Da lat is a small city in the mountains, it's 1475 m high and it's pretty cold there in the evenings...so cold that I coudn't resist buying a hat : ), it feels like home for me. And as to expect Ariel and me got sick after a few days...flu and throatache.. During the time of the French Occupation in Vietnam many french people lived here and build amazing houses. There are lots of little cafes and restaurants..and it feels still a little bit like in France! It's actually where the locals come for their honey moons. We had an amazing time there, there is a lot to see in the city itself, like the "Crazy house", it's a house that has a very special and artistic structure; a lake; palaces; old style french houses; many ... read more

Hi How what a day!!!!!! We hiked the gorgous mountains and viewed the beautiful waterfalls. BUT in a very different way- by absailing right down the center of them!!! Both feet first and head first!!! It was a fantastic way to see the countryside, trekking through the jungles and jumping of the cliffs!!! A super day- not even a leech could wipe the smile from my face!!!... read more

After 2 glorious days coasting the waters of Halong Bay, we were now off to do some serious land cruising - seated on the back of a motorcycle, whizzing through the country side. Our starting point was to be Dalat, home of the Easy Riders. The Easy Riders are a Dalat home-grown concept. Essentially, english speaking guides with motorbikes, who will, for a fee, strap onto the back of their bike and drive you across Vietnam, up mountains, down valleys, into tiny villages, and of course to the compulsory 'uncle or cousin's' house. It was touted as one of those 'must does' if you really want to experience Vietnam. Of course, we first had to find an Easy Rider. Which was no easy feat. We arrived in Dalat mid afternoon, checked into our hotel, and commenced ... read more

Why I keep taking buses is beyond me. Frankly, they irritate me, but in most countries they’re the only way to get around. My next one took 7 hours: from Saigon to Dalat, in the highlands of Vietnam. Dalat is 1500m above sea level, and is home to roughly 130,000 people. It’s a quiet area with beautiful mountains, jungle and hardly any foreigners. Its cool temperature made it a welcome retreat from the humidity of the city and with its numerous lakes, waterfalls, and forests, I was looking forward to some serious exploring. I was in Vung Tau during the huge typhoon that hit this area, and by the time I arrived in Dalat, the rain was still evident in the flooded roundabouts, but that was the only remaining evidence of the storm that caused thousands ... read more

Well, we have half a day left on our motorbike hire, so we should probably use it we thinks. Making a considerable effort to leave our hotel before 10am, we head out to explore the remaining sites of this fine Alpine village before we move on to the coast. First stop was the "Flower Gardens", a much more man-made version of the Botanical Gardens with lots of tiling and constrained Bonsai trees framing a perfect fountain display. It was kind of relaxing in a weird constructed kind of way and there were of course the Vietnamese Cowboys that would pose with you and their horse, or even let you jump on up into the saddle or the waggon for the photo op. Again, another kitshy thing that you can't help but get excited about. We did ... read more

As the title may suggest, Da Lat seems to be the world capital of "Kitsch". Far out. Sooo exciting; the number of giant things that have been built (look out Australia, there's a contender) and cafes and restaurants that have been shipped straight in from Disneyland and made out of kooky objects or massive pieces of plastic. We started the day at the "100 Roofs" cafe near the central markets. You walk inside to discover a labirynth of nooks and crannies, whacky artwork, and a thousand different characters tucked away on sublevels and hiding amongst the decor. Wonderful place to escape the world and enter one of total fantasy created either by a madman or a genius depending on your take of it all. Had a lovely Strawberry tea and Lemon tea accompanied with sesame cookies ... read more

Arriving in Da Lat late on the 29th of September, the first thing we noticed about this alpine town, is it's actually kind of cold!! Having no warm gear to speak of any more after shedding weight from our packs in Chiang Mai and Vientinne we booked right into the hotel that the bus dropped us at. Hot showers, a balcony, cable tv, free breakfast daily, right in the centre of town.. $8? Sure sounds great. Just try and ignore, or keep putting them off at reception about doing one of their ridiculoulsy overpriced tours. So we tramped on up to the third floor and admired the view across the opposite valley - nicely provided by a gap in the tall buildings across the street. The view consists largely of houses perched on all different levels ... read more

(Anna there is a caterpillar picture at the bottom of the page). Having left Hoi An far too many hours before hand, we arrived safe and sound away from the typhoon a little later than anticipated at about 1.30pm. Claire and Emma let Bruce and I get on with the gritty business of selecting a hotel, so we based ourselves in a modern mini hotel, that had wonderfully comfortable beds and plenty of hot water. All for a mere seven dollars per room including breakfast. Having settled in, we wasted no time and arranged a tour with a group of "Dalat easy riders" the following day. We popped on the internet to send our little "we are safe" message to everyone and we tried but failed to get a message through to Paul and Pauline to ... read more

We arrived in Dalat after a 7 hour journey. We we worrried before the trip that our bus wouldn't be satisfactory and were pleasantly surprised by our deluxe bus, in fact we nearly froze due to the air-con. I asked the driver at the stop-over could he open the doors to get out our jumpers. Several travellers took note and soon there was a frantic search for warm jumpers by travellers at the side of the road in 30 degree heat. Very bizarre! We were greeted onboard by an Aussie who resembled Billy Connolly with entertaining travel stories but we were quick to ditch him when we arrived in Dalat, Amy thought that he was the sort of bloke who would slit your throat while sleeping. Maybe a bit extreme. A little bit of info. for ... read more

Not so impressed with this town, its apperently honeymoon haven for the Vietnamese, but a bit tacky and not much to see. However we took a tour outside of the city which was wonderful. Managed to fit in rose gardens, coffee plantation, waterfalls, silk worm factory, lunch at a local house, a mushroom farm and corn house and some other sites in one day, and our motorbike drivers had fantastic english and were good company.... read more
