We had to be up at 6am to get the bus, which was grand. Although Dalat looked very close on the map it took nearly 10 hours to get there! We were dropped at the Pacific Hotel, the rooms looked ok and were cheap so we decided to stay there. After dumping our stuff we headed out for a bite to eat, and were approached by two easyrider motor bike tour guides who convinced us to book a tour with them the next day. The next day we met our guides at the hotel at 9am to start our tour. Our first stop was the Dragon Temple. After that we headed out of the city and stopped to admire the neatly arranged small farms. Dalat has a unique climate due to its high altitude, which makes ... read more

We arrived in the mountain city of Dalat after spending a cramped day on a bus (well, I was cramped, Sharon could fit into a Mini behind the Hulk and still have space). We were now heading back up into the clouds and the curving uphill roads proved difficult on both the bus and our nerves. It was with great relief that we got off the bus, amazed to still be alive. We immediately went in search of the famous Easy Riders, our only reason for making the journey. We were told they hang out at the Peace Cafe, and this proved both true and easy to locate. Sitting down to a banana pancake with chocolate sauce we met Khoa (Dave) & Lucky who spent the better part of an hour poring over maps and putting ... read more

After the coach turned up late, we got on to find we had the last two seats, right at the front on opposite sides of the aisle, with no leg room! Great! After four hours and lots of persuading, the driver finally pulled over by a cafe for all of us to get off and get some lunch and more importantly, use the loo!! After a 45min break we got back on for a mostly steep climb up the mountains. We had some amazing views, and a nice cool breeze. After another 4 hours we finally arrived in Da Lat at about 5pm. It was nothing like H and I had expected. Allot bigger and more built up. The coach dropped us off outside a hotel run by the same tour company as that which runs ... read more

We arrived in Da Lat on Thursday evening and once we had found somewhere to stay we went out to eat. We went to a French place that we had read about and tried there home made strawberry wine, which was so sweet even my nana wouldn't like it! On Thursday we walked around the town, we bought some breakfast from a local bakery and then headed to the lake in the centre of town to eat it. We then headed to the flower gardens and on the way we saw a naked man at the side of the lake doing what can only be described as having a number two (although he didn't even have an trousers around his ankles)! The flower garden was a little disappointing, the only good thing about it was the ... read more

As usual the bus left HCMC an hour late & arrived in Dalat 2 hours later than we expected, I didn't mind though as it was still light when we arrived & managed to find a hotel to stay in with a double bed each, cable TV & a private bathroom, all for on 1 pound 25p each per night. It was a lot colder than I expected but we put on some warmer clothes & had a walk around, eating dinner in a French Restaurant with some home-made strawberry wine, (not the best I have ever tasted!) We just spent the evening watching TV then caught up on the sleep we had missed in HCMC because of the noise. We had a lie in on Friday & grabbed some pastries from a local bakery & ... read more

Up early again for me, Darren and Scott for our mamouth bike ride to Nha Trang, well half way but its still 40 miles on the bike. After a bit of confusion at the hotel regarding the bill we eventually got picked up by the bike company at the hotel and taken to the shop to get kitted out with Bikes, Helmet and Gloves. In our group were the three of us, 4 middle aged woman and a guy from the Checz republic who looked like an assassin, he didn't talk just glared. Off we set from the shop through Da Lat center avoiding motorbikes, scooters, lorries etc. the guide didn't seem to mind flying off at the front but surprisingly we all made it to the first stop as any number of us could have ... read more

We arrived in Da lat after a shorter bus ride than usual, well it seemed shorter. The travel distance was 6 hours, and of course with some aimless stops. Our last stop was for lunch even though we were very close to Da lat at this point, but then the bus driver wouldn't have got his free lunch at the restaurant if we carried on to Da Lat. This restaurant was quite strange, it had crocodile in a cage and a fake waterfall. The lunch again as horrible. When we arrived at Da Lat we set off to find some decant food. I was very frustrated at this point with the food situation. And by the looks of the restaurant that we chose I opted to order just a banana shake. I made the right decision, ... read more

We've booked an open bus ticket to go via several stops further north in Vietnam. Our first stop was DaLat, a hill station in 1500m altitude that was refreshingly cool but by no means cold. (Apparantly it hasn't changed much in the past 50 years as the Americans and Vietnamese had agreed not to bomb it during the war... why couldn't they generally agree this for the whole country???) On the bus we saw country side how I had imagined Vietnam to look like: Paddy fields and Palmtrees, with Mountains in the background. DaLat didn't seem as idylic as we had emagined but we think that was partly due to quite a numbar of concrete buildings and an overcast sky and we havn't seen many clouds in the past 2 months (sorry..) There was a little ... read more

Happy New Year greetings from Pnomh Penh, where we're hanging out and enjoying copious amounts of chicken amok and banana lassi, washed down with the ubiquitous beerlao! It's been a while since my last update which covered Tiger Leaping Gorge and trekking in northern Laos, but it's been a very busy few weeks since then. Not least as I've met up with Danielle who I met in St Petersburg. Regular readers will know that a group of us travelled from there and through Russia and Mongolia together on the Trans-Siberian railway. Danielle had to fly home from Beijing but she's since flown out to meet me in Ho Chi Minh City - and the plan is to travel through to Australia together over the next few months! So after picking Danielle up in Ho Chi Minh ... read more
