffe overlookig the valley. Pumpkin soup for lunch. Natures View restaurant on Cat Cat Rd , great food, service and views. Sring rolls, Grilled chicken in honey sauce, sauted vgetables and tiger Beer. Misty and overcast. Friday June 1, 2012 Woke at 5am and mist cleared enough to see Mt Fanzipan but by 7am it was cloudy again. Walked to lake followed by persistant Red Dao girl. Walked around streets watching police confiscate any motorbikes which were parked on the road. Had sickly sweet Vietnamese coffe with condensed milk. Walked up the hill ... read more
