Spent 3 days trekking in Sapa, up in the far northern mountains, near the border of China, which was absolutely brilliant! I have to say that it is the most breathtaking stunning scenery I have seen in Vietnam, and maybe in the world. The northern mountains in Vietnam are home to all the 'minority people' of Vietnam. 87% of the population are Vietnamese, but the rest live as tribes in small villages and are distinguished by their language and dress - usually a colourful costume with varying colours of headress. They all live in small villages in the mountains and survive by cultivating the land for rice. We took the overnight train to the town of Lao Cai, on the border of China, and from there it was a bumpy 90 minute drive to Sapa - ... read more

What to pack for Sapa: sunscreen, jumper, hat, raincoat, shorts and t-shirt, thermals... yes, we have finally found a place where the weather changes more than Melbourne!! Seriously through, Sapa is one of the most amazing places Ive ever been. Despite not having many expectations before arriving in Sapa, the scenery and the H'mong people that live there are just stunning! Photos and stories dont really do it justice but I'll try my best! Firstly, the cooler weather and clean mountain air is a nice change from Hanoi. Sapa is a small town set into the side of a mountain, so it feels like you are in a little ski village. The views from our hotel were amazing. However hiking up 151 steps makes you pay each time! We started our weekend with about an hours ... read more

Hello! Where do I start? We have had an amazing weekend - Sapa was just what we all needed to take a break from the smog and hustle of Hanoi. Our train left Hanoi on Thursday night at about 10.30pm - 4 out of 5 of us in one sleeper and Claire next door. As you can see in the pictures - the '4 berth soft sleeper' was pretty small, yet still comfortable enough - add an ipod and our speakers to our overtired and tipsy bodies (Claire and Ali had gone all out with their new invention of the Lemon Apple Iced tea with Vodka!), and it was one hell of a ride! Even when the lights went out, I'd say we would have managed a max of 3 hours sleep each, just because of ... read more

Things to pack for a weekend in SaPa: sunscreen, rain coat, hat, thick jumper, waterproof shoes, thongs. At last we have found somewhere that changes its weather faster than Melbourne! Words like amazing, breathtaking, dramatic and relaxing do not even begin to describe where we went over the weekend. After an overnight 10hour train trip from Hanoi to Lao Cai (5mins from the Chinese border) we went on a hair-raising 2 hour bus ride up, up and up to the mountain village of Sa Pa. Its the central place of trade for the Vietnamese minority ethnic groups, that still live in very traditional ways in the tiered rice paddies. We stayed at Cat Cat Hotel (which had two hungry cats, ironically), and were treated to 3 days and 2 nights of clear blue skies (with clouds every ... read more

for tours with sisi please visit http://sisi-sapa-tourguide.com/ Ah Sapa..... the most wonderful place i have ever been to. Everywhere i go seems to get better and better but this place will take some beating!!! The landscape, the people, the pace of life.....its just a gem. We arrived in sapa on the night train from Ha Long bay. I slept most of the journey after a few beers in the bar carriage on the train which was jam packed and everyone singing to karaoke. Was fun for a while until every song started to sound the same. When you step off the mini bus from the train to sap you notice the temperature difference straight away as it is a hours drive straight uphill all the way so much much colder. You are literally amoung the clouds ... read more

We have just finished a run of busy, but very enjoyable days. On our last day in Hanoi we took a day trip to the perfume pagoda. This involved a 2hr minibus journey there, then an hour in a piece of metal they called a boat, rowed by a tiny lady for an hour. All we had to sit on was a small plank of wood. The first 20 mins was fine as we were taking in the views, but then we really did have numb bums! You could't even shift your weight as this caused the boat to rock! Once back on dry land we then had a 4km walk up to a grotto - this was quite hard going in the heat as it was basically just a series of steps. We couldn't complain ... read more

From Hanoi, we went to Sapa, a hill town in the north west of Vietnam. We spent there several days. It's a town that was built by the French around a dozen different minority groups. We made every day an activity/ trek for several hours and saw some of the most amazing views in Vietnam- landscape and people. We were walking between the clouds, up and down mountains. We were spending time with the minority people, which are amazing people and generally more fluent in English than the Vietnamese. They're really funny and we had good laughs bargaining for stuff, or just talking. It was just an amazing time. Donata made a friend there, they exchanged gifts and it was a really good ending for our time in Vietnam and a really relaxed place. The tempratures ... read more

Arrived safely back from my week up in the mountains of N.W. Vietnam. WOW, what an awesome experience that was. We headed south out of Hanoi...when I say we, it was me, my own personal driver and own personal guide. I was the only one on the tour and at first I was a little wary but if it's one thing I've learned about this country it's that you have to trust...your instincts as well as the locals. Bac and Hung were absolute sweeties and couldn't do enough to make the trip a good one. Our first night was spent in Mai Chau with a traditional White Thai family. Their housing was a stilt home...floor of bamboo, timber walls with thatched roof. Roof and walls don't meet and windows and doors consist of shutters. This also ... read more

My relief to be leaving Hanoi was soon overtaken by the immediate perplexities of actually going anywhere. While I wasn’t thrilled that my ride to the train station was on the back of a motorbike, I was happy to see I was meeting up with a group. This thrill too, was quickly washed away as we were each directed to different sections of the train. I was supposed to have a sleeper but was directed instead to sit in a seat and wait and allegedly someone would come get me and show me to my sleeper after the train had distanced itself from the station. I did as I was told, but my skepticism increased after I met a fellow tourist who’d been told the same thing and had an even bleaker outlook than I did. ... read more
