Thailand
For this blog entry i'm going to give a brief history on how I found my passion for travel and my tavel experiences in Thailand.
A little about my self and my travel history, Including some of my experiences in Thailand…..
After highschool I had no clue what I wanted to do, I was being pressured into going straight into college and taking commerce just like 90%!o(MISSING)f the people I knew from high school. Instead I worked for a while and saved up a ton of money and decided to go travelling. In November 2011 was when I took off on my first trip. This was my first long trip by myself for longer than a couple of weeks. For my first stop, I flew to Cook Islands, then New Zealand, Australia, and then over to Asia. My first stop in Asia was Thailand. Then I went up into Laos, and flew down to Indonesia for a few weeks.
I travelled for around 7 months, had the greatest time of my life and would say I came back a different person. I found my passion
for travel and that’s why I’m now in the tourism program, because I feel like I can use my diploma/degree anywhere in the world.
Facts about Thailand
It has 1,430 islands, among the most famous of which is Koh Phi Phi Lee
The movie "The beach" with Leonardo Dicaprio was filmed on a small island close to Koh phi phi, called Maya Bay. Maya bay is amazing
It is the world’s most visited city, according to the Global Destinations Cities Index, ahead of London. It will welcome 16 million international arrivals this year.
Thailand shares a border with four countries: Myanmar (formerly Burma) to the north and west, Laos to the north and east, Cambodia to the southeast, and Malaysia to the south.
Why Thailand was so great?
I had been to a lot of places/vacations and seen a lot of different things before I went to Thailand. It’s not like I had never been or done anything before, but flying into Phuket completely alone was a whole new experience. You can look at pictures and do research and listen to me talk about it, but you never really understand what it’s like until you go, and this goes for any destination. You just have to go and see it for yourself. I spent about 3 months in Thailand excluding the few weeks I was up in Laos. Thailand is and amazing place, everything is just so different.
Some things I loved about Thailand…
· The weather – Plus 40
· The beaches – amazing, white sand, crystal clear water
· Snorkeling – or if you like scuba diving, it’s one of the best places in the world, also the cheapest place to get certified (padi?)
· Thai people seemed to all be so friendly
· It was cool to get a ride in a Tuk Tuk, which is when (obviously) a thai guy rides a bike, (probably more in the past) but now they use modeds, and your in a little sort of cart with a bench or to in the back. Their super cheap, and fun to ride in. It’s a great way to get around for cheap, and your basically outside so you get great views as your going.
· Alcohol is super cheap, hotels are less than 20$ for a nice room.
· Elephant riding, some places are immoral and treat the animals pooryly, but there are elephant camps where they treat them properly. And there are acutally programs where you can volunteer to work at an elephant camp.
I went elephant riding in Chang mai, (northern Thailand) And I also went Ostrich riding….
· Full moon party every month (every full moon). In koh phangan,
· Ping pong show
· The food is awesome – I was forced an learned how to use chop sticks
When to go?
Thailand consists of three seasons, Cool season, Hot season, and Rainy season. Although it is mostly hot and sunny all year long.
Cool Season (November - February)
The weather in Thailand around the central, northern, and northeastern regions is mostly cool and dry between November and February, even though these are the most popular months to visit Thailand. Considering its location in the tropics however, the Thailand climate is quite warm most of the year and genuinely “cool” weather really only occurs in the northern mountains, while areas like Bangkok get only two or three weeks of “cool” weather in late December or early January.
The southern region of Thailand really has only two seasons – “rainy” and dry, not technically experiencing “cool” weather, per se, but featuring glorious sunshine without unbearable heat, beginning in late November and continuing onto April or May.
Hot Season (March - June)
The weather in Thailand classified as the hot season lasts from March to June when higher relative temperatures and occasional rain are the norm. Around the inland areas, including Bangkok and Ayutthaya, this often means punishing heat and high humidity. The temperatures in the hot season begin climbing in February and by April the unrelenting heat makes many residents eager for the upcoming rains, which begin sporadically falling around mid-April. This is traditionally the least popular season for travelers to visit, although the weather in Thailand is still quite nice along Thailand’s coasts.
Rainy Season (July - October)
The rainy season is from July to October. While it definitely rains during this season it’s more likely to consist of flash-flood afternoon downpours than a continual rain for days. The weather is typically sunny throughout the rainy season, but when the rain comes, it’s fast and it’s furious.
Fortunately for beach lovers, Thailand’s two coasts have slightly different rainy seasons, allowing visitors to find sunny beaches nearly year round. On the west coast, where Phuket, Krabi, and the Phi Phi Islands are, the southwest monsoon brings heavy storms from April to October, while on the Gulf of Thailand or east coast, where Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao lie, the most rain falls between September and December.
Basically Thailand is amazing all year long, but I would say the best time to go would be between March and June for the most consistent hot weather. Which is when I was there, I think it was between February and April.
Oh and make sure you make it to a full moon party!
