so with a very very bad hang over we dragged ourselves to the port and onto a boat destined for phi phi. i slept the whole way. at first i wasn't to impressed with phi phi. jane and jo had really raved about it before everything seemed at bit hectic and in a bit of a mess. we managed to get the cheapest accommodation we could. beach hut and coast 350 baht each per night.but we at least got our own shower and toilet.
it wasn't until i mentioned that everywhere seemed like a bit of a building site that jo said that it is because this is where the tsunami hit. and of course it all made sense then! there are still major building works going on all over the island but there is a solid infrastructure set aimed at the tourists.and the longer i was there the more i just thought it added to the character of the place.
spent the first day on the beach. i don't know whether it had anything to do with the tsunami or not but you could go out for miles and not get past your waist. which i hated because
the last thing you want when your boiling hot is to sit in shallow water that's as hot as bath. plus, it means extra bum viewing time. better explain myself! when i get to the beach i like to position myself as close as i can to the waters edge as to minimize the amount of time anybody could look at my flabby arse. and obviously a good gradient into deep water helps with this maneuver as there's no need to stand up you just jump right in. of course with a beach that goes out for miles the time that it takes to get from A (sun bathing position) to B (immersed in the sea) is alot longer. i hope you enjoyed my long winded explanation, but basically it wasn't my favourite beach.
me and beth wanted to go and see "the beach" so we booked ourselves on a day trip around the island to do snorkeling and see maya beach and monkey island. obviously after the last experience in a long boat i wasn't over the moon to find it was a long boat we would be in and to top it off it was full of
water.
we met a couple of guys on the boat who were each traveling on their own. josh who was a d.j and jason who had just landed himself as a tour guide. so it started off well and the first stop was maya beach "the beach". i was shocked at exactly how busy the beach was. absolutely cramped full of long boats and speed boats. it kind of ruined it a bit for us all but at the same time we couldn't really complain as we were one of them! but the beach was amazing. the sand was like silk and it looked like it had been kept clean and had not been to badly damaged bye the constant drone of tourists. so we did the usual routine of photos. which i would just like to add that i think i'm very brave doing all those bikini shots!! no cameras usually allowed near me when i'm in a bikini but i made the exception because of where we were.
back on the boat, had a few stops for snorkeling. which must be world class! so many different types of fish. the only down side was that there
were micro sized jelly fish in the water. to small to see but you get reasonable sting. not nice when it gets in your bikini top.
then stopped at monkey island for lunch. the snorkeling was fantastic here but the highlight were the monkeys. there were only a couple that i saw. they seemed pretty friendly. it was clear to see that it was one male and one female.look at the photo you'll see what i mean.although they were very used to humans they were still wild which was nice to see. everybody had their turn having their picture taken. i went up and i think i must have got a bit to close. as the next thing i know there's a horrible snarling noise, big k9 teeth glaring at me and then they both jumped at me. i shat myself and managed to get out of the way just in time. i just thought bloody typical it had to happen to me. one the men who must have been some kind of security guard gave them a can of coke to distract them from me and they had a gulp each and proceeded to belch out like a
proper lout! it was really funny.
we stopped off at a few other beauty spots including an island called bamboo island which was just like a picture off the front off a magazine. we then started off home. it was at this point we all realized why the boat had been full of water. we obviously were headed in the opposite direct to the wind and tide and we all got completely and utterly drenched. everything all our bags and valuables. luckily everything was okay. but i was glad to get back.
in our huts we didn't get any sheets. so i used my sleep sheet that i ahd brought with me. the others just slept with nothing. when we woke up in the morning we were over run with ants. they were absolutely everywhere! the others ahd been completely bitten to bits. not sure whether it was the ants or whether it was mosquitoes but beth had over 100 over her body. she had 30 just on one elbow. we couldn't do anything to get rid of them so the next 2 days we shared our hut with the ants. they never seemed to bother me too
much but they drove the other mad. but i guess it's just one of those things that you have to deal with when backpacking.
when me elise and lene first met we were joking about our washing. and how we know when our clothes are dirty when they smell. it sounds terrible and god i would have a fit if it was at home. but know i've been on the go fo.r a while now. that is the way that it is. its a running joke. im not disgusting honest!! just thought i'd give you a little insight into backpacking. ha ha
